Mission Impossible: Fallout – Review

Mission Impossible: Fallout – Budget of $178 million – 2 hours and 47 minutes

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Ethan has a choice, complete the mission or save his friend.  He chooses Luther and loses the plutonium.  Now, the Apostles are going to use the plutonium to make three nuclear weapons.  Ethan feels horrible for losing the plutonium but he knows he did it for the right reason.  Alan sees the good in Ethan and decides to give him another chance.  A broker called the White Widow wants to trade the plutonium with a man name John Lark.  They plan to get Lark, scan his face, and become him to intercept the trade.  But Erica has other plans.  She doesn’t see the need for IMF and wants one of her people to go.  Alan is furious at the news but Erica clearly states, if her guy Walker doesn’t go, then no one goes.  Now, Ethan and his team, while being watched by Walker, have to get the plutonium before it can be weaponized.  But, of course, it won’t be that easy. This is his mission and he chose to accept it.

This movie is pure adrenaline from beginning to end.  Just when you think you have an idea of what is going on, something is flipped.  This movie is a complete fit for the Mission Impossible series (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Each choreographed fight scene is done with such precision, you feel each punch and kick.  It’s astonishing to see the team stick together even as Erica is doubting Ethan’s loyalty.  As Ethan hangs off a cliff, as Luther explains Ethan’s team devotion, or as Ilsa go toe to toe with the face of evil, you will hang on every second not knowing which way is up or down.  This is the thrill ride only Mission Impossible can pull off.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – Review

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – Budget of $75 million – 1 hour and 54 minutes

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Sophie has finally finished her mother’s biggest project: to redo and update the hotel.  She decides to name it Hotel Bella Donna.  And she invites everyone to the grand re-opening.  While she is happy that her mom’s best friends, Rosie and Tanya, can come.  She is disappointed that only one of her three dads can come.  Also, her relationship is in a tough place.  Sky has been offered a job at a New York hotel and he wants Sophie to come.  Sophie believes her place is in Greece and she doesn’t want to leave it or the hotel.  Just when Sophie doesn’t think things can get harder, a storm rolls through that stops boats and planes from traveling and leaves a huge mess of her new hotel.  And what keeps her strong is memories of her mother and how she came to Greece.  This is the untold story that will unfold in front of your eyes.

While it’s pretty obvious the path for Sophie’s storyline, it’s Donna’s storyline that is the most interesting.  Seeing Donna’s first encounter with Harry in France the day before she went to Greece.   And how she met Bill because she missed the ferry to Greece.   And the chance meeting she had on a rainy road with Sam to help a horse.  Even though, each time Donna met them she said she wasn’t “that kind of girl”, she left in her inhibitions behind her and made some memories.  This movie has the songs, choreography, and laughs you know from the prequel (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). But it doesn’t spark a moment with you.  If you are a fan of first, see the second matinee.  Otherwise, wait for Redbox.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Be still my beating vagina – Tanya

He has a boat – Rosie

I disappointed her – Sam

That’s a strange name – Ruby

Eggsy a.k.a. Galahad walks out of the Kingsman Tailor shop to see Charlie, a former Kingsman trainee.  Before Eggsy can blink the two are in a full octane fight that becomes fatal.  However, Eggsy makes it out but leaves Charlie’s robotic are behind.  The arm is remotely operated by Poppy, who uses it to hack into the Kingsman and get all of their locations.  In a few keystrokes Poppy kill all but 2 Kingsmen.  The Doomsday Protocol is activated and leads the surviving members to a bottle of Statesman Whiskey.  That bottle is a one-way ticket to Kentucky, USA.

In the forest of Cambodia, sits the richest woman in the world, Poppy.  However, Poppy is angry because she doesn’t have freedom or fame.  Poppy believes that the world should know she is the most successful woman in the world.  So why don’t they know? Because she is the biggest drug dealer in the world.  Now, Poppy will change that.  She has laced all her drugs with a poison.   The poison has 4 stages:

  1. A Blue Rash – spread throughout the entire body
  2. Mania – dancing and laughing hysterically
  3. Paralysis – frozen in place
  4. Death – once the paralysis hits the throat, breathing will cease (this happens within 12 hours of stage 3)

Poppy has an antidote, but for a price.  First, she wants all drugs to be legal.  So, she can be admired and respected for being a great businesswoman.  Second, Poppy and all her minions will get full immunity. What is the point of success, if you don’t have freedom.  If the president complies, her drones will release the antidote all over the world.  Eggsy and the Statesman will need to work together to take Poppy down.

Based on the comic series, The Secret Service: Kingsman, this movie is funny, twisted, and action heavy (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Most movies use action to deflect from a lack of script, but this is not the case with Kingsman.  The script is strong, new and interesting characters are introduced, a deeper connection is made with old characters, and jokes are well placed.  It does help to see the first movie, Kingsman: The Secret Service, before seeing this movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You will see a lot of references to the first movie and extended jokes.  Now the only downfall was the increase of CGI enhancement to the fights.  Of course, some CGI would be necessary.  However, it felt like the CGI was more relied upon than the last film.  It takes away from the overall feel.  This movie is a steal at the full price and no need to stay after the credits.  After this movie, you will look at hamburgers, butterflies, lassos, and Cameo’s Word Up in a whole new light (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Enjoy and don’t be HKLP.

Several days after a police sting became a full-blown riot in the streets of Detroit, Melvin Dismukes is hired as a security guard for a grocery store.  He is asked to protect it from looters and bombers.  Larry (from the singing group the Dramatics) and his bodyguard Fred are trying to find some fun at their hotel.  Their show was canceled because the riot was approaching the theater.  Karen and Julie are visiting from Ohio and decide to stay at a local hotel and hang out.  Larry and Fred see Karen and Julie and spark a conversation.  The women invite the guys to Karen’s friend’s hotel to eat.  Karen’s friend Carl is sick of the police and makes his feelings known to them.  Then, he pulls out a pistol as an example.   He fires a shot, only to have his friends laugh at the fours shocked expression.  He is just holding a starter pistol.  All girls and guys go to separate rooms in the hotel for the night, but Carl fires the start pistol a few more times, which trigger the local police to look for the shooter.  When the police get to the hotel, they start shooting.  Everyone inside the hotel ducks for cover.  At the end of the movie, there will be 3 dead bodies, 2 sides to the story, and fateful ruling that will follow these men and women forever.

This one is a hard pill to swallow.  You will constantly wonder what more can happen and how will everyone get out of this.  First, the deaths could have been easily prevented several times by the State Police or the National Guard.  But both decided to leave it to the local police in order to avoid a civil rights matter.  Secondly, an officer, who was accused of committing a bad shooting early that day, should have been removed from the job.   Now, you are probably thinking, ‘What about the starter pistol’.  Well, you need to see the movie for that.  This is not for the faint of heart.  It covers a lot of tough topics that hit home today.  However, interviews from those who lived it running during the credits could have made it better.  While there are no “heroes” in the classic sense, there are anti-heroes.  Not villains, but anti-heroes.  The people who survive the night, by doing what’s necessary.

I give it a 4.5 out of 5

Laura is enjoying college life with her friends Lizzy, Liv, and Kobe. Laura’s boyfriend Tyler and Lizzy’s boyfriend Gustav may not be close but they still hang out with the group. Laura and Liv go to class and learn that their classmate Marina committed suicide and live streamed it online. Some students were able to download it but if they share it the school will suspend them. As the teacher talks about suicide prevention, Laura thinks back to 2 weeks ago. Laura was at lunch with her friends and saw a lonely girl staring at a computer screen. She just smiled. The girl later sends Laura a friend request. Laura looks at a few Marina’s post and accepts her request. Laura is Marina’s first friend on Facebook. Marina starts flooding Laura’s with calls, messages, and comments. Laura feels bad for her but wants space, so she lies about her party being for 2. When Marina sees the post of the party, she snaps and confronts Laura. She screams and pleads for her friendship. Later that night, Laura unfriends her. Marina commits suicide. Soon, Laura’s account is highjacked and post horrific are displayed.  Laura tries to delete the post and her account but it doesn’t work.  One by one Laura is losing her virtual and real friends.

This movie has a strong Lifetime movie start.  Being nice to the creepy person and they turn nuts.  But as the blood and gore start, they decided to look into Marina’s past.  This investigation will bring the storyline back to witches, mirrors, and wasps.  It falls into the horror genre cliche and loses its edge.  This one can be skipped until it’s on TV.

I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars

The 43 year old, Bridget Jones, finds herself single and alone on her birthday. So, she decides to focus on hedonism instead of love. While at a Glamping (Glamorous Camping) Music Festival, she hooks up with Jack and then leaves while he is out getting coffee. Then a few days later, she hooks up with Mr. Darcy at her goddaughter’s christening. Afraid of running into the same pattern, she leaves Mr. Darcy before sunrise. A few weeks later, Bridget can’t fit into her skinny jean; to which her friend replies “Could you be pregnant?” One Clear Blue test later, Bridget is given the shock of her life but with one important question. Who is the father: Jack (her one night stand) or Mr. Darcy (her long time love)? Bridget has to tell both men that she is pregnant and another man may be the father. Now the former was easy and both men were supportive. However, that latter will be harder than ever. This pregnancy is in true Bridget Jones’ fashion.

As the third installment of the Bridget Jones’s Series, this movie picks up with the necessary time gap (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Mr. Darcy is married and Bridget is now the top producer at Hard News. She has given up smoking and lost weight. She also describes herself as a SPILF (Spinster I’d Like to F***). Fans of this series will have a fun time with easy jokes and the crazy situation. Jack’s reaction may be a stretch for some, but it makes men look good. The fact that both men and Bridget understand the importance of being a father, is refreshing in today’s movies. Be prepared for a funeral, an amazing soundtrack, and a moment Bridget Jones’s Fans have been waiting for since the books (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). This movie is great at full price.

I give this 3.5 out of 5 stars

So much better than you being mentally unbalanced – Jack

You have a train in your hair – Mr. Darcy
