After seeing the 9/11 attacks on TV, Capt. Nelson wants to rescind his retirement paperwork and go to Afghanistan with his men.  Lt. Bowers says no but when Cheif Warrant Officer Spencer learns the papers have not been filed, he rips them up and Nelson’s men will be the first strike against the Taliban.  Once they arrive in the war zone, Col.Mulholland gives the team of 12 men the code name Task Force Dagger.  Dagger must meet with General Abdul Rashid Dostum of the Northan Alliance and join forces.  They will use his intel and Dagger’s training & air strikes to release the Taliban’s stronghold on the area.  They have a few problems.  First, winter is near and the weather will hinder the air strikes.  Second, there is a turf war between the different factions of the Northern Alliance.  And last, the terrain is better accessible by horseback.  With little horse riding experience and only 6 horses, the Dagger splits off into 2 teams.  Alpha Team will meet up with Dostum while Bravo Team will stay at the base and relay messages to HQ until they get more horses.  This is a bloody and complicated battle that will have a lasting impact on both sides.

Based on Horse Soldiers by Doug Stanton, this movie gives you a small window into the first battle against the Taliban (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s frustrating to see Task Force Dagger face language barriers and infighting within the Northern Alliance.  When Nelson learns that Dostum is in contact with the Taliban, he is in total shock.  They consistently have pissing matches over the walkie-talkies.  While this is the first blow of a major war, it left its mark on American and Taliban history.  This movie does not hold back on any battle scene.  You will see blood, guts, dismemberment, and the after-effects of a suicide bomber.  So if you suffer from PTSD or shell shock, this movie can be skipped.  On the other side, it does show that the Taliban’s beliefs are not widely held among the Afghan people but it is deadly forced upon them.  This is just one more war on their soil.  And that’s the truly sad part about this movie.  Also, there is no need to see it in IMAX.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I told him I wanted back in and he said no – Nelson

You are cutting the head off your most venomous snake – Spencer

Bea believes that humans were latecomers to the forest and should allow the animals to roam freely in their gardens.  Her neighbor Mr. McGregor firmly disagrees.  So when Peter’s dad saw the fence going up, he went into Mr. McGregor’s yard and was killed and turned into a pie.  That harsh lesson taught Peter to be careful and devise plans before entering McGregor’s garden.  However, one day while chasing Peter, Mr. McGregor has a heart attack and dies.  The animals in the woods go wild and take over Mr. McGregor’s yard and home.  In London, Tom McGregor got bad news.  His great uncle died.  But Tom is more concerned about a promotion than an uncle never knew.  However, when he is turned down for a promotion he deserved due to nepotism.  He goes ballistic and loses his job.  His former boss tells him to go to his Uncle’s home (he just inherited) and relax.  Tom comes to the McGregor Manor to find it overrun with animals.  He wants to be rid of all of them.  His new neighbor Bea attempts to sway him to allow the animals to roam free.  He agrees in front of her but goes after Peter and his friends.  Meanwhile, when Peter sees that Bea is falling for Tom, he decides to put an end to Tom and his deceitful ways.

Based on Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, this is an imaginative and funny take on a classic children’s story (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It quickly gets your attention with classic “Disney”-style singing birds who are consistently interrupted.  Providing a great running gag while allowing the film to separate themselves from other live action movies.  There are plenty of jokes for children and adults alike.  However, please be advised that the movie shows Daddy Rabbit getting caught and then a warm pie coming out of the oven.  If your children can handle this 5-second scene, then bring them.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Why don’t you pick on someone your own size – Peter Rabbit

After meeting in a bar’s quiz competition, team captains Annie and Max fall in love and get married.  Annie is ready to start a family but learns that Max will have a hard time conceiving.  She knows that Max is competitive and his brother Brooks’s success, good looks, and overall dominance must be messing with his mojo.  And with Brooks coming into town, Annie worries Max’s issues will only get worse.  Annie and Max host a weekly game night with their friends Kevin, Michelle, and Ryan.  Kevin and Michelle, now married, have been dating since high school.  And Ryan brings a new girl each week.  After Brooks embarrasses Max again during the game night, he offers to host one of his own.  Max and Annie decide to go just to destroy Brooks at his own game and get his mojo back.  Brooks decides to bring game night up a notch by hiring actors to kidnap him and leave clues for them to find him.  The first one to find him will win his car, a Porshe Spyder (Max’s dream car).  An FBI detective comes in and gives them dossiers with their first clues, then 2 men come in, beat up Brooks, and take him.  The 3 couples continue eating and reading their clues.  But they don’t know that the FBI agent was fake, but the kidnappers are real.  In the end, bullets will fly, blood will be everywhere, and the truth will come out.

How can you not laugh?  This movie was funny from beginning to end.  With a creepy neighbor, Denzel Washington, and a bloody dog, it has everything.  It will keep you wondering what is real and what is fake.  The writers that brought you Horrible Bosses, wins with this funny take on Game Night (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You will laugh so hard, you will miss other jokes.  So don’t be surprised if you want to watch this movie again.  Game Night has no lulls, it gets going from beginning to end.  And what makes it funnier is the couples say what others only think.  See this one with friends and have a good laugh.

Anastasia is trying to settle into her life as Mrs. Grey. As she learns about managing a home from Gail, understanding the vastness of her husband’s amassed fortune, and claim her identity at SIP, her head is spinning. She is put at ease with Christian’s expertise in BDSM.  When her past with he ex-boss Jack Hyde comes back into her life, she and Christian are in a state of constant fear.  Christian’s fears hold greater depth than Ana because he is lying to her about the extent of Jack’s depravity. He hopes to keep her safe from Jack’s accusations and violence. However, when this franchise come to its final climax, Jack won’t be the only intruder in the Grey’s life.

Based on Fifty Shades Freed by E.L. James, this movie is the final installment of the successful franchise (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  While it does fall in line with the book, some parts are taken out for the sake of running time.  But rest assured the overall story is still there including the most memorable parts of the book.  With a short running time, it does feel a bit rushed.  One moment they are newlyweds and 30 minutes later, Christian comes home drunk after hearing Ana’s big news.  Fans of the book will not be disappointed, it is the best of the 3.  Also, it’s a great commercial ad for Audi.  And stay past the 1st set of end credits.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Umm, purple – Ana

We’ve never heard him sing before – Mia

We’ve heard enough bro – Elliot

Plans. Big plans. And Elliot loves looking at her big plans – Kate

In 1971, The Panther 21 were released from prison. One of those 21 was Afeni Shukar. She was not only outspoken but she was 7 months pregnant. Later, Afeni and her two children, Tupac and Sekyiwa, were being watched by the FBI. They were following because the FBI was searching for Tupac’s stepfather Mutulu. After being raided, Afeni decides to move to Baltimore. Although Tupac and Sekyiwa dread the movie, Tupac will find his love and passion for lyrical wordplay and prose at the Baltimore School of the Arts. And while Tupac is getting lead roles, he develops a friendship with Jada Pinkett. With everything developing, Afeni decides she wants the kids to move to Oakland. Tupac learns that violence is everywhere but Oakland’s crimes are out in the open. In Oakland, Tupac connects with Leila, who gets him an audition with Shock G of Digital Underground. With a few bars, Tupac is on the road living the life. With his first deal signed, Tupac is on his way to becoming an icon.

Wow. Just Wow. Demetrius Shipp Jr. embodies Tupac not only in looks but in voice and mannerisms. Props and wardrobe studied Tupac’s style to get the look and tech right for each time period. During each time period, the composer and director made sure each song was right for the scene. Not just Tupac’s music but the top songs of that time. Also, this movie makes a great transition. The first half is Tupac narrating by way of interview. The second half occurs after he bailed out. It is impossible to view this movie without a feeling of dread. It’s a countdown to his life. This movie followed his movie career along with his acting career. You will learn several things about Tupac. And while it painted Tupac as a kind, intelligent, compassionate man; they didn’t polish him up to make him seem perfect. It’s those flaws that lead him down the wrong path. His biggest flaw was being loyal to a fault. However, missing this movie is a flaw.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

Please don’t do anything stupid – Sekyiwa

I’m gonna be revolutionary – Tupac

The only thing that we can leave is our culture and our music – Tupac

You should really try harder – Kidada Jones

Freedom ain’t free – Afeni

You ain’t even in California and you are already gone soft on me – Jada

“Your cells are going to help a lot of people and you will be immortal” is the quote a given to the media by a doctor who performed a biopsy on Henrietta Lacks after she died. The harvested her cells and realized they could grow outside the human body. These cells have been used for research in polio, HPV, AIDS, in vitro fertilization, and more. Even today HeLa (after Henrietta Lacks) cells are being used for medical experiments. But nothing was known about Henrietta’s contributions to the world, outside the medical community, before Rebecca Skloot decided to write about her. This movie is about the making of the book. After seeing her doctors treat her father unethically, Rebecca learns about Henrietta and becomes fascinated by the women who helped the world. Rebecca has to overcome doctor’s, publishers, and a patriarchal family system before she could put words on paper. She finally got a chance to meet with Henrietta’s children and hear their stories about their mistrust of John Hopkins, further experimentation of the family, and how they came to know of their mother’s importance. But she and Henrietta’s youngest daughter Debra want to know more about her mother. Rebecca is willing to oblige and take Debra, but she doesn’t understand that Debra’s mistrust of people and the abuse she has suffered will make working with her difficult. As Rebecca and Debra learn about Henrietta, HeLa, and the family’s history, Debra starts to breakdown. What will it take to make Henrietta as famous as her cells? And what toll will it take on Debra?

Based on the biography, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, is a well acted, written, and directed piece of film (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). It’s hard to believe this movie went straight to HBO. It is remarkably shot to show the countryside of Clover and its contrast, the city of Baltimore. The actor’s passion is seen in each shot to get the family’s essence and perspective just right. Watching this movie and how the family was treated will make you angry and feel hurt, but use this as a teaching tool to understand why some don’t trust doctors or hospitals. And just when you believe the family has been taken advantage off enough, you learn about their past. And it’s not pretty or healthy. But as proof that the strength of the HeLa cells runs through this family. Don’t miss this film.  Warning, you may need tissues for the last 15 minutes of this film.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

The Other Mother – Review

The Other Mother – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Other Mother

Jackie is thrown for a loop when her daughter Taylor comes home from Paris with her new stepmom Tiffany. Jackie’s ex-husband Mitch, tells her Jackie that the marriage was spur of the moment. Jackie seems ok until Tiffany starts undermining her parenting of Brooke. Tiffany is telling Brooke to quit classes, flirt, and drive without a license. Jackie’s relationship with her daughter has eroded so much that she wants to live with her father. While Jackie’s life is falling apart, Tiffany and Brooke are getting closer. But when Brook’s best friend Taylor dies, 2 words written on her hand will expose Tiffany.

This movie may not require your full attention, but it’s a decent movie with a twist ending. And Lifetimers hang in there, she will be killing in no time. And once the bodies start dropping, this movie picks up the pace. While it is a fun, this movie has been done before. While its premise is good, it’s been done before with a close family friend, relative, or coworker. Even the history of Tiffany is not new. It’s just a common story. This is a movie to DVR and view when you have time.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

The Lost Souls Cafe – Review

The Lost Souls Cafe – TVOne – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Lost Souls Cafe

At the height of soul music, Geneva had 2 hit songs. However, she had enough foresight to see that her singing days wouldn’t last forever. So she saved every bit of money she could and bought a bar. She named it Lost’s Souls Cafe. She employees her nephew Taylor (accountant), Ray (bartender), Stevie (waitress), and Briana (new waitress). Even though Geneva is on vacation, things are running smoothly with Taylor in charge. Until one night when Ray and Stevie are calmly confronted by a stranger. The stranger is looking for Taylor and will do anything to get him. The stranger never gives his name, just his brand of cigar. Taylor, on the outside, looks well put together, but in reality, he is falling apart. He is pocketing money from the Lost’s Souls Cafe for his addiction. Soon Geneva is getting a bill from the IRS. She has 30 days to pay her $100,000 tax bill or she will lose her club. Geneva is so disappointed Taylor, she cuts him out of the family business and takes away his responsibilities. But just when Geneva thinks this is the worse that can happen, an abuse victim, a drug addict, and a phone call will put Geneva on an emotional roller coaster. Only time will tell if Geneva will keep her club and who got murdered.

This is a play-to-film movie with a lot of subject matter. Domestic Violence, Drug Addiction, Gambling Addiction, Cancer, Co-parenting, Theft, and Forgiveness. With 3 original songs, 2 performed by Loretta Devine, it’s easy to forget you are watching a play without a laugh track. It does seem as if some things were cut out of the play to fit the movie into a 2-hour time slot. This movie is a great starting point to see the play in its entirety on stage. While the storyline is steady and the acting is great, the ending is anti-climatic and flat. DVR and watch when you have time with friends.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Of course, I’ll come in tomorrow – Stevie

I don’t repeat myself – Bryson

I already died – Briana

Not as much as I hate you coming here – Taylor

Remember I know all about the little problem you have – Pam

Drop a dime of my money in your pocket and I’m taking 50 cents out of your ass – Geneva

You said don’t come in here when you open, but you closed – Delphine

Running Away – Review

Running Away – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Running Away

Peggy believes Richard is the perfect fit for her family. After losing the father of her 2 girls, Maggie and Lizzie, she hasn’t dated in 10 years. She is going through financial hardships and Richard is more than willing to give a helping hand. When Richard proposes, Peggy is ecstatic, her girls, however … not so much. They want to think their mom can do better. Later, all 3 move into Richard’s home and change schools. Lizzie is happy that he has a pool. Maggie still hasn’t warmed up to him. As Peggy and Lizzie settle, Maggie starts to rebel by drinking and partying. Richard keeps her secret but for a price. This price only amps up her rebellion. She starts cutting, fighting, and stealing. Seeing the changes in her, her new Chip offers to help her in any way he can. She asks for one thing: help to run away.

This is a sad tale of a little girl lost. It accurately portraits the grooming process and possessiveness of men like Richard. Also, it gives viewers insight into victimology of girls like Maggie. This movie is hard to watch but necessary. While Peggy is finding happiness by providing a better life for her children. Maggie is trying to let her mother be happy while sacrificing herself. While Richard is a tough character to handle, his opposite Chip is a breath of fresh air. He is the good guy Maggie needs. It’s great that the writers made her friend a male instead of a female. This gives Maggie one good male in her life. The writing and acting were superb in this movie. It should have been 30 minutes longer to flush out biological father’s character along with the missing girl. Sit back and enjoy this one. Maybe even with your teen to start a conversation.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Whoa, now that’s not supposed to happen – Richard

Yeah that will sink faster than the Titanic – Peggy

No, she’s not. She’s trying to be happy – Lizzie

Do you mind if I just skip the movie night – Maggie

Woman on the Run – Review

Woman on the Run – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Woman on the Run

After moving to Seattle, Nomi has stayed a hermit while writing her book. Her only contact is her husband (Mark), her children (Jane and Aiden), her mentor (Teddy), and her nanny (Greta). However, when she finally put “The End” on her book, she is ready to be a full-time mother. She goes to a hotel with the family for her husband’s conference when she realizes there is not milk or food for the baby. After getting the items, she heads back to the hotel but is attacked. She wakes up the next morning inside a car filling up with carbon dioxide. She gets out of the car and sees two disturbing things. A tube connecting the tailpipe to the window and a rental agreement with Greta’s name on it. She heads back to the hotel only to find that everyone is calling her Greta. She confronts her husband but Mark says she is the nanny Greta, whom they fired because she attacked his wife. Now Greta has taken her place in her family and in her life. But she doesn’t know why they are doing it. Nomi is determined to get her children and her identity. It will take a bell hop, Jane, and a stun gun to get the job done.

This is a slow build to a fun ride. Although it is slow, you must pay attention to all the small details. It’s hard to imagine someone taking over your life and getting help doing it. But it can happen. There is one scene (and it won’t be mentioned here, watch the movie) that will have your heart in our throat. You will fear and feel for Nomi. Her only concern is the lives of her children. She only contemplates the failed state of her marriage for a few moments, then it’s back to Mother Lion. This is definitely one to watch.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Who wouldn’t like her? she’s so, so, blonde – Nomi

Yes, hell has officially frozen over – Mark

The longest 24 hours of my life – Greta

Like Cats and Dogs – Review

Like Cats and Dogs – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Like Cats and Dogs

Lara decided to get away from work and rent a house to spend time with her best friend Rose. And she is traveling with her dog, Frank. Spencer wants to get away from distractions so he can write his dissertation for his Ph.D. Spencer is traveling with his cat, Mozart. Also, he gets calls from his girlfriend Susan every day asking about his dissertation’s progress. Once Spencer and Lara arrive at their rented homes, there is only one problem. The other one is there. Both Spenser and Laura thought they would have the house to themselves but the proprietor Ellen made a mistake and double booked the house. Spencer calls around to other hotels but none accept pets. They decide to stick it out and live together. But with Laura’s easy going, fly by the pants nature, she soon clashes with the overscheduled and particular Spencer. To make the living situation easier, Spencer creates a treaty that sets rules for volume, pets, towels, and bathroom time. Laura has had enough and leaves but after talking to friends she decides to drive him out. While away the two miss each other and become attracted. But they both have problems. Lara is afraid of commitment and Spencer has a girlfriend. Can these two make it work?

This movie follows the Hallmark plan.

  1. Two people don’t like each other
  2. Two people have to co-exist and don’t like it
  3. They slowly become attracted
  4. They have a reason they can’t be together
  5. They fall in love with a declaration

It’s the same movie with a different title and inanimate object. They need to do more to spice things up. Since you know how this movie will end, you pay little to no attention to the characters. This is a shame because they are very likable. The actors appeared to really embody their characters in walking, talking, and mannerism. However, this is overshadowed by a script done one too many times. Hallmark needs to bring more to the table than the same story. This movie is background noise. DVR it and watch when you need a distraction. The actors saved this movie.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

Can’t you just download it – Lara

Good idea. Wait! What? – Spencer

In Egypt, a powerful mutant, En Sabah Nur, is treated like a god. But while in the process of transferring his consciousness into the body of another mutant, his plans are thwarted by nonbelievers. As En Sabah Nur’s temple is being destroyed, one of his followers protect and entombed him. In 1983, En Sabah Nur is accidentally unearth and gathers 4 horsemen (Storm, Magneto, Psylocke, and Angel) to bring forth the Apocalypse; because the weak humans have taken over the earth while mutants have to hide. On the other side of the world, Jean Grey can tap into En Sabah Nur desires and knows the end of the world is coming. With help of Mystic, Xavier believes Jean and decided to find Magneto and urge him not to help En Sabah Nur. But Magneto’s pain runs deeper than anyone can imagine, and destruction means peace. Soon En Sabah Nur causes the world to make itself defenseless and spreads destruction throughout the earth. Only a few hear the call to save the world. But … can it be done.

Quicksilver steals the show!!! His scenes are worth the price of admission  You will want to see them over and over again. New comer Alexander Shipp does a great job showing the growth on Storm and pulling off a semi-decent African accent. This movie doesn’t feel like a 2 and 1/2 hour movie because its not bogged down with nonsense. 3D is not needed for this movie but you do need to see the 1st two (X-Men:First Class and X-Men:Days of Future Past). movies (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  This movie cannot stand alone.  Some of the graphics do get cartoon-ish and some jokes fall flat. Stay past the end crawl for a look into the future. Its not the best in the series but its pretty good and worth the trip.  Thanks to Quicksilver.

I give this 4 out of 5 stars

Mac and Kelly get great news, they are going to have a second child. So, they decided to sell their home and buy a bigger one. They find buyers but learn they are in escrow. However, their new home is not in escrow because they wanted their realtor “to do whatever it took to buy it”. So, as long as their buyers don’t have any concerns and back out in 30 days, their home will be sold. Otherwise, Mac and Kelly will have 2 mortgages and 2 children. On the other side of town, Shelby, a freshman, learns that only fraternities can throw parties on campus. She attends the party but hates that they are disgusting and sexist. She gets together with Beth and Nora and decides to start a sorority off campus and have the parties they want to attend. Step one in their plan is get a house. At first the girls don’t know how they can pull it off, but they get help from an unlikely house mother, Teddy. Teddy is still bitter that he has a police record, which is keeping him from getting a good job and he blames Mac and Kelly. So he works with the girls to get a house for their sorority, Kappa Nu. Guess where they decided to move. That’s right. Next to Mac and Kelly. Remember the 30 day escrow? Mac and Kelly beg the girls to keep it down just for 30 days but when the girls don’t listen, the Neighbor Wars start again. Who will be the last house standing?

Although the exposition is the same, this is a different movie. However, you will need to see the first movie, Neighbors, to understand Teddy’s need for revenge, airbag jokes, and “Bros before Hoes” (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). This movie isn’t better than the first … it’s not worst than the first. It’s just as good. The fans of the first movie will not be disappointed. It is definitely a matinee movie when you need a good, easy laugh. These girls are sugar and spice and nothing nice … they really give the frat boys, in part 1, a run for their money.

I give this 3.5 out of 5 stars
