After her estranged father is killed in a hit and run, Shaun goes to his vacation home in Wisconson to settle his estate by selling his home.  She has not spoken to him in years but she knows he is not perfect.  Her two children, Jasmine and Glover travel with her but her husband will be joining the next day.  As the three walk around, they see a few things out of place.  A broken picture, cut wires, malfunctioning alarm system but ignore it because no one has been in the home for months.  Also, they notice the vacation home is now a fortress with a sophisticated alarm system, retractable window shades, and cameras everywhere.  While Glover is playing with a drone he is grabbed.  When Jasmine goes to find him, she is grabbed.  While Shaun attempts to order pizza in the driveway, she is attacked but fights back.  After the fight, she sees her children locked inside the fortress at the mercy of strangers.  She must find out what they want to save her children.

This movie shocks from beginning to end.  You will see Shaun risk life and limb, like most mothers, to save her children.  However, she doesn’t make typical movie mistakes.  Like wearing heels in the forest or calling for her kids in the dark.  She is smart and uses her knowledge of the house to her advantage.  The irony is the house meant to keep them safe is the same house that becomes a prison.  So how far would you go for your children?

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I am your mother. Is there a difference? – Shaun

So what does that make you, slightly paranoid – Glover

I’m your big sister. It’s my job to worry about you. Not your job to worry about me – Jasmine

Fear, I can manage. Desperation is a whole other thing – Eddie

Life of the Party

Deanna has dropped her daughter Maddie off at the sorority house for Maddie’s senior year.  The school would have been Deanna’s alma mater but she left her last year. When she got pregnant, she and her husband Dan decided only one of them could afford to go, him.  While she regrets not finishing, she is proud to see her daughter go the distance.  As Deanna and Dan pull off, Dan says he wants a divorce, marrying a real estate agent, and selling the house.  In tears, Deanna goes to her parents’ house and looks through old photos.  She sees a photo of her in the archaeology club and gets an idea.  Deanna goes to Maddie’s sorority house to tell her about he divorce and enrolling in school.  At first a little nervous, Maddie sees this is a good thing for her mom and cheers her on.  Now Deanna has to navigate through the complicated world of college and divorce while maintaining a relationship with her daughter and getting her degree.

This is a love letter to mom’s who wondered if they could finish.  You will get the answer to your question.  However, it’s not without some well-earned bumps in the road.  While Deanna is trying to move forward, she is being dragged down by her ex and Mean Girls.  However, what makes this movie different is the relationship between Deanna and Maddie.  In most movies, Maddie would not accept her mom until the end.  But in this movie, Maddie takes a deep breath and accept her mother going to her school within 2 minutes.  This mature look at college women is a great contrast to the girls in Deanna’s class.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

You are like my sexual Dumbledore – Jack

Wow, that’s a lot of text – Deanna

Mom, what are you doing – Maddie

Widowed, mother of three Kate is working two jobs while in nursing school.  She tries to balance motherhood between studying, delivering pizzas, and cleaning carpets.  One day she is called to clean a yacht’s carpeting after a hard night of partying.  When she starts to clean, she bumps into Leonardo.  Leonardo is a playboy and heir to a construction fortune.  When Kate refuses to get him some fruit, he fires her; then throws her and her equipment off the yacht.  Kate is fired from her carpet cleaning job and her mom can no longer watch her kids.  Kate feels her dream of nursing going down the drain.  Then she reads a news article saying that Leonardo washed ashore and has amnesia.  Kate’s best friend Theresa comes up with a plan to trick Leonardo into thinking Kate is his wife so he can do all the heavy lifting while she studies.  Theresa sees it as payback for getting her fired.  With apprehension, Kate decides to do it.  Now Leonardo believes he is a married, sterile, recovering alcoholic, poor, construction worker.   However, his sister Magdalena wants Leonardo to stay gone.  She hopes to convince his father that Leonardo has died so she can inherit the company.  It’s only a matter of time before Leonardo learns the truth about Kate, Magdalena, and himself.

With a nod to the remake, this version has a role reversal (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Even with the reversal, it’s still as funny and heartwarming as its predecessor.  Leonardo and Kate come off as convincing adversaries and a couple.  This movie had genuine laughs about everyday life.  And it was great to see that even with Leonardo loss of memory, he did not lose his taste in food, style, and music.  Now be warned, there are some subtitles.  But hearing the jokes in Spanish actually makes the comedic timing better.  So sit back and enjoy for an easy going, not vulgar laugh.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

I am not being selfless.  I am thinking of myself less – Leonardo

A Christmas Story Live! – FOX – 3 hours and 0 minutes

A Christmas Story Live

Ralphie looks back on his most memorable Christmas.  As he schemed, begged, and haggled to get the best gift ever: A Red Rider BB Gun.  Whenever he asks for the gift, he is met with the same excuse, ‘You’ll shoot your eye out’.  His mother, neighbor, and even Santa don’t seem to budge on their stance.  But the gift is not the only thing that makes this Christmas memorable.  Ralphie stood up for himself, was introduced to Chinese turkey, and developed a stronger relationship with his mother.  A Christmas Story proves the holiday is more about gifts, it’s about a feeling and family.

THIS IS A MUSICAL.  THIS IS A MUSICAL.  If you are looking for the theater version of A Christmas Story movie, then watch the movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  If you don’t like the musicals, then watch the movie.  This is the Broadway musical coming to live TV.  Of course, since it was live TV, some camera angles were off, some lighting was too dim, and one shot was blurry.  However, the music and dance numbers were flawless and highly entertaining.  Now one iconic scene you know was not present (i.e. Ovaltine).  And a scene with Swartz’s mom, the boys with the leg lamp, and a Christmas Eve Night number were added to give the viewer something different.  While this was a little long, it still keeps the core principals of the original movie.  And to see costume changes happen before your eyes are spectacular.  Congrats to all the kids who did a marvelous job on their routines.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Good luck dear. I believe in you, even if you’re not a winner – Mrs. Parker

Tinker toys? Nobody asks for tinker toys, you just get them – Older Ralphie

Ten days before the Berlin Wall falls, Lorraine is given her mission. The night before an agent named James was killed and a watch containing a list was taken from him.  She must find the list (on microfilm) which contains the name of all the current spies in the field. It must be recovered soon because one spy is listed as a double agent. They need the list to save every operative in the field and to stop the double agent. Her point of contact in Berlin is David.  But Lorraine is worried because the moment she lands in Berlin, she is made by the KGB and must fight.  She is quickly discovered by David who gives her the 10 cent tour of Berlin.  David is quick to exchange anything for information.  Now Lorraine recalls the events of the past 10 days with her boss in an interrogation room.  By the end, her story will include a man with a photographic memory, a beautiful French operative, an ice pick, and a corkscrew.

Based on The Coldest City by Anthony Johnston, this thrill ride starts at the very beginning (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has the right dose of kick-butt action with dashes of humor when needed.  As Lorraine discusses not having the right outfit before a battle or comment on her contact’s balls, it makes for an easy laugh in tense situations.  Some of the fight scenes are a spectacle to see because everything is a weapon.  There is a not sweeping shot of the fight scenes, just up close and personal.  This is purposely done to make the audience feeling each punch, kick, stab, and gunshot.  Also, the hand to hand combat makes things seem more realistic.  This is a fun watch for any action fan.  Be warned that all of Lorraine’s fights are in the trailer but not at full scale.  Are the best parts of the fight scenes in the trailer? NO.  However, you will anticipate them as the scenes play out.  Anyone younger than 16 should stay home and no need to stay past the credits.  There could be a part two but we must see how this movie pans out with audiences.  See it with the understanding that you may need to see it twice.  It goes fast and there are a lot of twists and turns.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Your not the best, are you? – James

Would it make you more comfortable if I stood on the other side of that mirror? It’s a bit crowded back there. – CIA Agent

Surly and the other animals are enjoying the high life at the old Nut Shop.  Since it closed, they have taken over and stop scrounging for nuts in the forest.  Now it’s a 24-hour party.  Andy, however, thinks they are becoming lazy, fat, and entitled.  They are losing their animal instincts.  She tries to teach the younger children but it’s falling on deaf ears.  Surly doesn’t see why Andy worries so much until the Nut Shop explodes.  The animals don’t know what to do for food and they don’t want to scrounge for it.  Surly and Buddy try to find a new Nut Shop but fail.  Andy tells them they must learn their old ways in Liberty Park.  However, Andy doesn’t know that Mayor Muldoon is upset about Liberty Park.  It is the only place in this town that doesn’t earn him any money.  So, he wants to get rid of it and create an amusement park.  As his bulldozers rip apart the park, the animals try to stop them.  The Mayor calls Critter Catchers to trap them.  Surly is caught in a trap and is freed with Precious’s help.  But soon, Precious is taken by Heather Muldoon, the mayor’s daughter.  Buddy and Surly go to rescue Precious from Heather.  While Andy tries to find a new place to live and go back to nature.

The sequel to The Nut Job is just a fun movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Animals are becoming lazy because they don’t have to work anymore.  Everything is given to them.  So they lose their need to fight and survive.  Once the handouts are gone, they don’t know what to do.  They wait for Surly to give all the answers.  Getting back to basics is the best for these animals.  This is a great lesson for kids to learn.  They should get strong and not settle for an easy path but learn to fight and survive.  Once they learn, they must keep fighting and growing.  Also, kids learn that money isn’t everything and animal need a home too.  While golf and amusement parks are nice, parks and recreation are just as good.  Kids will enjoy this film and adults will get some laughs, too.  This is a wholesome movie for all with plenty of lessons thrown it.  And pay attention to the Mayor’s license plate.  It tells all you need to know about him.  See it in theaters but no need for 3D.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Near to the town of Lander, there is Wind River Reservation.  They have had an issue with mountain lions killing the local livestock, so they call in U.S. Fish and Wildlife officer Cory Lambert.  It’s his job to hunt big animals and keep the town and reservation safe.  While tracking the family of lions, he comes across the dead body of Natalie Hanson.  She was barefoot, beaten, and raped.  Cory can see that her footprints are in the snow and she has frostbite on her feet and face.  He calls the murder into the Tribal police, who call the FBI.  Cory meets with Jane, the FBI agent, who realizes that his knowledge of the area will help her in the investigation.  She asks him to help her hunt for a killer.  Her biggest obstacle is the medical examiner.  He doesn’t want to list Natalie’s death as a murder because she died because of the exposure to the cold, not her injuries.  Jane and Cory are furious.  They know she was running from her attackers and that caused her to freeze and die.  Now Jane has to investigate without any other agents on her side.  Just the Trible Police and Cory.  While Jane hunts for a killer’s motive find him, Cory hunts for a killer’s trail to find him.  But during the investigation, Jane learns this hunt is personal for Cory.  Natalie was his daughter’s best friend and his daughter Emily was a murder victim too.  Solving this crime will not bring his daughter back, but it will bring the closure to a family that he was never given.

Inspired by several events among Native women, this is a heart-wrenching tale of crime, grief, and loss.  This movie completely contradicts with the picturesque landscapes, open land, and magnificent snow.  You learn that while the land is beautiful, it masks a horrible legacy of rape, drug abuse, and murder.  As Cory tells Jane how the victim died, you will feel the theater get colder and your chest tighten.  You will wonder how long you could survive given the circumstances.  This movie is different because you just don’t hear the crime, you see it first hand.  Also, you will see the effect her death has on her family but comes to no shock to the reservation.  And just as you find peace with the ending, you learn a horrible statistic.  The number of missing Native Women is not a tracked statistic.  No one knows for sure how many are missing.  Hopefully, this film will spark a change.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

What’s the rule, son? Guns are always loaded, even when they ain’t – Cory

Why is it when you people say you want to help, it starts with an insult – Martin

Please don’t make me laugh – Jane

Michael Bryce was working for Triple-A Protection Services and giving his clients top notch treatment.  Until his client was murdered after boarding a plane.  Two years later Michael has not recovered from losing his client.  He is still a bodyguard but for low-end players.  Darius Kincaid has offered his testimony against a murderous tyrant for his wife Sonia’s freedom.  He doesn’t care that he will spend the rest of his life in jail because he only wants her to be free.  Interpol knows that anyone who was scheduled to testify against the tyrant Vladislav Dukhovich dies before they take the stand.  So, they decided to protect him every step of the way.   Amelia Ryder is in charge of the Interpol Protection detail.  Once they head to the courthouse, it all hits the fan,  After multiple bullets, Amelia and Darius are on the run to her safe house.  Darius warns her that Interpol must have a leak and she needs to call someone she can trust to help her that’s outside of Interpol.  She only knows one person that can handle Darius and that’s Michael Bryce.  Once Michael learns he must protect Darius (who attempted to kill him 29) he says no.  But Amelia promises Michael she will get him his status back in the protection business.  Michael has to keep Darius alive but he (and Duhkovich’s men) want to kill him every step of the way.  If Michael doesn’t get Darius to the court on time and alive a Dukhovich will be free.

What if Pulp Fiction’s Jules met Deadpool (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)? Well, you don’t have to wonder anymore.  This movie is your answer.  With quick-witted banter, 2 crazy “how we met” stories, plenty of fights, and a plethora of car chases, this is a fun shoot-em-up movie.  While the plotline is nothing new nor the characters, it’s still fun.  It’s the comedic timing of Reynolds & Jackson that make this movie worth watching.  Seeing Reynolds do his best Jackson impression is great.  When the action slows down, the dialog picks up and vice versa.  Now the storyline between Michael and Amelia is boring, the storyline between Darius and Sonia will compete with Harley Quinn and Joker.  They may just be the movie couple of the year.   See this one in the movies and see it until the very end of the “director’s cut”.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Jake has nightmares every night. They involve a man in black torturing children to destroy a tower. When Jake wakes up, he draws his dreams. His family, friends, and teachers all believe his grief from losing his father is causing his nightmares. Although, Jake swears the dreams are real. After one more altercation, Jake’s school suggest he goes to a clinic. His stepfather says yes and his mother reluctantly agrees.  That night he has a dream about a gunslinger named Roland and his father battling the man in black.  The father succumbs to the suggestions of the man in black and Roland is heartbroken.  Then, the Roland heads to a house.  The next day, Jake looks for more information about the house in his dreams but is interrupted when Julie and a helper comes to take Jake to the clinic.  But Jake knows something is off with his escorts.  They have the same twitches and scars Jake has seen in his dreams.  In a split second decision, Jake runs away to the home in his dream.  He goes through a secret portal and ends up in Mid-World, the home of the Roland and Walter, the man in black.  Soon, Roland and Jake cross paths.  That’s when Jake learns that his dreams are real.  Walter is using children to power a device to destroy the dark tower.  This tower protects all the worlds in the universe from evil.  If the tower falls, every world would have an apocalypse.  Roland believes that Jake’s dreams are really visions; they hold to key to where Walter is hiding.  Roland is ready to seek vengeance for his father’s death.  However, this vengeance could do more harm than good.   Roland and Jake must come together to end Walter, the man in black.

Based on The Dark Tower by Stephen King, this is a fun movie for the family (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  But be forewarned, all the previews are not all appropriate.  Once this story gets going, there is no lag.  It keeps a compelling storyline for the imagination to soar.  While Dolby is not necessary, the imagery and set designs deserve to be seen on the big screen.  Now some moments are obviously CGI, but most blend in seamlessly.  So for a sci-fi fantasy, this is the one to see.  And a part 2 will come.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

After working the morning shift at her waitress job, Karla finally can step away to take her son Frankie to the park. He carries a recording device that he likes to playback and loves to hide. She plays Marco Polo with him often to find him in a crowd of children. While listening to music, she gets a call from her divorce attorney. He tells Karla that her ex-husband wants primary custody. Just as she is about to give the lawyer a piece of her mind, her phone disconnects. She goes back to Frankie and can’t find him. She calls out Marco but gets nothing back. Then she starts to panic. And for a brief second, she sees a woman pulling him into the back seat of the car. She runs to the car and holds on for dear life until she is forced off, which causes her to drop her phone. She jumps into her car as starts to chase them into busy traffic. She notices Frankie’s recorder is still on and plays it back.  She hears the kidnapping taking place.  The kidnappers run into cars, threatens Frankie’s life with a knife, and run over a police officer to make her stop.    Then, they pull over. She offers all her money in exchange for her son. The woman kidnapper Margo goes up to the passenger side window. She tells Karla if she lets her in her car and drives her to get $10,000, Frankie will be released. Begrudgingly Karla lets her in. Once in a tunnel, all hell breaks loose in the car. With police chasing the wrong car, her son at risk, and a gas tank close to empty, Karla will not stop for anything or anyone until her son is safe.

Go, Karla! Go! This is one to see. This movie will make you cringe (in a good way), make you cheer, yell at the screen, and laugh inappropriately. It is not a Lifetime movie, it is an action-packed thriller of a mother’s determination and quick thinking. You don’t say “why would you do that”. Because she doesn’t. You don’t say “why don’t you do this”. Because she does. She doesn’t make stupid mistakes. She just keeps running into WTF moments. Also, this movie starts with baby and childhood home movies of the child so you fall in love with him and become invested in his safety. This is one to see.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

It’s Gene Meh’s first day on the phone.  He will have his own cube and be scanned for the first time if his user Alex selects his emoji.  Gene is so excited.  There is just one problem, he expresses his excitement.  His parents, Mel and Mary Meh, are concerned that their son is not ready.  If he makes the wrong face, it could ruin his career on the phone.  Gene assures his parents he can do it.  He promises he will only be a Meh in Textopolis.  He relaxes into his cube and waits to be used by Alex.  Then he gets selected.  Gene freaks out and makes the wrong face, which displays on the screen.  Smiler, the first emoji ever and the supervisor, calls a board meeting to discuss his future.  She determines that he is a malfunction and should be erased.  Gene runs and she sends anti-virus robots after him.  While escaping, Gene runs into Hi-5 who helps him hide in the Loser Lounge.  The Loser Lounge is for apps that never get used.  Hi-5 tells Gene that he knows a hacker named Jailbreak who can help reprogram him.  It will allow him to only have one emotion, Meh.  At first, she wants nothing to do with Hi-5 or Gene until she sees what Gene can do.   She thinks Gene’s ability to change emotions will allow her to go get through the facial recognition software on Alex’s firewall.  If she can get through the firewall, she can get to the cloud and be free of the phone.  She promises to fix Gene’s emotions if he gets her to the cloud.   But the more they do, the more Alex’s phone malfunction.  He decides to go to the store and have it erased, ending Textopolis and all the emojis forever.

Well, it’s cute.  With the use of well-known apps like YouTube, Dropbox, Twitter, Instagram, Candy Crush, Spotify, Just Dance, and Snapchat, this movie touches the vein of teens existence today (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  They even make the connection between Hyroglyphics using pictures as words and Emojis.    It uses computer terms like firewall, hacker, program, trojan horse, and spam to attract the computer crowd.  But all the jokes fall flat.  This movie is bordering on nostalgic more than funny.  It even jokes that emoticons are the elderly.  But this movie is just cute.  Cute enough to wait for TV.  This is not worth Netflix. The short Hotel Transylvania film “Puppy” was funnier than the movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

Orphaned and bushy eyebrows have made Red an outcast all his life. But since he couldn’t beat the flock, he alienated himself from the flock. Now, Red provides food and entertainment for children’s birthday parties. When a parent claimed he was late, Red lost it and cracked the parents’ egg. The parents took Red to court for causing them mental distress. Since, Red’s face is the first face their hatchling saw, it calls Red daddy. The Judge sentenced Red to anger management, the worst punishment for this happy flock. In anger management Red meets Matilda (the group’s leader), Bomb (exploded when he was frightened at his surprise party), Chuck (speeding, robbery, credit card fraud, and destruction of property), and Terrence (what ever he did, it was horrific). Then a ship rolls in carrying … what else … pigs. Red knows Leonard, King Pig, and his friends intentions are bad. However, all the other birds just want to be happy and welcome the pigs. Finally, with the “help” of the Mighty Eagle, Red sees the Pigs’ nefarious plot. Steal all the eggs and eat them! Now Red must teach the birds to be angry and fight to save their children.

Ok … well … this movie is cute. The plot is a mix of Despicable Me, Up, Indian Jones, and X-men: Days of Futures Past with the Angry Birds game. It didn’t break any ground in animation or story telling. It tried to tug on the heart strings but you won’t care enough to get emotional. It’s adult jokes fell flat. The score is the best part of this movie. They picked new and old music to capture the tastes of all movie goers. Also, the voice actors did a great job with a bad script. If you take your child to see this movie, expect them to leave with the same feeling as The Good Dinosaur. Ok but not great and a little bored. Also, your younger children probably won’t eat eggs for a while. Wait for Red Box. Angry Birds can be skipped.

I give this 2 out of 5 stars

I thought you said you stored your nuts for the winter – Leonard

Wisdom is not something that is given. It is attained – Mighty Eagle

Pluck my life – Red

It’s a shame when you create something and someone else destroys it – Chuck

Kate and Maura Ellis are loving, fun, and different sisters.  Then, they are blindsided because their parents decide to sell their childhood home and give the girls 24 hours to get their stuff.  After reminiscing, the girls meet the future owners (whom the girls hate) and decide to throw a huge party.  However, this time the girls switch roles.  The safe sister, Maura, will cut loose and get crazy.  The party sister, Kate, will sit back and take care of everyone.  And as the party ensues Kate’s secrets, past classmates, drug dealers, and Maura’s secrets collide.

This movie is a great laugh-a-minute comedy.  It mixes Pitch Perfect, Bridesmaids, and Project X into one big party.  With most Tina and Amy movies, Sisters is a SNL reunion with Maya Rudolph and Rachel Dratch. Like in Trainwreck, John Cena knocks it over the ropes as Pazuzu, the drug dealer with an interesting safe word.  Its easy to miss a joke because you are laughing so hard at the last one. This is not a chick flick, but a pure comedy and a great date movie.  There is about 10 minutes of mushiness but the laughs are still there.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I am not a hot head. I am brassy – Kate

I’m sure I do – Pazuzu

Did you see your parents die? – Maura
