Girl in the Bunker – Review

Girl in the Bunker – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Girl in the Bunker

Elizabeth Shoaf was a happy, loving older sister that took care of her brother after school.  So when she didn’t come home one day, her mother got a sick feeling.  At that moment, Mrs. Shoaf had no idea Elizabeth was in trouble.   Elizabeth decided to walk the quarter mile home instead of getting into a cramped car.  On the way home, Elizabeth was approached by a man impersonating a police officer.  He told Elizabeth she was being arrested for marijuana plants behind her house.  Then he put a device around her neck and told her it was a bomb in case she ran.  After they walked past her home and deeper in the woods, the man told her the truth.  His name was Vinson and he was kidnapping her.  He created an underground bunker with explosive devices and booby traps all around it.  If she tried to escape, he would kill her.  Elizabeth will be tortured, raped, and beaten over a period of 10 days with only her wits to help her.

Like I Am Elizabeth Smart and Girl in the Box, it’s easy to blame the victim.  But you should only villanize one person in this movie, Vinson.  He is the sick person that kidnapped Elizabeth because she was the easiest target.  She was alone and trusted authority.  You will quickly get angry at all the police missteps and Vinson’s accomplices.  As Elizabeth is trapped in the bunker, she never loses hope or strength.  She uses her brain to gain compassion and leave clues to outsmart her kidnapper.  This based on a true story movie did not have to happen, but this movie and Elizabeth’s ordeal can be a teaching tool for your children. Watch it with them and teach them how to stay safe.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

If that’s the attitude your gonna have maybe don’t bother coming home – Mrs. Shoaf

You need to calm down and accept the situation here – Vinson

Hailey Dean Mysteries: 2 + 2 = Murder – Review

Hailey Dean Mysteries: 2 + 2 = Murder – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Hailey Dean Mysteries: 2 + 2 = Murder

Naomi just got a big promotion and ran a successful fundraiser to save her school.  So everyone is shocked when she emails her boss stating she turning down the job and not coming back.  Everyone including Hailey.  However, when Hailey’s niece Parker tells her aunt that Naomi wanted to talk to her at the fundraiser because Hailey once worked for the DA, Hailey starts to investigate.  Hailey Dean considers Naomi to be missing until she finds Naomi’s jewelry with blood.  Now, the police believe this missing person case is a murder investigation.  Hailey is determined to uncover the truth no matter who it hurts or who is hurt.

In true Hailey form, she is a step ahead of everyone.  But once again, she puts herself in harm’s way and almost gives Fincher a heart attack.  With this crime, Fincher and Hailey solidify their unique and strong friendship over a taco truck.  All the while, Hailey is dealing with a friend of her late boyfriend.  This is the first movie in a 3-part movie series, so a lot is left open-ended.  Instead of getting a list of possible suspects with an unlikeable victim, you adore the victim and there are no real suspects.  It’s not until the end that you get the final and only criminal.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Fincher, if you were missing, wouldn’t you want me to come looking for you -Hailey

Marrying Mr. Darcy – Review

Marrying Mr. Darcy – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Marrying Mr. Darcy

Elizabeth is floored when her boyfriend Donovan Darcy ask for her hand in marriage. She is excited to plan a small, outdoor wedding with all their close family and friends. She even decides to forgive Donovan’s Aunt Violet and ask her to attend the wedding. Donovan loves this idea, but Elizabeth regrets it instantly. Violet takes over the venue, date, guest list, food, flower, and even her dress. Soon Elizabeth doesn’t recognize herself or her wedding. She holds her tongue and keeps going until Violet tells her she will need to quit her job to be Mrs. Darcy. Newly hired Elizabeth panics and wonders if she is marrying her loving fiance Donovan or his job as Mr. Darcy.

This is the first Hallmark movie that will make you angry. As Violet takes over with “more suitable suggestions”, you will get frustrated.  But not only at Aunt Violet, but at Elizabeth’s lack of strength.  She just refuses to stand up for herself.  And it affects her engagement to Donovan.  While is infuriating to watch, it is a compromise some women and men make to appease their families.  Now like all Hallmark movies, this comes to a promising end, but with this promise comes the ultimate compromise.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

And they say wedding planning is hard – Elizabeth

You really have to thank Elizabeth for me being here. “Family” is really important to her – Donovan

So, I’m not our best friend – Brandon

Nightclub Secrets – Review

Nightclub Secrets – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Nightclub Secrets

Zoe Harrington happily teaches creative writing to her students and loves reading the classics.  However, her secret passion is for crime novels.  But when her sister Rachel commits suicide, she accepts the police findings.  Even when her alcoholic mother says otherwise,  Zoe believes her sister was unhappy.  However, when Zoe starts reading her sister’s journal and Rachel’s friend dies, Zoe decides to investigate.  Zoe believes the best place to start is Rachel’s job at a nightclub.  There, Rachel was a bottle girl who sold expensive bottles of alcohol for a 20% cut.  At first, Zoe is ignored but when she uses her sister tips written in the journal, she gets the job.  Soon, she is the #1 bottle girl and #1 target.

Talk about a slow burn. This movie sizzles for an hour and a half about the mystery of Rachel suicide, then it really gets going with a big reveal. This reveal will expose multiple crime syndicates going on in the nightclub. Although the perpetrator is exposed early in the movie, the motives and accomplices are not. So stick with this movie for a surprising and strong ending.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Still obsessed with books I see – Rachel

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Home Again – Review

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Home Again – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Signed, Sealed, Delivered: Home Again

With a piece of abstract art, Shane tries to open Oliver’s mind to changes.  However, she opens up the wall.  Behind the wall is the Lost Mailbag of Harry Snap.  They start to go through the undelivered mail and find a vase with a letter.  The note was mailed by Peggy, Mary Lou, and Bunny 18 years ago.  The letter was addressed to an art dealer.  The three girls were selling the vase to save their family farm.  They were told the vase was valuable and should only be sold as a last-ditch effort for money.  The family called it their “Just In Case” Vase.  But when their father died, their mother became depressed and stopped working the farm.  As the bills piled up, the girls wanted to keep their farm.  So they decided to sale the vase without their mother knowledge.  Now that the vase is found, the Postables will do everything to find the owner.  But are the girls and their family the true owner?  You have to watch to find out.

This movie will draw you in.  As a viewer, you are shocked that they find the owner in the first 30 minutes but this is only the beginning of the story.  As the story continues, the love between both couples grows stronger.  And the subplot with Rita’s parents is the dose of comedy the story needs.  While this is a very compelling story with a Hallmark ending, it attempts to touch on a horrific topic.  But they never say it by name.  While the story is compelling and can lead you to tears, you keep waiting for them to mention the word.  So in the future, if you are going to focus your movie around an event, say the event and its perpetrators by name.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Well, I believe it is already there – Oliver

Harvest Love – Review

Harvest Love – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Harvest Love

Dr. Luna Gilson is the most respected surgeons in her Seattle Hospital. While she is climbing up the ladder, she has lo the connection between her patients and her son Andy. So, when she learned that Andy didn’t invite her to a school play because he knew she would be busy, she decides to take a vacation on her families farm. They grow some of the best pears in town and has owned the land for 3 generations. After a couple of unfortunate run-ins, she is properly introduced to Will, the farm’s manager. He is a scientist that specializes in farming. Luna is truly impressed. The more time Luna spends in the small town and on the farm, she starts to appreciate the lifestyle. She and Andy get comfortable. Now, Luna is considering staying. But her parents warn her to enjoy it now because they are going to sell the farm. Luna can’t imagine the family without its farm.  So she has to act fast to save it.

Harvest Love is a nice Hallmark movie. And while Luna and Will don’t hate each other, they do annoy each other. The farm scenes are beautiful and picturesque. But that is taken away when the noticeable green screen is used. Since you know how the story will end for Will and Luna, their love story brings little to no interest. But the subplot of selling the family farm and the Harvest Fest Pear Contest shines through. This a movie you DVR and watch when you need to kill 2 hours.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Well why don’t you show me how it’s done so I will know for next time – Luna

Locked In – Review

Locked In – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Locked In

Chris, Ann Marie, and their daughter Taylor sit for a family dinner. While discussing right and wrong, they hear a noise in their barn. During Chris’s investigation, he finds a man digging in his barn. They fight and the man gets Chris’s gun; then shoots Chris. Chris dies in his wife’s arms. Two years later Ann Marie has agoraphobia and Taylor is working the land. She also wants Taylor to stay home during college. Taylor wants her mom to get better so she can leave the home that has become a prison. Later, Taylor finds a note that states, “If anything happens to me, you’ll know where to find it. Just keep my family out of it!!”. On the back of the note, there is a map that leads straight to their barn. In the barn, Taylor finds a lot of money and a gun. She immediately calls her boyfriend Blake. He wants to give the money to the police, but Taylor sees the money as a way to fix her life.  Taylor’s mind is made up until a stranger comes knocking.

This movie uses a slow build to spark interest and build up mystique, but it just takes too long.  You will lose interest in this movie and become overly critical of the mother’s action.  But make sure you pay attention the dinner conversation in the first 5 minutes of the movie.  It’s there to give the watcher a perspective on what Ann Marie believes in when it comes to right and wrong.   While the acting is done to the perfection, it can’t win against a boring and lackluster script.  This movie just felt like it took too long and the watcher will quickly lose interest.   This movie can be skipped.

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! – Review

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! – Showtime – 1 hour and 5 minutes

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! - Review

Tiffany Haddish takes the stage in her hometown of LA.  Shot before Girls Trip and after Keanu, Tiffany talks about her tough and painful beginnings.  However, it’s those beginnings that made her who she is today.  Growing up in group homes and foster care, she lived with different types of people and it made her a well-rounded person.  She had a moment when she lived in a car, dealt with a horrible relationship, and buried a family member on her road to Hollywood but she did it with positivity and a sense of humor.   In an hour, you will learn why she is a black unicorn who refuses to be rent-to-own with the key to the matrix and a Groupon in her MLK bag.

Tiffany Haddish delivers an hour of pure comedy.  She delivers great story telling that feels like a personal conversation.  She leaves politics alone and only focuses on making the crowd laugh by using her story of triumph and success.  She is an example of making lemonade out of lemons.  She speaks on the impact Kevin Hart and Jada Pinkett-Smith in her life.  She dreams bigger now because she has always had to.  She is a shining light of not just overcoming circumstances but using them to be better and the first black unicorn.  Sit back and get ready to laugh purely from the joy from which she cursed you.  This comedy special should have been longer, the hour went by way too fast.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Sorry, I just really wanted to be ratchet for 10 seconds – Tiffany Haddish

Summer at the Vineyard – Review

Summer at the Vineyard – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Summer at the Vineyard

Frankie and Nate have bills due and want to ensure the success of their vineyard, along with their relationship.  They hope that the Summer Art Walk is the best place to show off their first vintage wine.  Nate plans to cook a few hors d’oeuvre with Frankie’s wine.  It feels like a great plan but Frankie doesn’t feel like her wine is ready.  She slowly crumbles while hiding this secret from Nate.  She hopes she can speed up the aging process before Nate knows or they could lose the vineyard.  On the other hand, Nate heard that the Summer Art Walk was going to be canceled because the host’s road is closed due to an accident.  But he decides to host it at their vineyard, without telling Frankie.  Also, Nate created a new fertilizer and sprayed it all over the vineyard, now the plants are dying.  With days before the Summer Art Walk, Frankie and Nate are keeping secrets from each other.  But with the vintage not ready and the grape vines dying, will the communicate or have to sell the vineyard?

Based on Summer in Napa by Marina Adair, this isn’t a Hallmark love story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s a lesson in communication.  This couple keeps acting as individuals, even dividing the jobs at the vineyard.  This division is causing a huge mess of the crops and ultimately, the wine.  This lack of communication then trickles into their relationship.  It’s frustrating to know that they need to talk to each other to fix their problem, but they are just too bull headed to do it.  However, that is a huge reality for relationships these days.  There is not enough communication.  So, watch this movie and analyze your communication in your relationship.  Not just your partner’s.
