Lethal Soccer Mom – Review

Lethal Soccer Mom – LMN – 2 hours and 1 minute

Lethal Soccer Mom

Cameron is not happy about moving to a new neighborhood and school but her mother Kate thinks its the best decision for her soccer future.  By joining the 4-time state champions – The Wildcats – Cameron will be seen by more college recruits.  And Kate believes Cameron has what it takes to join the professional soccer stage.  Coach Rhonda agrees with Kate.  However, she doesn’t see Cameron as an asset for her team, Rhonda sees her has a hindrance to her daughter Hailey’s future.  Rhonda has done everything to improve her daughter’s skills, get her notice, and make her a first string soccer player.  So, when Cameron comes to the Wildcats with the hopes of being a starter, Rhonda will lie, cheat, seduce, and attack to end Cameron’s dream and make Hailey a star.

This movie slowly turns up the crazy between each commercial break.  But Kate and Cameron make so many mistakes it’s easy for Rhonda to manipulate them.  It’s not without saying that Kate doesn’t have some tricks up her sleeve.  But she is no match for Rhonda.  With all that, there are two sad facts.   First, Kate and Rhonda are two sides of the same ‘soccer mom’ coin.  Second, Hailey hates soccer.  If she loved it and Rhonda was doing all this, it would be understandable.  But since she hates it, it makes Rhonda look more like a stage mom than a soccer mom.  This is a good one to watch for the bad guy’s manipulation skills.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

The Archer – Review

The Archer – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Archer

Confused, Lauren sits and waits for her day in court while her mother signs papers.  Since Lauren defended her friend against an abusive boyfriend, she is a good student, and she has never been in trouble, she is assured that she will walk or get a slap on the wrist.  However, the judge thinks she has a volatile temper and needs to spend an undetermined amount of time in a youth correctional facility.  Lauren is completely taken aback to the judge’s remarks and sentence as the bailiff take her away.  Her first day there, she meets a runner Rebecca, the warden Bob, and the warden’s son Michael.   Rebecca thinks Lauren is hiding things but sees she is strong.  Bob takes an interest in Lauren because she is an archer like him.  He believes he can help her develop her skills while she is locked away.  Michael works at the detention center and Lauren notices he has an unhealthy interest in the girls and loves power.  Lauren tries to make the best of it until she learns most of the girls are there for minor infractions and sees multiple cases of abuse.  But when she learns why the girls are really there, Lauren and Rebecca will go on the run and risk their lives to help others.

Inspired by true events in Pennsylvania, this movie will make you question prisons for profit especially in the cases of children.  Lauren is the archetype for a strong female lead.  She uses her wits to think herself out to situations and adapts with little hesitation.  Another strong aspect of this movie is Lauren’s ability to not become bitter about the past.  She was betrayed by a friend whom she was attracted too, she doesn’t let that stop her from protecting or connecting to others.  She is like an arrow.  She shoots straight even though her start wobbles.

Garage Sale Mysteries: Murder in D Minor

As Mr. Dietz is dying he decides to get his affairs in order by auctioning off his art collection for charity.  Two paintings have caught the eye of Helen.  She believes they were stolen during the raid of her home in Nazi Germany.  Jen and Dani go there for support but find an interesting piano has been added to the list.  The two women want it for their store.  After winning their items, Jen and Dani are approached by Jacque.  He wants the piano for a client and is willing to pay whatever they want.  But Jen refuses to sell and gives the piano to her friend Dean to inspect.  When Dean is attacked and the piano is vandalized, Jen wants answers.  Those answers will lead to a pre-meditated murder.  Jen has to find a killer, Dean’s attacker, and the dark secrets the piano hides.

If you are going to make a movie centered around the Holocaust, say the word Holocaust.  It’s not a dirty word, it’s history.  With that being said, this movie offers a great mystery along with a spooky nature.  With Jacque lurking around every corner and a killer on the loose, Jen must always look over her shoulder.  This is a decent addition to the series but it’s not the best.

Her Worst Nightmare – Review

Her Worst Nightmare – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

Her Worst Nightmare

Dakota sits in her Advance Psychology of Trauma class with one huge secret.  She is an expert on the subject since she was kidnapped and raped for an extended period of time with two other girls.  She is focused on living a “normal” life by doing all the things she dreamt of doing while in captivity.  She can write amazing papers but she is failing exams.  She asks her teacher Dr. Campbell for help but gets a bad vibe.  The new TA Max seems nice and offers help.  While Addie started on her bad side, she is quickly becoming an ally.  So, when items from her horrible past come back to the present, Dakota starts to panic.  She knows she is being followed and toyed with but she is not sure by who.   Could it be the man who kidnapped her, someone he knows, or a new person in her life?  Just when she thought the worst was over, her nightmare comes back for her.

Creepy times creepy.  With an opening reminiscent of the Cleveland kidnapping, you know this type of trauma is real and sickening.  As Dakota bravely sits in class and speaks up about “imagined fear” being a way of life for half the population, you get a pit in your stomach.  Most, thankfully, will never know Dakota’s trauma but her fear is understood.  As her past comes back with toys, locked doors, and videotape, you hope this evil person will be found and Dakota will get the ultimate revenge.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Season for Love – Review

Season for Love – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Season for Love

Tyler is back in her hometown of Red Rock, Texas, home of the best BBQ in Texas.  Her daughter Rosie is excited to come and see her grandmother Jo again.  Tyler falls right into step at her mom’s BBQ restaurant but notices the lunch shift is slow.  An influx of new BBQ eateries have taken businesses away and times are getting hard for Jo.  Tyler wants to help her mother but she reveals that she recently lost her job.  She is worried about entering into the annual BBQ contest but Rosie and Jo encourage her to try.  She decides to do it for the $25,000 prize.  The money will allow Jo to make updates to the restaurant and save her business.  Corey has written 3 successful books, has a line of cookware, and restaurants but he misses home.  So when his friend Jay asks him to be apart of the BBQ contest, he gladly accepts, without telling his manager Sophia.  Sophia has lined up a chance at a TV show, but he wants to go home.  She tells him to spend a few days there but he must come back to New York as soon as possible.  When Tyler and Corey see each other the old sparks fly.  This second chance at love will need to survive a contest, a job offer, and a chance at fame.

While it does follow the Hallmark pattern, it’s still pretty funny.  The movie offers a great score and amazing food tips.  Try not to get hungry while watching it.  While, it’s nice to see both make a sacrifice for love, love is not the only reason.  Tyler does it for her daughter and Corey does it for his sanity.  This movie is a prime example of how Hallmark can keep up the pattern but still make it fresh and fun to watch.  Get comfortable and have some BBQ nearby.

Killer Night Shift – Review

Killer Night Shift – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

Killer Night Shift

Nurse Irene is furious at her shift manager for cutting her hours.  She bumps a 37-week pregnant Trisha, to get answers from her shift manager.  The manager tells Irene that drugs have gone missing during her hours and they believe she is the culprit.  Irene makes a dramatic exit that ends with a one-week suspension.  She goes back to Adele and begs for a job until her suspension is up.   Adele worries but offers her a job as a home care nurse for Trisha.  Trisha was put on bed rest due to placenta previa.  With bed rest, Trisha will deliver a healthy baby.  But if she exerts herself, she will need a C-section.  With a solemn look, Irene agrees.  On her first day, Irene lays down the law.  She is not a maid, she is a nurse.  She will cook, do dishes, and attend to medical needs.  Nothing more.  Then, there is a knock at the door.  It’s Kate.  A maternity nurse Trisha met earlier that week; she barges in and takes over.  Soon, Kate is there every day and edging Irene out.  Irene knows something just isn’t right about Kate.  She is too involved.  But when Kate learns that Trisha was given the wrong prescription and some of her drugs are missing, Irene is fired.  But Irene won’t go away quietly.  She knows something is wrong with Kate.  And she will find out.  Come hell or high water.

This is one to watch and keep saved.  With two potential bad guys, you have to consider both a suspect.  With Irene’s bad past and Kate’s neediness, it’s easy to see how Trisha is confused.  And this movie really picks up where other’s end.  Usually, when the husband comes home, it’s to police vehicles, a coroner, and a dead body being wheeled out.  But when David comes home, everything looks peaceful.  He had no clue Trisha is tied up and begging for her life and the life of her baby from a crazy nurse.  This has everything you want and more.  While it is a crazy nurse movie (which has been done a million times before) it sparks new interest in the Lifetime genre.  This is one to watch.  And believe that you will never look at tulips the same way again.

Deadly Shores – Review

Deadly Shores – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Deadly Shores

Anna is happy to walk away from her psychiatrist Dr. Shaw and into her arms of her new husband Richard Palmer.  Dr. Shaw believes that Anna is being taken advantage of because she has only known Richard for 3 months and for her sizable inheritance.  But Anna believes the good doctor has been taking advantage of her too.  So, she gets on a boat to meet Richard at the dock but he is very late picking her up.  Once in her new home, Anna learns some interesting things.  First, Richard does not like to be disturbed in his office while working.  Second, the housekeeper Ms. Argyle is a stickler to the former Mrs. Palmer’s schedule.  And the first Mrs. Palmer committed suicide but her body wasn’t found.  Only her cane.  With this information, strange things start happening around the house.  Anna hears knocking, sees shadowy figures, and Richard is starting to become short tempered.  She feels like she is losing it.  But that is all part of the plan.  However, messing with Anna may be the wrong move.

Stick with this film.  So are so many characters with questionable motives, you don’t know who to trust.  The housekeeper uses jewelry to start an argument between Anna and Richard.  Beth is having an affair with Richard.  Richard is working with Beth on a disturbing plan.  And the townspeople seem to know more than they say.  While it takes time for the story to build, it’s worth it for the last 7 minutes.  Those few minutes redeem this movie and make it something you need to see.

Pearl in Paradise – Review

Pearl in Paradise – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Pearl in Paradise

Alex is a brilliant photographer with great ideas but she often misses deadlines.  She wants the Creative Director promotion but her boss tells her she has to wow them and be on time.  Or someone else will get the job.  Alex decides to use the 30th anniversary of the magazine to pitch an idea.  The 30th anniversary is represented by pearls.  When she looks up pearls, she finds the most famous is a blue pearl in Fiji created by a clam instead of an oyster.  She knows of one writer who said he saw it and wrote a book about it.  Her boss loves the idea and says if she can get a picture of the blue pearl in time, she is a shoe in for the promotion.  Colin was a best-selling writer, years ago.  His publisher’s assistant Derrick meets him for coffee.  He warns Colin, ‘Write something that sales or we will drop you’.  When Derrick learns about the opportunity to work with Alex in Fiji to find the blue pearl, he knows it’s a great marketing strategy for Colin.  However, Colin has been keeping a big secret from everyone.  He has never been to Fiji or seen the blue pearl.  As they go around Fiji and get closer, Colin knows he must confess to Alex.  But will his confession make him lose her for good?

This treasure hunt wrapped in a love story is a slight change from the Hallmark brand but not completely.  However, it’s a predictable ending that doesn’t require much attention for the leading couple.  It’s the people of Fiji with the legends of the blue pearl that truly draw you in.  Through their stories and the land, you will be engrossed in the hunt for the blue pearl.  So, DVR this movie and save it for a rainy day.

The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time – Review

The Last Sharknado: It’s About Time – Syfy – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Last Sharknado: It's About Time

Fin lands and looks around for his son Gil.  Only to realize he is alone.  His son left him a message.  They have time traveled to the first Sharknado.  However, since you could only go back to a time period once, Gil could not go with his dad.  Fin has to use the flux capacitor in Gil’s wings pin and travel at 88 MPH to jump home when he is successful.  When he gets out of the car, Fin sees he sees he is surrounded by dinosaurs.  As the dodges one, Fin encounters Nova, Brian, and April.  A non-robot April but human April.  They explain that just as they were about to die, Gil jumped in time and pull them out.  They have been waiting for a year for Fin to meet up with them.  Now they wait for the next Sharknado with the hope that ending this one will end them all.

So, this review isn’t really about good or bad.  Sharknado has gotten a cult following because of its over-the-top nature and being good at being bad.  So this review will be based on consistency.  While time-traveling makes this over the top, it just didn’t hold the viewers’ interest long enough.  The pace of the movie was slow and becomes boring quickly as they entered each time period.  While it felt that the time periods should have been more focused on Fin than Nora, they try to make them all relevant to the overall all plot and character development.  Even though it comes to a good conclusion for the series and included all the cast members, it just felt dragged out and repeat of the same storyline in each timeline.  The final movie should have gotten a lot better but will leave fans disappointed.  But pay attention to the homage to Back to the Future and The Princess Bride (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

Garage Sale Mysteries: The Pandora's Box Murders

Dani and Jen are the main focus of an antique reality TV show. Although Dani is ready for her close up, Jen is a bit uncomfortable with the exaggerations. During a break from filming, Tamara comes into the store and asks for information on her mother-in-law Elizabeth’s Pandora’s box. Pandora boxes are notorious for destroying their contents if the puzzle is solved incorrectly. Tamara worries she could destroy something valuable. So she asks Jen to user her expertise to solve the puzzle. Jen agrees and starts filming. After the day is done, Jen looks for the box and it’s missing. When Jen finds the box, Tamara will be dead, Elizabeth’s cause of death will be questioned, and Jen will be looking down the barrel of a gun.

Based on the book series, this mystery is just as complex as the Pandora’s box (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  As Jen gets a step closer to finding Tamara’s killer, she learns more about the victim and the box.  Both objects are clouding Jen’s judgment of the situation.  This confusion is a new element to Jen’s character and makes for a compelling storyline about the murder.  As always, it’s funny to see people to “stay out of it” and “leave it to the police”.  Jen will never stop finding justice.

A Summer To Remember

Dr. Jessica is maxed out.  Her best friend is 3 weeks away from giving birth, she is a single parent, and she is up for a promotion.  While living with her daughter Ava, Jessica can’t seem to unplug.  They both need this trip to Fiji. After a little time together, Jessica eloped with Greg (Ava’s father) and got married in Fiji.  So, Fiji holds a special place in Jessica’s heart.  They always believed they would come back after graduation and start a new life.  But before Greg died, he made Jessica promise she would take Ava to Fiji one day.  Now, Jessica is fulfilling that promise.  After a few hours there, Ava and Jessica create a challenge for each other.  Ava must put down her camera and Jessica must give up her phone.  Jessica finally pays attention to the world around her and twice, love knocks at her door.    Will she answer it for Will or Dr. Trevor?

While this is a typical Hallmark movie, it just feels like the overall plot is missing.  This movie doesn’t feel like a movie.  It feels more like a part of a series.  The overall story felt incomplete and devoid of true emotions.   Hallmark must understand that new scenery to an old storyline isn’t enough to keep a viewers’ interests.  If you are determined to use the same plot, at least make it funny or add more drama to the storyline.

At the age of twelve, Elle experienced the murder-suicide of her parents; after her mother Margo’s drunken breakdown in response to her father’s infidelity.  Elle learns that her father James had an affair with Carol Winters.  Now, Carol is a marketing executive with a husband and a 17-year-old son Logan.  But in the past, Carol and her husband Sam were separated because Sam had an affair with his secretary Beth.  So, Carol started to date James and he left Elle and Margo to be with Carol.  But when Carol saw how the separation was affecting her son Logan, she broke up with James and reconciled with Sam.  James came back to Margo, but the damage was done.  Elle believes that if Carol and James didn’t have “one small indiscretion”, her parents would be alive.  So, Elle wants to destroy Carol’s life by ruining her job, Logan, and her marriage to Sam.  And when Carol is at her lowest, Elle will kill her.  But the first step in Elle’s plan, move into Carol’s guest house.

Since the murder-suicide happens in the beginning, you watch the movie with the full knowledge of why Elle is coming after the Winters Family. You get to see her ingenious plan slowly come to fruition when she takes photos, threatens people, and befriend each member of the family.  However, watch this movie to root for Elle.  If you don’t, you will be angry at some of the character’s mistakes (i.e. leaving a book next to the computer marked “Passwords”, leaving key marked with what they open, and just leaving purse around with all your information).  It’s too easy for Elle to come into the family and slowly manipulate them.  So, watch this movie for Elle or not at all.  By the way, they left it open for a part 2.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Garage Sale Mystery: A Case of Murder – Review

Garage Sale Mystery: A Case of Murder – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Garage Sale Mystery: A Case of Murder

Jenn and Dani head to Mae’s garage sale in the country.  They find a mirror worth $12,000 and an old recorder.  Jenn and Dani buy them.  Once Dani sets up a tape in the recorder, Jenn presses play and gets a real shock.  She hears the recorder’s owner scream that someone was killing him.  Out of concern, Jenn remembers that Mae said her husband had run off again.  So Jenn goes to find him at a loft he recently rented.  She finds Dr. Vedders dead.  Jenn learns that Dr. Vedders is a retired psychiatrist that started working on his memoirs.  He headed a support group called, “When a Relationship Ends 101”; and none of his patients (Chris, Deb, and Kendell) were happy to hear of his retirement.  Also, he and his wife Mae were at odds.  He often left for days at a time and was frustrated over money issues in his marriage.  With the tape recorder broken, Jenn will do a little detective work to find Dr. Vedders killer.

Based on Garage Sale Stalker by Suzi Weinert, this is a Hallmark movie with a Lifetime twist and a SyFy boom (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has 4 possible suspects with questionable past and strong motives.  Being able to uncover the mystery with Jenn is the main ingredient that makes these movies so enticing to watch.  And you will be deliberating with yourself until the last 30 minutes on who killed Dr. Vedders.  And 90% will be wrong.  The subplots of Dani and the Woman Room are fun and entertaining fill-ins.  And dedicated fans will get their beloved banter between Jenn and Dr. Tramell & Jenn and Det. Lynwood.  She does get those guys steady business.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Unwritten Obsession – Review

Unwritten Obsession – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Unwritten Obsession

After writing a successful first book, Maya’s Fall, Skye is in a sophomore slump.  She has written a new novel but publishers hate it.  Her manager Chelsey tells her to write a sequel.  Skye considers it but walks out the meeting furious.  She is deeply in debt and out of money.  At the same time, Holly (an aspiring writer and Maya’s Fall fan) walks up to Skye and ask her to be her mentor and critique her book.  Holly admits she needs 3 more chapters, a title, and an ending before the book is complete.  First, Skye says no.  But when Holly says she will pay $2000, Skye accepts and drives them both to her house.  While Holly is in Skye’s home, Skye hears noises and Holly always push the boundaries.  Meanwhile, when Skye reads Holly’s book, she knows it’s a hit.  She decides to let Holly stay longer, so she can steal her book and give it to Chelsey as her own work.  Skye believes she has the upper hand until she looks through Holly’s computer.  Skye sees Holly has set up cameras in her home.  And one camera recorded her passing Holly’s book as her own.  Desperate for money, Skye wants Holly’s book and will do anything to get it.  Holly knows Skye is a thief and will do anything to prove it.  Only one woman can be on top.

This is a movie with no “good guy”.  It’s fun to play “who is crazier” when watching this movie.  Is it Holly for going into a stranger’s home, filming, and mentally torturing her.  Or is it Skye, who allowed a stranger into her home and stealing Holly’s book under the guise of helping her.  This movie has an intriguing storyline with memorable characters.  It does leave a few unanswered questions.   Those question will not be on this blog because they will be spoilers.  And the “why” is a stretch for the storyline but predictable Lifetime.  Unwritten Obsession will require your full attention, so don’t watch it unless you have time.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

That one was off the record. Just ignored that last one – Chelsey

I am inviting you to my home. This is an exercise in trust for all involved – Skye

Sun, Sand, & Romance – Review

Sun, Sand, & Romance – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Sun, Sand, & Romance

Workaholics Eric and Kate are going on a vacation.  They plan on romance but know a little work will be done.  As soon as they arrive Kate sees Michael “Shep” Shepard.  They were camp counselors 3 years in a row during high school.  So when Kate learns he is the Activites Director, she is not surprised.  When the 3 talk, Shep reveals that Gus is in the same hotel.  Gus is Eric’s idol and he hopes Gus will become a client.  During their dinner, Eric asks Kate if he can step away and introduce himself to Gus.  Kate says no but soon changes her mind because it’s business.  When Eric comes back, he has a golf date set for the next day.  Kate decides she will use the time to work so she can get the new VP job at her firm.  As she is sitting pool side, her papers blow away and Shep is there to catch them.  He convinces Kate to go on a trial while paperwork prints.  The more time Eric and Kate spend on the trip, the more time she spends with Shep thinking about her past.  When Eric gets on one knee, she will have an answer for him.

Sigh.  While the images of the island are wonderful, there is not much else to this movie.  The setup is basic, the storyline has been done, and it plays too much on good friend vs. bad boyfriend.  In reality, Eric isn’t bad.  He is the guy he has always been and Kate was fine with it.  Being himself doesn’t make him a bad boyfriend.  He is just honest.  While the actors did the best they could with the script, it’s just not enough.  This movie is background noise with a predictable ending.

I give it 1.5 out of 5 stars

Life is a book. And I am ready for the next chapter – Kate

I promise this vacation will be 80 percent romance, 20 percent work – Eric

I just don’t want to become a “lifer” – Shep

I think we have our first casualty – Gus

Whitney: Can I Be Me – Review

Whitney: Can I Be Me – Showtime – 1 hour and 40 minutes

Whitney: Can I Be Me

Whitney Houston was a diamond in the ruff when she first met Clive Davis.  As the only girl in a family of 5, she was the apple of her father Michael’s eye and fell under the tough rule of her mother Cissy.  She was trained to be a singer and take the reigns to become a global sensation.  Living through riots and drugs was not the image Clive and the record label wanted to present with their latest artist.  They wanted a polished pop princess.  And with a strict church going family, Whitney could play the role of All-American Good Girl.  In high school, Whitney kept her success quiet.  Only her friend Robyn knew the truth because Whitney had a lot of insecurities.  However, the turning points in her career both came at the Soul Train Awards.  The first turning point was getting booed while her nomination was announced.  She could not believe she was booed after years of success.  But she was too pop for the Soul Train audience.  The second turning point was meeting Bobby Brown.  The Bad Boy of R&B met his match with Whitney Houston.  While the outside world didn’t believe the Princess of Pop was with the Bad Boy, everyone who truly knew her understood.  She was a tough girl from Newark who needed a tough guy.  But as her relationships with Bobby, Robyn, and her family fall apart, so does Whitney.  At what point do you speak up?  Her personal bodyguard wrote a letter detailing her drug addiction and its effect on her performance.  He gave a sad warning of her fate and asked her management to bring in people to help.  But he was fired for his good deeds.  Her make-up artist was disgusted with people “compliments” on her appearance; she made sure she let Whitney know she was dying.  Robyn tried to stay in Whitney’s corner as a friend but as drugs and Bobby got in the way, Robyn left Whitney’s side.  This documentary reveals that drugs were not the real downfall of Whitney Houston, just a symptom of bigger issues.  She felt like she didn’t just let down her fans but she let down God.  That knowledge was the true fall of Whitney Houston.

This documentary is unlike others.  It doesn’t try to shine Whitney up or make her look like a villain.  It shows a woman falling apart under her own fame.  Now don’t be fooled, several people spoke up for Whitney and attempted to help.  But as people tried to help, even more, brought her down.  Unlike a lot of documentaries, they don’t place all the blame on Bobby.  While both had their demons before they first met, they shared their addiction when they were together and amplified each others habit. Also, this documentary goes deeper into the relationship of Robyn and Whitney; as well as the effect it had on Whitney’s marriage.  With never-before-seen footage of Whitney, this movie may be the first time Whitney could be Whitney.  This documentary was only missing current interviews from Bobby and Cissy to give it validity.  However, it’s obvious to see why they would decline.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I absolutely would – Cissy

She was trying t get my attention because I was fly – Bobby

He loved her as herself – Pattie

Garage Sale Mystery: Murder Most Medieval

While at a garage sale, Jenn finds a suit of armor that would be perfect for one of her clients, Mr. Bill Wallace.  He is excited to have the knight’s armor and names it Sir Rags to Riches (after Jenn’s store of course).  The next day another buyer, Prof. Robert McNary, comes into Jenn’s store asking to buy the armor.  Jenn informs him that the armor is sold and declines to give up the buyers information.  The next morning, Jenn and Dani notice their store’s front door is open and objects have been moved.  She doesn’t report it because nothing was stolen.  Later, Jenn goes to Bill’s house to appraise the armor but notices the sword has changed and there is blood dripping from it.  The open the armor to find a man inside.  It’s Prof. McNary.  Jenn tells Det. Lynwood about the break in and that she believes he was the culprit to get the armor.  After talking to Dr. Trammel, she learns he was murdered.  With a list of suspects (disgruntled student, an ambitious teacher’s assistant, a neglected spouse, and a romantic rival), Jenn and Det. Lynwood will have their work cut out for them.

Based on the Garage Sale Mystery by Suzi Weinert, this tale has a lot of misdirects that will keep watchers guessing (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You will not be able to look away and you shouldn’t, missing one moment will throw you off.  For seasoned fans of the series, you will not be disappointed.  Dr. Trammel makes is famous dad jokes, while Jenn’s family begrudgingly supports and gets involved in her cases.  New fans will wonder if Jenn is so good at finding criminals, how come she gets gypped at finding antiquities for her clients.

At Home in Mitford – Review

At Home in Mitford – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

At Home in Mitford

Cynthia, a famous author, has writer’s block. Since her divorce, a year ago, she has not been able to come up with a title, yet alone a book. Her publisher warns her that she has 45 days to turn something in or lose her deal. She decides to go to her uncle’s home in Mitford for inspiration. He encouraged her to read and write; along with being her biggest fan. She has been avoiding his home since he passed away because she knows she will have to sell it. But now she will go to Mitford, sell his home, and write her book. On her first day, she meets everyone in town. Everyone knows her and her uncle. Cynthia learns that in small towns, talk travels faster than the speed of light. While at her uncle’s home, she has an impromptu meeting with her neighbor Tim and “almost” his dog. She snaps at the Tim and returns to her writing. Later, Cynthia learns that Tim is the neighborhood Episcopal priest and the guy she almost ran off the road when she came into town. She instantly feels bad and starts to talk to him. She learns that he is the most eligible bachelor in town and is often visited by the town’s single women. Cynthia also meets Jack. An Atlanta relator that has his eyes on Cynthia and her property. He is determined to get the woman and the deal. When Cynthia’s friend Marjorie tells her to take the bull by the horns, Cynthia misunderstands and goes out with Jack. However, Marjorie wanted her to ask out Tim. With time winding down on her book and her uncle’s home, Tim knows he has to make his feelings known before Cynthia heads back to Boston or falls in love with Jake.

Based on At Home in Mitford by Jan Karon, this movie doesn’t feel like a movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It feels more like a pilot to a TV series. It introduces a slew of characters and gives them back stories beyond normal TV movies. At times it’s slow and frustrating to see these two adults act like teens. They whisper to their friends and all the neighbors about their feelings but don’t talk to each other. And what makes it worst is they often complain about the town being in everyone’s business. This a decent start to a series but not the best Hallmark has to offer.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Eat, Play, Love – Review

Eat, Play, Love – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Eat, Play, Love

Carly comes to her friend Michelle’s aid by volunteering as a vet for her dog shelter. Of course, Michelle didn’t tell Carly that Don (Carly’s high school sweetheart and Michelle’s brother) is working there as a dog/person match maker. Dan the Dog Man believes that dogs adopt their owners, not the other way around. Carly is quickly taken back to her high school feelings the moment she lays eyes on Dan. However, just when Carly builds hope for a second chance at love she sees Kristi. Her old high school bully and dog hater is the top correspondent for the local news channel and Dan’s girlfriend. Kristi makes her position in Dan’s life known before Carly can get one word out. When Kristi’s new job offer in New York brings a move and an engagement for Dan’s life, Carly wants to act fast. So, Michelle (the Meddler) offers to makeover Carly to get her brother’s attention. The two reconnect over dogs, duty, and the past. And just when Carly believes there is hope for the two, Kristi’s timing is impeccable. Kristi found a job for Dan as Executive Regional Assistant for the National Dog Rescue Association in New York. Carly knows Dan could never pass up that opportunity. But she refuses to give up. She decides it’s time to have a Countdown to Love before Dan leaves for New York and gets married to Kristi.

This is a cute story about dogs and love. This movie is good because a makeover isn’t the answer. It’s the connection between the couple and their love for animals that bring them together. But you must ask yourself, who is setting up who, who is training who, and who is teaching who. With so many players invested in this love game, it’s hard to understand who is running the board. While this movie has a predictable ending and villain, the subtle jabs and dogs are fun to watch. Also, the connection between Rita and Dr. Monroe is adorable.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Oh we have a secret weapon – Michelle

The might grow up and be accountants – Dan

Make man’s best friend, your best friend – Kristi

Locked In

Chris, Ann Marie, and their daughter Taylor sit for a family dinner. While discussing right and wrong, they hear a noise in their barn. During Chris’s investigation, he finds a man digging in his barn. They fight and the man gets Chris’s gun; then shoots Chris. Chris dies in his wife’s arms. Two years later Ann Marie has agoraphobia and Taylor is working the land. She also wants Taylor to stay home during college. Taylor wants her mom to get better so she can leave the home that has become a prison. Later, Taylor finds a note that states, “If anything happens to me, you’ll know where to find it. Just keep my family out of it!!”. On the back of the note, there is a map that leads straight to their barn. In the barn, Taylor finds a lot of money and a gun. She immediately calls her boyfriend Blake. He wants to give the money to the police, but Taylor sees the money as a way to fix her life.  Taylor’s mind is made up until a stranger comes knocking.

This movie uses a slow build to spark interest and build up mystique, but it just takes too long.  You will lose interest in this movie and become overly critical of the mother’s action.  But make sure you pay attention the dinner conversation in the first 5 minutes of the movie.  It’s there to give the watcher a perspective on what Ann Marie believes in when it comes to right and wrong.   While the acting is done to the perfection, it can’t win against a boring and lackluster script.  This movie just felt like it took too long and the watcher will quickly lose interest.   This movie can be skipped.

Tiffany Haddish: She Ready! From the Hood to Hollywood! - Review

Tiffany Haddish takes the stage in her hometown of LA.  Shot before Girls Trip and after Keanu, Tiffany talks about her tough and painful beginnings.  However, it’s those beginnings that made her who she is today.  Growing up in group homes and foster care, she lived with different types of people and it made her a well-rounded person.  She had a moment when she lived in a car, dealt with a horrible relationship, and buried a family member on her road to Hollywood but she did it with positivity and a sense of humor.   In an hour, you will learn why she is a black unicorn who refuses to be rent-to-own with the key to the matrix and a Groupon in her MLK bag.

Tiffany Haddish delivers an hour of pure comedy.  She delivers great story telling that feels like a personal conversation.  She leaves politics alone and only focuses on making the crowd laugh by using her story of triumph and success.  She is an example of making lemonade out of lemons.  She speaks on the impact Kevin Hart and Jada Pinkett-Smith in her life.  She dreams bigger now because she has always had to.  She is a shining light of not just overcoming circumstances but using them to be better and the first black unicorn.  Sit back and get ready to laugh purely from the joy from which she cursed you.  This comedy special should have been longer, the hour went by way too fast.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Summer at the Vineyard

Frankie and Nate have bills due and want to ensure the success of their vineyard, along with their relationship.  They hope that the Summer Art Walk is the best place to show off their first vintage wine.  Nate plans to cook a few hors d’oeuvre with Frankie’s wine.  It feels like a great plan but Frankie doesn’t feel like her wine is ready.  She slowly crumbles while hiding this secret from Nate.  She hopes she can speed up the aging process before Nate knows or they could lose the vineyard.  On the other hand, Nate heard that the Summer Art Walk was going to be canceled because the host’s road is closed due to an accident.  But he decides to host it at their vineyard, without telling Frankie.  Also, Nate created a new fertilizer and sprayed it all over the vineyard, now the plants are dying.  With days before the Summer Art Walk, Frankie and Nate are keeping secrets from each other.  But with the vintage not ready and the grape vines dying, will the communicate or have to sell the vineyard?

Based on Summer in Napa by Marina Adair, this isn’t a Hallmark love story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s a lesson in communication.  This couple keeps acting as individuals, even dividing the jobs at the vineyard.  This division is causing a huge mess of the crops and ultimately, the wine.  This lack of communication then trickles into their relationship.  It’s frustrating to know that they need to talk to each other to fix their problem, but they are just too bull headed to do it.  However, that is a huge reality for relationships these days.  There is not enough communication.  So, watch this movie and analyze your communication in your relationship.  Not just your partner’s.

Deadly Secrets By The Lake

Jennifer Riley left Thornwood Heights after being accused in her best friend’s, Abby Blake, disappearance.  Jennifer left behind two sisters (Lauren and Nova) and her father (Thomas) to become a detective in New York.  After catching the New York Stalker, Jennifer gets a jailhouse collect phone call from her sister Lauren.  Lauren was accused of murdering her partner Victor.  The two were seen arguing and she wakes up near his body, covered in his blood with her fingerprints on the weapon.  Jennifer comes back to a town that hates her to save her sister.  As she uncovers the mystery of Victor’s killer, Jennifer learns he was investigating Abby’s disappearance before his death.  She has to look into her past to help her sister.  She is met with disdain from Abby’s father (Connor) and her brother (Daniel).  However, Hayden (Abby’s other brother) is still in love with Jennifer. And the feelings are mutual but both are in relationships.  The more time Jennifer spends in Thornwood, the more she learns how entangled her family is with the Blake family.  But with each break in her sister’s case, her life is threatened via text and with physical violence.  She is ready to leave as soon as she saves her sister, but what makes her turn around.

This movie, a prequel to the book When Secrets Kill (A Thornwood Heights Mystery) by Zoe Carter, accomplishes its goal of getting you interested in the book.  It has a mix of Pretty Little Liars and Romeo and Juliet with Bold and the Beautiful (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Each character is introduced with purpose and a back story to get you interested in their connection to the Blakes and the Rileys.  It’s not long before you realize that the Lauren/Victor investigation is just a back story to Abby’s disappearance.   One viewing is not enough for this compelling drama.  So sit back with popcorn and wine.  Popcorn for the movie and wine for the book.

Girlfriend Killer – Review

Girlfriend Killer – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Girlfriend Killer

Carmen is a mother running a successful company called Simple Splendid Proposal. Carmen’s daughter Ayla is spending a few weeks with her father and his new girlfriend. In her business, Carmen produces and films proposals for couples with the help of her boyfriend Ryan. While most go well, her latest proposal between Emerson and Marissa ends badly. Marissa tells Emerson not to propose and that she has found someone else. She leaves and Carmen comforts Emerson. Carmen leaves and hopes her kind words helped. The next day Carmen comes home and her place has been ransacked and her client’s footage is stolen. Police tell her to get a security system and a dog. Carmen and Ryan just think its bad luck, but after a few “by chance” encounters with Emerson, Ryan is starting to worry. Then just moments after Ryan buys an engagement ring for Carmen, he is hit by a car. Detective Michelle takes Carmen and Ryan’s fears seriously and investigate. After searching Emerson’s home, she sees the depths of his obsession. Now they must find him, not because he is dangerous, but because Ayla will be home soon. Well, sooner than they think.

It only takes 30 minutes to rev up the crazy for this one. Don’t give up on the first quarter of the movie. This setup is necessary for you to connect to each character and to set up Emerson’s cunning maneuvers. Once this story gets going, you are on the edge of your seat. What sets this movie apart from other Lifetime dramas? The protagonist, antagonist, and police officers are not stupid. Normally if one is 1 or 2 make intelligent decisions, while the other is always a step behind. But the detective listens to the couple and investigates, Ryan believes Carmen, and they get police help. With all 3 matching wits, this is a mental battle with a race against time.  The only downfall was that it wasn’t longer.  Can you find the Seven part of this movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)?  This movie is well worth a watch, anytime and anyplace.

Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland – Review

Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland – Lifetime – 2 hours and 32 minutes

Michael Jackson: Searching for Neverland

On December 22, 2006, Bill Whitfield got a call to do security work. Bill was asked to escort a star and his children from the airport to their home. Bill accepted the job but was star struck when he learned that the star was Michael Jackson. After that first night, Michael asked Bill to be the head of security. Bill said yes without understanding what that truly meant. He was one button away from quitting when Paris Jackson thanked him for being there. He takes the job but asks Jeff to hire someone else to help. Jeff hires his cousin Javon Beard. Although it’s Javon’s first security job, he takes it seriously and he is excited to meet Michael Jackson. As time goes by, they get closer to Michael and his 3 children, but at the expense of their paychecks. As 5 months go by without either getting paid, Michael is getting increasingly paranoid and losing more money each day. With new management around, Bill and Javon get edged out.  As they sit in the Conrad Murray deposition, they recount the money, the fighting, and the loneliness of the King that wanted to be a man.

Based on the book, Remember the Time: Protecting Michael Jackson in His Final Days, it’s hard it tell if Michael was in denial about, delusional about, or protecting his children from his money troubles. You start to feel sorry for is confining life. He became the king of pop but a prisoner of his own fame. It is a heartwarming story of a father protecting his children. This move does become distracting because the lead can not mask his British accent. Imitating Michael’s icon voice is hard enough but the actor accent comes through on several occasions. After a few minutes, it becomes all you can focus on. You will forget this is a movie from the bodyguards’ perspective, and focus on just Michael. So if you can get past the accent, see this movie to get an in-depth view of Michael Jackson; the man, the son, the father.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Sinister Minister – Review

Sinister Minister – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

Sinister Minister

Trish and Siena move to a new town for a fresh start. Trish hopes to get over her ex and her daughter Siena will start doing better in school. Trish’s first stop is the local church. Pastor DJ is taking command of the congregation and Trish captures his attention. After being fired from her job, Trish is offered a position working for the pastor. At first, things are innocent but they are attracted to eath other. The problem: his wife. But when his wife dies tragically, he goes to Trish for support. Siena is disgusted because she knows the pastor is being very inappropriate. It’s not long before Trish and DJ are engaged, but DJ is getting closer to Siena.  This makes Trish uncomfortable because she can see that Siena and DJ are keeping secrets.  When Siena runs away, Trish gets sick, and Siena’s father dies, DJ has to be supportive of everyone. Or at least they think he is being supportive.

Based on a true story, DJ (as evil as he is) is the best character in this movie. He has got everyone in the town wrapped around his finger. In the beginning, Det. Leslie and Siena see through his charming demeanor, however, Siena starts to fall prey. Siena, a bratty teen, often acts wiser than her mother. But when she creates a secret relationship with DJ, she is another lamb to the slaughter. If you watch this movie, watch it only to cheer for the bad guy. It will make it truly enjoyable.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

All For Love – Review

All For Love – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

All For Love

Jo is working hard to create her next book after her last book received such horrible reviews. Her publisher Diana wants to put a lot of promotion behind the book, but when she does the first read through, she realizes Jo will need some help. Jo’s book is about a woman falling in love with a Navy Seal and to make sure it’s accurate, Diana knows a Navy Seal who can help, her brother Colin. Colin, tough as nails boot camp director, is determined to make sure her book detailed to the letter of a Navy Seals actions, duties, and supplies. However, Colin feels that giving direction is not enough, Jo must train like a Seal to respect what their do and their sacrifice. On the first day, she runs the team the wrong way with bad clothing, a snarky attitude, and she can’t swim. The second day is worse because she doesn’t show it. This infuriates Colin who understands that lack of commitment could lead to a Seal’s death. She apologizes and makes training her priority. As she takes her pledge seriously, she gains Colin’s attention and attraction. However, he has to start a new boot camp in New Zeland. Jo wants to stay put and endorse her book. How far can their commitment go?

While this does follow the arch of two people hating each other before they fall in love, this is a story about honor and commitment. Colin shows the true meaning of being a soldier and the sacrifices they must make to serve. Jo’s carefree attitude can be seen as a direct opposite, but she doesn’t feel that way. She feels they are both working hard to accomplish a goal.  So the same commitment she puts into writing, she puts into training. She bonds with her team and helps Colin grow. Notice his flowers as the movie progresses on. This is a good movie to DVR and watch. Plus it has some great laughs.
