Girl in the Bunker – Review

Girl in the Bunker – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Girl in the Bunker

Elizabeth Shoaf was a happy, loving older sister that took care of her brother after school.  So when she didn’t come home one day, her mother got a sick feeling.  At that moment, Mrs. Shoaf had no idea Elizabeth was in trouble.   Elizabeth decided to walk the quarter mile home instead of getting into a cramped car.  On the way home, Elizabeth was approached by a man impersonating a police officer.  He told Elizabeth she was being arrested for marijuana plants behind her house.  Then he put a device around her neck and told her it was a bomb in case she ran.  After they walked past her home and deeper in the woods, the man told her the truth.  His name was Vinson and he was kidnapping her.  He created an underground bunker with explosive devices and booby traps all around it.  If she tried to escape, he would kill her.  Elizabeth will be tortured, raped, and beaten over a period of 10 days with only her wits to help her.

Like I Am Elizabeth Smart and Girl in the Box, it’s easy to blame the victim.  But you should only villanize one person in this movie, Vinson.  He is the sick person that kidnapped Elizabeth because she was the easiest target.  She was alone and trusted authority.  You will quickly get angry at all the police missteps and Vinson’s accomplices.  As Elizabeth is trapped in the bunker, she never loses hope or strength.  She uses her brain to gain compassion and leave clues to outsmart her kidnapper.  This based on a true story movie did not have to happen, but this movie and Elizabeth’s ordeal can be a teaching tool for your children. Watch it with them and teach them how to stay safe.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

If that’s the attitude your gonna have maybe don’t bother coming home – Mrs. Shoaf

You need to calm down and accept the situation here – Vinson

Hailey Dean Mysteries: 2 + 2 = Murder – Review

Hailey Dean Mysteries: 2 + 2 = Murder – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Hailey Dean Mysteries: 2 + 2 = Murder

Naomi just got a big promotion and ran a successful fundraiser to save her school.  So everyone is shocked when she emails her boss stating she turning down the job and not coming back.  Everyone including Hailey.  However, when Hailey’s niece Parker tells her aunt that Naomi wanted to talk to her at the fundraiser because Hailey once worked for the DA, Hailey starts to investigate.  Hailey Dean considers Naomi to be missing until she finds Naomi’s jewelry with blood.  Now, the police believe this missing person case is a murder investigation.  Hailey is determined to uncover the truth no matter who it hurts or who is hurt.

In true Hailey form, she is a step ahead of everyone.  But once again, she puts herself in harm’s way and almost gives Fincher a heart attack.  With this crime, Fincher and Hailey solidify their unique and strong friendship over a taco truck.  All the while, Hailey is dealing with a friend of her late boyfriend.  This is the first movie in a 3-part movie series, so a lot is left open-ended.  Instead of getting a list of possible suspects with an unlikeable victim, you adore the victim and there are no real suspects.  It’s not until the end that you get the final and only criminal.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Fincher, if you were missing, wouldn’t you want me to come looking for you -Hailey

Marrying Mr. Darcy – Review

Marrying Mr. Darcy – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Marrying Mr. Darcy

Elizabeth is floored when her boyfriend Donovan Darcy ask for her hand in marriage. She is excited to plan a small, outdoor wedding with all their close family and friends. She even decides to forgive Donovan’s Aunt Violet and ask her to attend the wedding. Donovan loves this idea, but Elizabeth regrets it instantly. Violet takes over the venue, date, guest list, food, flower, and even her dress. Soon Elizabeth doesn’t recognize herself or her wedding. She holds her tongue and keeps going until Violet tells her she will need to quit her job to be Mrs. Darcy. Newly hired Elizabeth panics and wonders if she is marrying her loving fiance Donovan or his job as Mr. Darcy.

This is the first Hallmark movie that will make you angry. As Violet takes over with “more suitable suggestions”, you will get frustrated.  But not only at Aunt Violet, but at Elizabeth’s lack of strength.  She just refuses to stand up for herself.  And it affects her engagement to Donovan.  While is infuriating to watch, it is a compromise some women and men make to appease their families.  Now like all Hallmark movies, this comes to a promising end, but with this promise comes the ultimate compromise.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

And they say wedding planning is hard – Elizabeth

You really have to thank Elizabeth for me being here. “Family” is really important to her – Donovan

So, I’m not our best friend – Brandon

Nightclub Secrets – Review

Nightclub Secrets – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Nightclub Secrets

Zoe Harrington happily teaches creative writing to her students and loves reading the classics.  However, her secret passion is for crime novels.  But when her sister Rachel commits suicide, she accepts the police findings.  Even when her alcoholic mother says otherwise,  Zoe believes her sister was unhappy.  However, when Zoe starts reading her sister’s journal and Rachel’s friend dies, Zoe decides to investigate.  Zoe believes the best place to start is Rachel’s job at a nightclub.  There, Rachel was a bottle girl who sold expensive bottles of alcohol for a 20% cut.  At first, Zoe is ignored but when she uses her sister tips written in the journal, she gets the job.  Soon, she is the #1 bottle girl and #1 target.

Talk about a slow burn. This movie sizzles for an hour and a half about the mystery of Rachel suicide, then it really gets going with a big reveal. This reveal will expose multiple crime syndicates going on in the nightclub. Although the perpetrator is exposed early in the movie, the motives and accomplices are not. So stick with this movie for a surprising and strong ending.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Still obsessed with books I see – Rachel

This is what she does. She uses people – Zoe

Under the Bed – Review

Under the Bed – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Under the Bed

For the next week, Callie has decided to work from home to get over being cheated on by her fiance, Brad, and left with a mountain of bills. She wants to just work and watch her mom, Sandra’s, dog. When she is home she starts getting IMs from “Nobudy”. She not sure who he/she is but they continue to chat. However, what you know, that Callie doesn’t know, is that she is being stalked in her own home by “Nobudy”. The stalker used her social media sites to collected information; and then started living in her home unbeknownst to Callie. The stalker is using her toothbrush, eating her food, and setting up video cameras. How long will it take for Callie to realize she is not alone?

This movie will make your jaw drop. It has a slow build, but that is to give you a sense of panic as you watch the stalker move throughout Callie’s home. He is carrying a camera, so you see his every move. Watching this movie will have you thinking twice about the amount of social media you have, how many social media accounts are linked, and what you put on social media. Under the Bed exposes how cyber stalking can quickly transform and hurt you in real life. The bad side to this movie is when Callie apologizes for her ex’s cheating and her horror movie escape attempts. You find yourself getting annoy with a character you wanted to survive. Overall, this movie is enjoyable with a high body count and will make you spit out your wine.  And believe there will be a part two.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

I got to hand it to the guy. He is persistent – Ronnie

I must be losing it – Callie

Love on Ice – Review

Love on Ice – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Love on Ice

Spencer comes into a small town to train a young, promising skater named Nikki, when he runs into Emily. Emily is a skater turned part-time coach and waitress, who hasn’t skated competitively for 8 years. She was coaching Nikki but knows that it is time for Nikki to move on. Spencer is in awe of Emily and wonders what she has been up to. Emily avoids the question to focus on Nikki. During Nikki’s 1st practice, Mia (Nikki’s mother) proves to be a true stage mother. Spencer is at his wits end when he ask Emily to co-coach and be a buffer between Mia and him. She is happy to oblige. Both coaches know that Nikki can win at regionals, but Spenser has another idea. He wants to see Emily compete again. He knows that Emily has what it takes; and he wants to coach Emily in secret while coaching Nikki. Of course it is only a matter of time before tea is spilled and everyone notices the attraction but them.. Spencer and Emily are in love. But how will Nikki and Mia take the news.

This is another Hallmark story where love is the subplot. Its interesting to see the town knows they are in love but they have no clue. But even with the love story, this is a movie more about encouragement, building a supportive team, and just having fun. The end is satisfying and fair. Also, there is one love story that comes out of the blue, but it was quickly explained. This movie is good, not great but good. Watch this on your DVR

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Boyfriend Killer – Review

Boyfriend Killer – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Boyfriend Killer

Sandra just got the worst news of her life … her son, Preston died on the motorcycle she bought him. She calls his father, Charles, and her sister, Carrie, to help her gather Preston’s belongings from his apartment. When Carrie and Sandra arrive at the apartment they are shocked to find a Krystal there. Sandra introduces Krystal as Preston’s ex, but she is quickly corrected. Krystal says they were a couple and living together. Sandra and Carrie are flabbergasted by the news, especially since Preston barely mentioned her. With emails, social media, and phone records, Preston’s family believes Krystal is lying about their relationship. But why? And when Krystal makes a shocking funeral confession, the family is set to find out the truth behind Krystal.

This is a great movie with a decent body count. Krystal is very cunning and Sandra, Carrie, and Charles is not completely clueless to Krystal’s ways. It takes a while for them to put the pieces together, but when they do, the truth is better than you think. This movie feels like a few episodes of Deadly Women mixed together. The wardrobe is the best ever seen on Lifetime. The mother dresses like a mom but not an old maid; and Krystal has outfits for which you would want to kill (pun intended). The on going trouble between the parents was not completely necessary, but decent filler. Get a nice mug of cocoa, put the kids to bed, and watch.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Just do it please. Sis, please – Sandra

And what about my things – Crystal

Krystal, you’re being pathetic. Go home – Jack

Yeah, why did he break up with her – Carrie

The Twin – Review

The Twin – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Twin

On Ashley’s birthday, she gets surprise visits from Jake (her neighbor), Joseline (her daughter), and Tyler (her daughter’s new boyfriend).  While visiting, Ashley learns her daughter and new boyfriend are learning Japanese for a school trip.  Ashley can’t hide her shock, but warns her daughter about moving too fast into this relationship.  Since Joseline’s father left when she was 10, Ashley worries Joseline is trying to fill the void.   Ashley tries to give Tyler the benefit of the doubt by learning more about him.  She learns his family died in a car crash just a year ago.  However, Tyler is hiding that Derrick (his twin brother) is still alive and caused the accident that killed their parents.  Tyler visits Derrick often to keep him updated on his life and check up on him; but Derrick attacks Tyler and switches clothes.  Derrick quickly leaves and heads straight to Ashley’s house.  While Tyler is doing everything he can to prove he is not his brother.  Tyler must convince doctors and nurses of who he is, find his brother, and save his girl.

This movie is 1 hour of slow build, 30 minutes of “finally” moments, and 30 minutes of excitement.  It’s possible to skip the 1st hour and still be able to understand the movie.  They did provide a nice stand-in for the twin, but the dual scenes could use a little more work.   Timothy’s performance of both Tyler and Derrick was done very well.  He made sure each twin had a different personality and mannerism.  So DVR this movie and watch when you have time to kill.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

No kidding – Ashley

I like maybe – Jake

Garage Sale Mystery: Art of Murder – Review

Garage Sale Mystery: Art of Murder – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Garage Sale Mystery: Art of Murder

Jen is asked by her daughter’s sorority to host a garage sale for charity.  She says yes and enlist the other moms to donate items.  After dispatching the “Mom Soldiers”, Sidney goes missing.  Jen goes to Elizabeth’s (Sidney’s mom) attic and discovers Sidney’s body.  Sidney’s death is determined to be an accident.  However, Jen learns that Sidney was a dancer, so she would have braced herself for a fall.  Also she had a cell phone in her with a “9” pressed.  She believes Sidney was murdered.  She just needs everyone else to believe it; and find the killer.

This movie is a good story … not great but good. It slows down a lot in the middle but picks up at the end. So have something to do when it slows down or you may get bored. The acting is great and keeps you interested but the crime is like Castle, Psych, or even Law and Order. Its been done and you will figure it out before the end.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Yeah I’m getting to old to do my own stunts – Jen

Ask for a raise – Andrew

I’m a police detective and I don’t stumble across as many dead bodies as you. Remind me not to get on your bad side – Det. Lenwood

#UnwantedGuest – Review

Unwanted Guest – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Unwanted Guest

Christine and Amy want to get away from campus after Christine’s ex-boyfriend, Allan, dies. Christine offers to let Amy stay with her family, after she learns that Amy has no where to stay during winter break. Charles and Anna, Christine’s step-dad and mom, are surprised by the guest but welcome her. Amy is the perfect house guest. She cooks, cleans, and takes care of Christine when she is becomes ill. But of course, this is Lifetime, no one is that nice without a motive. Christine health gets worse, Mom has a terrible fall, the hamster is missing, and brake lines fail. While the family determines the source of the bad luck, Allan’s death is being investigate. Not as a accident, but as a murder. Sit back and watch the crazy unfold.

If you like a quick body count and clever villain (while screaming at everyone else in the movie for being dumb), this is the movie for you. Amy doesn’t do much to turn this family on it’s side; and that’s what makes if fun to watch. Amy’s character is very intelligent but relies on redirecting phone calls and miscommunication to get what she wants. Proving its the small thing that can do the most damage. This compelling story is weakened by its lack luster ending to explain why it happened. There was so much build up with little follow up. If you watch this movie, missing a minute will leave you lost. So give this movie your full attention. However, don’t crack open wine or change plans. DVR and get some take out.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Now go pack your bag. We are getting out of this morgue first thing in the morning – Christine

Trust me, Kristine. I get it. I know what it’s like to be in the way of other people’s lives – Amy
