Centuries ago, Thanos loved his land of Titan but he feared that the growing population would use up all the finite resources, causing devastation. His solution was to eliminate half the population to save everyone else. While some would call this genocide, Thanos called it mercy. Now, Thanos prophecy came true and Titan is rubble. So Thanos wants to save the galaxy from suffering the same fate Titan did. To do this, the must find the 6 infinity stones and insert them into his glove. And with a snap of his finger, he can show mercy to the galaxy and remove half the population. However, the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, Black Panther & Wakanda, Spiderman, and Dr. Strange will do everything to stop him.

So there will be NO spoilers what so ever in this review. With that said, this movie is the ultimate culmination of the 18 films before it (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Each character, you have grown to love, keeps their personalities while delving into new areas and interactions they never have before.  You will see the perfect mash-up of personalities in new and old territories.  You will laugh, cry, be amazed, and shocked like never before.  The end will leave you … well … dumbfounded and oddly satisfied while wanting more.  See this movie before someone spoils it for you. And if you have seen it, keep the ending quiet. This should go without saying but stay past the end credits for a sneak peek into the future.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

After watching his father T’Chaka die at the U.N. conference, Prince T’Challa isn’t worried about becoming the king.  He is saddened to do it without his father.  However, his mother Ramonda tells T’Challa his father has been looking forward to the day his son would take the throne.  However, before he can take the throne, other royals from other tribes are allowed to challenge him to a fight.  Stripped of his Black Panther powers, T’Challa is challenged by a member of the Jabari tribe.  In a battle of strength and wit, T’Challa wins.  He is graced with the Black Panther power again starts his rule.  His rule’s first threat is the theft of one of their vibranium relics by Ulysses Klaue.  Decades ago with the help of T’Chaka’s brother N’Jobu, Klaue snuck into Wakanda.  Klaue stole a large stash of vibranium and set off a bomb that killed many Wakandans.  T’Challa and the Wakandans have been looking for him and feel this is their chance to make him pay for his crimes.  T’Challa, Nakia (his ex), Okoye (his general), and Shuri (his sister and technical designer) go undercover to find the relic and Klaue before he can sell it to an American buyer.  After a long fought battle on the streets of South Korea, they believe they have Klaue in their clutches.  But he is aided in an escape by a masked man.  T’Challa notices something special about this man, he is wearing the same royal ring T’Challa wears.  This masked man will bring chaos to Wakanda with the hope of world domination. But it’s the masked man’s history that will leave T’Challa questioning everything he knows about his father, their history, and Wakanda’s place in the world.

Wow.  Just Wow.  The attention to detail in each costume, makeup, and scenes will leave you in awe.  This complex storyline will leave you choosing sides like Professor X and Magneto.  Both men want Wakanda to thrive but have different paths on how it should develop.  One man believes the tradition of keeping Wakanda’s abilities a secret because the world can not handle it, should continue.  He wants to help by defending other nations when needed but always in secret.  The other man wants Wakanda to thrive by sharing its knowledge, those who don’t yield will be broken.  This movie covers issues of colonization, self-help, and community/global involvement.  While 3D is not needed to enjoy this film, Dolby is a must.  With everything to love about this movie, the beginning felt extremely rushed.  It when through Wakanda’s history and Erik’s motivation in 10 minutes.  It was a lot to absorb.  10 more minutes to allow the viewers to delve into deeper should have been granted.  This should go without saying but stay past the end credits. And don’t worry, Stan Lee makes the party along with Eric Killmonger’s mask.  Also, if you miss the first 10 minutes of the movie, you will miss everything.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

This never gets old – Black Panther

Show him who you are – Ramonda

Naw, I’m just feeling it – Erik

For Wakanda, without question – Okoye

A father who has not prepared their child to go on without him has failed as a father – T’Chaka

Renee works for the small IT department for LeClaire Magazine.  She is tired of sitting in a small basement office in Chinatown.  She wants to work in the Manhatten office with all the other employees.  She considers applying for the receptionist job.  But she is hindered by her insecurities when she notices that everyone in the Manhattan looks like a model.  To get her spirits up, she decides to start working out again and falls, bumping her head twice.  When she wakes up, she is overcome with self-confidence.  Even though she looks the same to everyone else, her confidence shines through.  She starts going after the job, man, and the life she wants.

Renee’s confidence is contagious.  It’s easy to see that attitude is everything.   However, this movie does warn the viewer of confidence becoming cockiness.  As Renee starts to succeed, she starts to hurt her friends and boyfriend.  And while we laugh at Renee’s renewed openness, you (and Renee) learn that every woman has self-esteem issues.  With the great concept of this movie, the jokes are uninspired and Michelle William’s voice is worse than nails on a chalkboard.  If you want to kill 2 hours with a few laughs and a self-esteem boost, see this movie at the matinee price.  Otherwise, wait for On Demand.

Brea is an investigative journalist that just got scooped for her big story.  She is furious that her year-long investigation of real-estate corruption was turned into a fluff piece.  She gives her boss a piece of her mind and leaves.  Knowing she may not have a job, Brea still goes out to her birthday dinner with her boyfriend John, his friend Darren, and her friend (Darren’s girlfriend) Malia.  She tries to put on a brave face but she eventually cracks and tells them the truth.  After Darren spills the beans, John tells Brea that he is taking her away for a weekend so she can leave all her stress behind.  On their way up the mountain, John and Brea stop for gas.  John is harassed by bikers while Brea talks to Cara.  Brea can tell something is wrong with Cara but doesn’t have the nerve to ask.  Brea goes to meet John only to see he is in a fight with bikers.  Deputy Sally sees the fight and tells the bikers to back off.  John and Brea leave only to be chased by the bikers later.  They lose the bikers and head to the vacation home.  They have a lovely time until Darren comes unannounced with Malia.  John is furious and in the middle of an argument, John hears ringing from Brea’s purse.  Brea knows its not her phone and suspects it’s Cara.  After unlocking the phone, she finds evidence of a sex trafficking ring.  When Cara comes looking for her phone, the two couples will be in a life and death situation.

When making a movie about a $150 billion dollar business with millions of victim, you would expect a stronger storyline about sex trafficking.  Accept 60% of the movie is about John and Brea’s relationship, 10% about John and Darren’s relationship, and 10% about Darren and Malia’s relationship. That only leaves 20% of the movie for trafficking victims.  You are so far removed from the problem, it doesn’t feel real.  You would expect faces of real victims to run with the credits, but you get nothing but highway.  For such a serious topic with plenty of real-life stories, you would just expect more.  This is a movie for Lifetime, not the big screen.

I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars

Let them come – Brea

In 1971, The Panther 21 were released from prison. One of those 21 was Afeni Shukar. She was not only outspoken but she was 7 months pregnant. Later, Afeni and her two children, Tupac and Sekyiwa, were being watched by the FBI. They were following because the FBI was searching for Tupac’s stepfather Mutulu. After being raided, Afeni decides to move to Baltimore. Although Tupac and Sekyiwa dread the movie, Tupac will find his love and passion for lyrical wordplay and prose at the Baltimore School of the Arts. And while Tupac is getting lead roles, he develops a friendship with Jada Pinkett. With everything developing, Afeni decides she wants the kids to move to Oakland. Tupac learns that violence is everywhere but Oakland’s crimes are out in the open. In Oakland, Tupac connects with Leila, who gets him an audition with Shock G of Digital Underground. With a few bars, Tupac is on the road living the life. With his first deal signed, Tupac is on his way to becoming an icon.

Wow. Just Wow. Demetrius Shipp Jr. embodies Tupac not only in looks but in voice and mannerisms. Props and wardrobe studied Tupac’s style to get the look and tech right for each time period. During each time period, the composer and director made sure each song was right for the scene. Not just Tupac’s music but the top songs of that time. Also, this movie makes a great transition. The first half is Tupac narrating by way of interview. The second half occurs after he bailed out. It is impossible to view this movie without a feeling of dread. It’s a countdown to his life. This movie followed his movie career along with his acting career. You will learn several things about Tupac. And while it painted Tupac as a kind, intelligent, compassionate man; they didn’t polish him up to make him seem perfect. It’s those flaws that lead him down the wrong path. His biggest flaw was being loyal to a fault. However, missing this movie is a flaw.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

“Your cells are going to help a lot of people and you will be immortal” is the quote a given to the media by a doctor who performed a biopsy on Henrietta Lacks after she died. The harvested her cells and realized they could grow outside the human body. These cells have been used for research in polio, HPV, AIDS, in vitro fertilization, and more. Even today HeLa (after Henrietta Lacks) cells are being used for medical experiments. But nothing was known about Henrietta’s contributions to the world, outside the medical community, before Rebecca Skloot decided to write about her. This movie is about the making of the book. After seeing her doctors treat her father unethically, Rebecca learns about Henrietta and becomes fascinated by the women who helped the world. Rebecca has to overcome doctor’s, publishers, and a patriarchal family system before she could put words on paper. She finally got a chance to meet with Henrietta’s children and hear their stories about their mistrust of John Hopkins, further experimentation of the family, and how they came to know of their mother’s importance. But she and Henrietta’s youngest daughter Debra want to know more about her mother. Rebecca is willing to oblige and take Debra, but she doesn’t understand that Debra’s mistrust of people and the abuse she has suffered will make working with her difficult. As Rebecca and Debra learn about Henrietta, HeLa, and the family’s history, Debra starts to breakdown. What will it take to make Henrietta as famous as her cells? And what toll will it take on Debra?

Based on the biography, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, is a well acted, written, and directed piece of film (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It’s hard to believe this movie went straight to HBO. It is remarkably shot to show the countryside of Clover and its contrast, the city of Baltimore. The actor’s passion is seen in each shot to get the family’s essence and perspective just right. Watching this movie and how the family was treated will make you angry and feel hurt, but use this as a teaching tool to understand why some don’t trust doctors or hospitals. And just when you believe the family has been taken advantage off enough, you learn about their past. And it’s not pretty or healthy. But as proof that the strength of the HeLa cells runs through this family. Don’t miss this film.  Warning, you may need tissues for the last 15 minutes of this film.

On her last night at college before spending a summer abroad in Australia, Jess spends one crazy night with her 3 friends at George Washington University. She promises Alice, Frankie, and Blair that they will remain friends but their kids will play together. Ten years later, Jess is getting married and Alice is throwing a bachelorette party in Miami. While Jess wants to have fun, she is worried that getting too crazy will ruin her campaign to become a state senator. However, when Jess sees Alice at the airport, she knows that Alice wants to get wild and loose. Once in Miami, the girls meet up with Peppa, Jess’s friend from Australia. After a fun night, Blair decides to get Jess a stripper and Frankie provides. The girls head home and have some more fun when there is a knock at the door. It’s a really hot guy and that wants to go to the restroom then dance for Jess. But once he gets too aggressive, Alice takes over and accidentally kills him. They try to save him, but it’s too late. As they continue to figure what to do, there is another knock at the door. They realized the majority of the houses outside walls are made out of glass. They attempt to move the body before the pizza guy sees it. After a few slices and a few failed attempts of moving the body, the girls decide to call Blair’s uncle. At first, he tells them it was an accident and they will be ok. However, when he learns they moved the body and cleaned the scene, he tells them they can get 15 to life for tampering with a crime scene. They decide they have too much to lose so they must get rid of the body. Jess starts to panic and calls her fiance Peter. During the middle of the conversation, Peter asks “Do you still want to marry me”. Frankie grabs Jess’s phone and screams “No”, but Peter just hears no and believes Jess wants to break up. After discussing the issues with his friends at his bachelor party, he decides to drive to Miami and get Jess back. This happy couple is about to have a Rough night.

It wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t great. While the movie was very crazy, the scenes with Peter are the funniest. This isn’t as raunchy as other films, but it does have a lot of dirty moments. Don’t go into this movie expecting a pure comedy. It’s more of a “what will happen next” drama. You never know how bad it is about to get off the girls and how they will handle it. It is amazing that they were able to tie in the Marissa Alexander story, Joseph Oberhandsley story, Lisa Nowak story, and the Human Centipede movie in want film (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Now to answer the movies biggest question, you must stay to after the end credits. If you do, you will be treated to The Kiwi Song by Kate McKinnon. Yes, that is really her voice. So this is Matinee or Red Box, your choice
