Fahrenheit 451 – HBO – 1 hour and 40 minutes

Fahrenheit 451

Master Trooper Guy Montag is a star fireman for District 9.  With the guidance of his Captain Beatty, he makes a public spectacle of eels and erases them for their crimes.  The crime of reading or having books, listening to or playing music, or looking at art.  In District 9, the only allowable material is the Bible, Moby Dick, and the ministries (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  All other books, music, or art will be burned at 451 degrees Fahrenheit.  The leaders believe that books are graffiti that will pollute the mind causing the person to become insane.  While Beatty strongly enforces this practice, he still keeps a paper and pencil hidden at home.  He writes his thoughts and burns them.  Montag is starting to have flashes of his childhood but when Clarisse (a convicted eel) tells him that past firemen put out fires, he doesn’t believe her.  During a bust with Clarisse information, Montag and Beatty find an old woman with hundreds of books.  Beatty tells Montag to read one.  Meanwhile, he tells Montag a 2nd civil war almost started because of too much information and not enough attention to detail.  Books were the enemy.  Montag quietly hides a book called Notes from Underground and arrest the old woman (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Later she refuses to move and sets herself on fire with her last word being OMNIS.  Montag is compelled to find out the truth about OMNIS and why a woman would kill herself over books.

Based on the novel Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, this movie serves as a warning to the future (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  With days of fake posting, headline-only reading, miscommunication, and book banning, it’s easy to see how this world is possible.  And once the books were gone, history could be re-written to hide the truth. This is the type of movie that makes you want to read the book to learn what details were removed or changed.  With strong visuals and a dynamic cast, this is a great starting point for this production company.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

You too pretty anyway – Captain Beatty

You dream about hiding from me, you better wake up and apologize – Montag

How come he always makes you wait outside like a little dog – Clarisse

After seeing the 9/11 attacks on TV, Capt. Nelson wants to rescind his retirement paperwork and go to Afghanistan with his men.  Lt. Bowers says no but when Cheif Warrant Officer Spencer learns the papers have not been filed, he rips them up and Nelson’s men will be the first strike against the Taliban.  Once they arrive in the war zone, Col.Mulholland gives the team of 12 men the code name Task Force Dagger.  Dagger must meet with General Abdul Rashid Dostum of the Northan Alliance and join forces.  They will use his intel and Dagger’s training & air strikes to release the Taliban’s stronghold on the area.  They have a few problems.  First, winter is near and the weather will hinder the air strikes.  Second, there is a turf war between the different factions of the Northern Alliance.  And last, the terrain is better accessible by horseback.  With little horse riding experience and only 6 horses, the Dagger splits off into 2 teams.  Alpha Team will meet up with Dostum while Bravo Team will stay at the base and relay messages to HQ until they get more horses.  This is a bloody and complicated battle that will have a lasting impact on both sides.

Based on Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton, this movie gives you a small window into the first battle against the Taliban (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s frustrating to see Task Force Dagger face language barriers and infighting within the Northern Alliance.  When Nelson learns that Dostum is in contact with the Taliban, he is in total shock.  They consistently have pissing matches over the walkie-talkies.  While this is the first blow of a major war, it left its mark on American and Taliban history.  This movie does not hold back on any battle scene.  You will see blood, guts, dismemberment, and the after-effects of a suicide bomber.  So if you suffer from PTSD or shell shock, this movie can be skipped.  On the other side, it does show that the Taliban’s beliefs are not widely held among the Afghan people but it is deadly forced upon them.  This is just one more war on their soil.  And that’s the truly sad part about this movie.  Also, there is no need to see it in IMAX.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I told him I wanted back in and he said no – Nelson

You are cutting the head off your most venomous snake – Spencer

No, he is showing us off. He is saying here’s the Americans. They are with me – Diller

Bea believes that humans were latecomers to the forest and should allow the animals to roam freely in their gardens.  Her neighbor Mr. McGregor firmly disagrees.  So when Peter’s dad saw the fence going up, he went into Mr. McGregor’s yard and was killed and turned into a pie.  That harsh lesson taught Peter to be careful and devise plans before entering McGregor’s garden.  However, one day while chasing Peter, Mr. McGregor has a heart attack and dies.  The animals in the woods go wild and take over Mr. McGregor’s yard and home.  In London, Tom McGregor got bad news.  His great uncle died.  But Tom is more concerned about a promotion than an uncle never knew.  However, when he is turned down for a promotion he deserved due to nepotism.  He goes ballistic and loses his job.  His former boss tells him to go to his Uncle’s home (he just inherited) and relax.  Tom comes to the McGregor Manor to find it overrun with animals.  He wants to be rid of all of them.  His new neighbor Bea attempts to sway him to allow the animals to roam free.  He agrees in front of her but goes after Peter and his friends.  Meanwhile, when Peter sees that Bea is falling for Tom, he decides to put an end to Tom and his deceitful ways.

Based on Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, this is an imaginative and funny take on a classic children’s story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It quickly gets your attention with classic “Disney”-style singing birds who are consistently interrupted.  Providing a great running gag while allowing the film to separate themselves from other live action movies.  There are plenty of jokes for children and adults alike.  However, please be advised that the movie shows Daddy Rabbit getting caught and then a warm pie coming out of the oven.  If your children can handle this 5-second scene, then bring them.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Why don’t you pick on someone your own size – Peter Rabbit

I am selling the home and use the proceeds to build a toy store across from Harrods so they can watch their imminent demise – Tom

Los Angeles is the banking capital of the world and has 9 bank robberies a day.  So after an armored truck is stolen, Big Nick and his fellow officers are ready to go.  They look through their list of usual suspects to narrow the potential perpetrators down.  However, when Nick learns the thieves knew how to strike and where to strike but the truck was empty, he concludes there is more to the robbery.  The only known robber with this much expertise is Merriman.  Merriman is ex-military, ex-football player gone bad and paroled 8 months ago.  After surveillance, they find the Den of Thieves backing Merriman.  Big Nick learns Merriman’s thieves were either in jail with him, in the military with him, or on his football team.  Nick knows the thieves are trained and ready at a moments notice.  But what Nick doesn’t know is the robbers are preparing for the biggest score ever.  The one bank that has never been robbed, The Federal Reserve.  The team wants to break in and steal the bills marked for shredding.  They know the serial number will be taken out of the system and no one will be looking for the money.  To get this information, Nick will go after the newest and weakest member of the team, Donnie, the driver.

Talk about a roller coaster ride.  This movie hits the gas and never let’s go.  You are given a thrilling cat and mouse game with an Ocean’s Eleven-style bank robbery with a Set It Off shootout (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Now pay close attention to everything you see and hear, it will become important.  And you have no idea how this will end.  While uncovering the mystery, it does go own the path of Nick’s marriage.  This was completely unnecessary.  With several scenes, you got to see that he is self-destructive.  So the fallout of his marriage was not needed.  See this movie before someone ruins the ending.  And you will want to watch it again.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

You pausing for dramatic effect? – Big Nick

I told you so – Merriman

Sitting on a porch in Virginia, Mildred “String Bean” Jeter tells her boyfriend, Richard “Rich” Loving, she is pregnant. Absolutely elated by the news, Richard decides to marry Mildred, buy an acre of land, and build a house for them. Knowing it was illegal for them to get married in Virginia, they went to Washington, DC and came back to Virginia. They hung their marriage license over their bed. One night, based on an anonymous tip, the Sheriff came to their home hoping to catch them having sex, they found them sleeping. They were both put in jail. Rich stayed overnight and given bail, but Mildred was kept for days until the judge could hear her case. Also, Rich was not allowed to bail her out. Rich obtained a lawyer who told them to plead guilty, so they could avoid prison. With the plea, they got a 1 year suspended sentence and could not return to VA together for 25 years. They moved to DC, but it as a far cry from the country life they knew. Once Mildred was ready to give birth, she decided she wanted Rich’s mom to be the midwife. So in the dark of night, they traveled back to VA. After they baby, Sidney, was born, the Sheriff showed up on their doorstep to arrest them. With legal interference they were able to avoid jail, but told to leave VA again. Richard can see that Mildred is deeply sadden by city life and misses her family. But when an accident strikes, moving back to VA is the only option. Their choice will affect the entire United States.

This wonderful story is told with the quiet of the country in contrast to the busyness of the city. The Lovings didn’t set out to be a trial blazing couple, they just wanted to raise their children in VA without going to prison. Even though they had to fight the state, their friends and family were on their side. The world was not out to stop them, most were for their marriage. The two actors easily displayed the soft spoken nature of Mildred and Richard. They just loved each other and lived up to their surname. Remember, you may lose the small battles but you can win the big war. This true romance story is a great date movie. See it today and bring a tissue.

Annually, in Bergentown, the Bergens get together to eat trolls. The Bergens believe that eating trolls is the only way they can ever be truly happy. Then on the day young Prince Gristle will get his first taste of troll, the trolls escape. King Peppy saves his daughter, Princess Poppy, and all the other trolls; and they live in peace for 20 years. Then Princess Poppy decides to throw an annual bash to celebrate their freedom, but Branch (party pooper troll) warns them that all the dancing and singing will lead to the Bergens finding them. During the party, Branch’s warning comes true. A handful of trolls are kidnapped by the Bergen Chef while other trolls hide. With a “burn returned” threat, Branch decides to help Princess Poppy get the kidnapped trolls before they can be eaten by the Bergens. They will make unbelievable allies and wild enemies on a true hair raising adventure.

This movie will be loved by parents and kids alike. This is a fun story with an even more impressive sound track (Trolls Soundtrack) (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It has all the twist and turn of a live action movie with a message only an animated film can deliver. You will dance in your seat, laugh out loud, and question yourself about your own happiness. And keep your eyes open for Cinderella and E.T. shoutouts in this movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). This is worth 3D but be prepared to feel like you are covered in glitter. Stay past the 1st end crawl for a satisfying ending, but no need to stay past the 2nd end crawl.  DreamWorks has put together another beautifully crafted movie

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Dennis Nash, a construction worker, supports his mother and son.  But in the Orlando housing crash, construction work was not coming in and Nash could not pay his bills.  He tries desperately to work with the bank and the court, but to no avail.  His house is taken back by the bank with the help of Richard Carver and the sheriff’s department.   Richard gives the family 2 minutes to pack up everything they can before everything is put on the street.  While moving their belongings into a hotel, Nash realizes some items missing.  While confronting the eviction crew about his stolen property, Carver offers Nash a job doing construction, evictions, and “repairs”.   Nash’s only wants to earn enough money to get his family home back.  But how much of your soul are you willing to sale, just to get a piece of it back?

Just the opening scene shows you how desperate people are in those … well … these times.  The emotion of each tenant will pull at your heart strings.  All people, all races, all ages, and from all walks of life were met with a horrible knock at their door.  Also, you will be delve into the world of underhanded dealings, cash for keys scams, and a government that looked away for far too long.  You will become pissed off at Carver, but understand why Nash ‘does what he needs to do’ to get his home.  It will make you wonder, how far would you go.  Its easy to fall down a rabbit hole, if its paved with gold.  This movie could easily be based on a true story.  However, this film does not get at the root of the problem, just the aftermath.  The movie should have done a quick explanation of the bad mortgages and bulk loans done by the banks during the housing crash.

I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars
