Ant-Man and the Wasp – Budget of $130 million – 1 hour and 58 minutes

After Scott survived the Quantum Realm, Dr. Hank Pym and Hope believe Janet (his wife and her mother respectively) could still be alive.  If so, they hope to bring her back.  Over the past 2 years, they have been working on the Quantum Tunnel.  They will use the tunnel to go subatomic and bring Janet back from the Quantum Realm.  Of course, they decide to test the machine just to work out any issues.  On house arrest, Scott has a dream about Janet playing hide and seek with a little girl.  While he is not supposed to contact Janet nor Hank while on house arrest, he can’t help but leave a message about his dream.  When Hope and Hank hear about Scott’s dream, they know their machine works and Janet is alive.  Now they are on a mission for one final artifact to ensure Janet’s safe return.  Hope goes undercover with a black tech dealer named Sonny Burch.  But men on Sonny’s payroll discovered Hope’s true identity.  Now, Sonny wants Pym tech in exchange for the artifact.  When Hope says no, he takes the artifact and her money.  During the battle against Sonny’s men, Hope (as Wasp) gets help from Scott (as Ant-Man) to stop Sonny.  Just when they believe they have the battle under control, they are stopped by Ghost.  Ghost can walk through any object and has superhuman strength.  And to make matters worse, she has stolen the lab with the Quantum Tunnel inside.  The shrunken lab.  Now Scott, Hope, and Hank must defeat Ghost, get the lab back, go to the Quantum Realm, and save Janet while stopping Sonny from stealing their tech.   And they must do this without Scott losing his probation.  Or he will get 20 years in jail, minimum.

This film proves Marvel has mastered special effects (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It is dizzying and funny to see Scott go from tiny to huge to normal to medium and back.  Also, a lot of real-world items were used in the fight scenes to make them more lifelike.  Unlike most Marvel movies, Ant-Man and the Wasp has a villain and an anti-villain.   Sonny is just a bad guy doing things for profit.  While Ghost’s story is more complex and has more heart.   You understand why Ghost is willing to sacrifice Janet’s life to save themselves.  With Avengers: Infinity War taking a darker turn, this movie provides the laughs and thrills to lighten the mood.  But don’t worry, it makes the connection between itself as a separate movie, the first Ant-Man, and Infinity Wars.  You get a recap scene voiced by Luis similar to the first movie.  You get a new storyline to separate itself from the other movies.  And you get a recap of what led to Scott’s house arrest.  Because of the recap, it’s not necessary to see Ant-Man.  But you should watch Captain American: Civil War and Avengers: Infinity War before seeing this film.  While this is a great Dolby or Imax film, 3D is not necessary.  And say past the end credits for a shock and a question.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

I still think about the night your mom and I had to leave you – Hank

Do you guys just put ‘quantum’ in front of everything – Scott

Did you guys get crushed by the building – Luis

It’s a pleasure doing business with you – Sonny

What do you want to be when you grow up – Hope

Thor has been working to stop the prophecy of the Asgard’s demise called Ragnarok.  However, when he gets home, he learns that the 9 realms are falling apart.  Thor knows his father would never let that happen, so he confronts him and exposes that it is Loki.  Thor demands to be taken to their father.  Oden lets his sons know that Hela is on her way.  She is the Goddess of Death, bent on revenge, and their sister.  As the oldest, Hela feels she is the rightful heir to the throne.  She despises Oden for changing his way and locking her away.  While absorbing the news of a new found sister, Thor and Loki stand before her.  During the fight, Loki calls for Heimdall.  But all three are swept up in the Bitfröst Bridge while still fighting.  Hela throws Loki and Thor out; she heads to Asgard to rule while the brothers land on the planet Sakaar.  Hela sets her sights on taking over all the realms and by destroying everything in her path.  Her only obstacle: someone stole the Bitfröst Sword.  She must find it to continue her domination.

Thor, without his hammer, is confronted by Sakaar locals.  But soon Scrapper 142 finds him and marks him as a contender.  Thor is set to be in the Grand Master’s game and face the Grand Master’s Champion.  Thor worries that without his hammer, he will fail.  But he will learn the truth about Scrapper 142, the Grand Master’s Champion, Loki’s whereabouts, Hela’s power, Ragnarok, and what it truly means to be the God of Thunder.

Be prepared to laugh and be in awe.  When there isn’t a physical battle, you are given a verbal battle.  Sakaar is given its own color palette which completely separates it from Asgard.  New characters are introduced with clear and concise backstories which allows them to shine with their own personalities.  Since this movie is one of the funniest in the Marvel series, the humor causes the special effects to be more cartoonish than realistic.  So, the Hulk looks like a cartoon next to a real object.  At times it just doesn’t blend.  Don’t worry, you will get the joy of cameos from Stan Lee and Dr. Strange.  As well as post end credit scenes.  So see this movie at full price and IMAX, before someone tells to much.  3D is not necessary

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Please don’t cut my hair – Thor

World famous detective Hercule Poirot just finished a case at The Wailing Wall and wants to take a vacation.  Just as he is planning to relax, he gets a new case from London and must return.  Poirot’s friend Bouc (director of the Orient Express) offers him a ride on the full train.  During a dessert service, Poirot is approached by Samuell Ratchett.  Ratchett has received several death threats and wants to hire Poirot as his bodyguard.  During the night, Poirot sees someone running in a red robe and hears noises coming from Ratchett’s room.  The butler knocks on the door, hears “It’s nothing”, and walks away.  Poirot goes to his room and sleeps.  Later an avalanche, the train derails and leaves them all stranded together.  The butler knocks on everyone’s door but when Ratchett doesn’t answer, Poirot opened the door.  Inside Ratchett is dead with 12 stab wounds to the chest.  Poirot finds a partially destroyed note, a bloody handkerchief with the letter “H” on it, and a cup of barbital drugged coffee.  Poirot must discover the killer before the train is back on the tracks.

Based on the novel Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, this movie has to be watched twice (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  There is so much going on with so many characters, it’s hard to keep up.  While telling a grim tale, it does provide a few laughs at the human condition.  You feel an urge to solve the mystery along with Poirot.  This movie allows you to come up with your own theories as Poirot questions each suspect.  But be warned this movie DOES follow the book; no new suspects, plots, or murders are given.  The director, Kenneth Branagh, must be applauded for his use of continuous shots as Poirot enters and leaves the train.  Also, some scenes are shot from above, allowing the audience to be a fly on the wall or ceiling.  Seeing the behind the scene and the director’s commentary on this movie will be amazing.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Order me the fish – Princess Dragomiroff

Vice is where the devil finds his darling – Pilar Estravados

Brad and Dusty are making the co-dad relationship work.  But they are dealing with co-parenting issues like kids leaving things at one parent’s house, parents buying the same gift, and separate Christmases.  However when Megan stands up in front of her entire school and says she hates separate Christmases, Brad and Dusty decide to have one Christmas together.  Then, the phone rings.  Kurt, Dusty’s father, is coming for Christmas.  Kurt has been unavailable for Dusty’s biggest moments and it’s driven a wedge in their relationship.  Dusty is not happy about his father’s arrival but Brad is ecstatic.  Brad realizes that their fathers will land at the same airport at the same time and he can’t wait to meet Kurt.  Kurt arrives and has nothing but shady comments to give.  Brad’s dad Don arrives with hugs and kisses for everyone.  Kurt believes that all the dads are playing nice and harbor deep resentment.  He will do anything to expose it.  So when Brad and Dusty tell them their plans for a “Together Christmas”, Kurt rents a cabin for both families.  He plans to pick everyone apart.  Starting with Dusty.

The sequel to Daddy’s Home, this movie adds more dads but keeps the same amount of laughs and heart.  Luckily, the story is different.  While the first movie was developing respect among parents and step-parents.  This movie is about harboring emotions among fathers and sons as well as step-parents. If you are seeing this movie for John Cena, please be advised he is only in the last 30 minutes of the film.  Most of the film revolves around the 4 other men.  The subplot is the 4 men giving Dylan dating advice while stopping Adrianna’s influence on Megan.  If you have a child younger than 13, it will get a little awkward during some of the jokes.  The rest are ok.  If you are a fan of the 1st, see this movie at matinee price.  And be ready for a new dad in the picture!

Mitch is on a perfect honeymoon but his girlfriend Katrina points out that they aren’t married.  That’s the moment Mitch pulls out a ring and proposes.  As he goes to get celebration drinks, killers pull up to the shore and shoot anyone in sight.  Mitch tries desperately to save Katrina, he just can’t get to her in time.  Eighteen months later, Mitch has infiltrated a terrorist cell online and gets combat training.  He hopes to find the man who initiated the attack that killed Katrina and kill him.  However, CIA has been watching Mitch’s every move.  When Mitch finally travels to meet the cell, the CIA kills everyone inside but Mitch.  They bring Mitch back to the US to question him.  Irene, the Deputy Director, realizes that Mitch is an asset; and with the right trainer, he can become one of the best CIA operatives.  The trainer Irene has in mind is Stan – Cold War Vet and Navy Seal.  Stan knows Mitch is good but he is too emotional and doesn’t follow orders.  However, Stan decides to give Mitch a chance and trains him.  Training is cut short because 50 kilos of war-grade plutonium was stolen and it’s being turned into a weapon.  This mission will be personal.

Based on American Assassin by Vince Flynn, this movie is nothing new (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  The jokes are average, the action is academic, and the plot is typical.  Even the twist, while leaving it open for a part 2, is predictable.  Now don’t be mistaken, it has some fun, action-packed sequences but they fighting style is standard in movies today.  A saving grace is not having a love interest or “love story” thrown into the film for the sake of attracting female movie-goers.  This makes the “revenge for killing my girlfriend” story a lot more believable.  The best moments of the movie are not the fight scenes but the training senses.  In these scenes, Bruce and Dylan got to play off each other and left a lasting impact in the movie.  If you really want to see it, go to a matinee.  Otherwise, wait it out.  And be warned, the torture scenes hold nothing back.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

In the middle of a quaint piece of land, Mother is renovating “Him’s” house.  She wants to restore it back to the glory he once knew.  Mother’s husband is a poet but he hasn’t been able to write for a while.  She continues to be positive while taking care of the home.  One day “Man” comes to the home with the misperception that the home is a bed & breakfast.  “Him” wants Man to stay because he has no other place to go.  “Him” doesn’t consult Mother on his decision, but she prepares a place for Man to stay.  The next day Woman shows up and lets herself in.  She intrudes on “Him” and “Mother’s” space and their lives.  While “Him” doesn’t mind, Mother wants them out.  Soon, “Him’s” prize jewel is destroyed by Man and Woman.  Instead of getting angry, “Him” boards up the office where the jewel once stood and allows them to stay as long as they want.  The next day Woman and Man’s two sons come to the home.  “Him” allows them in and they start to fight.  The younger brother kills the older brother and runs off.  Before the night is over, “Mother’s” home is swarmed by Man and Woman’s family and friends.  They start to eat the food, break items, and paint the walls.  It’s just too much for Mother to bear.  But “Him” is inspired by the pain and wants everyone to stay.  If “Mother” thought this was bad now, she has no idea what “Him’s” inspired writing will bring to their home.

It’s just weird and disturbing.  This feels like a mix of Tales of the Crypt, Rosemary’s Baby, Groundhog Day, and The Others all in one (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  The audience is given the extreme close-ups of Jennifer Lawerence while being made to feel like one of the intruders with continuous use of shaky cam work.  But knowing the following will help you understand the satire of this film.  First, Mother is Mother Earth.  Second, “Him” is the creator.  Third, Man and Woman are Adam and Eve.  Fourth, the brothers are Cain and Abel.  And finally, their home is a symbol of the Garden of Eden.   At first Man and Woman is enough but when they overstep their bounds everything falls fall apart.  And more people come and bring destruction and war to Mother’s home.  Mother is falling to pieces and we are the enemy.  If you understand these symbols, the movie will make some sense.  Now some scenes are just too much and will make you queasy and/or turn away.  While it comes off as a suspense/thriller movie, this is truly a satire.  This movie is great for a film student but everyone else can wait.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

You don’t love me. You loved how I loved you – Mother

Wizard of Lies – Review

The Wizard of Lies – HBO – 2 hours and 15 minutes

Wizard of Lies

After reporting on the story since the day it hit the news, Diana Henriques got the first in-jail interview with Bernie Madoff.  As they sat, he started his story with the day his sons came into his office and question the bonus check’s release dates.  Normally, it is given in February but Bernie was writing the checks in December.  Bernie stated, “He wanted to make sure everyone was ok.  He wanted to take care of everybody”.  He and his sons, Mark and Andrew, went home and sat down with their mother.  It was then that Bernie told everyone the truth.  The money was gone, the business was a Ponzi scheme, and he lost $50 billion.  Bernie wants to take some time and get things in order before turning himself in.  But after Mark and Andrew speak to a lawyer, they learn that stolen money being distributed is a crime and knowing their father was doing that was a crime.  So, they turned their father in and cut off communication with their mother.  As news of Bernie’s crimes and his victims hit the mainstream news, the family is falling apart and the world is turning against them.  The Madoff family will have to make a personal decision without their lifeguard Bernie to save them.  Once everything is said and done, Bernie only has one question, “Am I a sociopath”.  Well, is he?

Based on the book, The Wizard of Lies: Bernie Madoff and the Death of Trust by Diana  B. Henriques, this movie sets itself apart from the others by focusing on the downfall of the family (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  While another movie focused on the “how he did it”, this one focus on the family’s aftermath.  Ruth starts to question her self-worth because she didn’t know how to do things without assistance, she had no real friends, and she didn’t have a job. Mark became obsessed with the coverage and Andrew tried to get back to normalcy.  Another heart-wrenching angle was the story of Madoff’s victims.  They recounted the moment that learned their money was gone.  Some in a fax, while others got phone calls in nursing homes.  The score for this film deserves an award (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  The frantic music playing, as Bernie attempts to get more money from investors when his biggest clients cash out, brings you a true sense of panic.  The downfall of The Wizard of Lies is you only watch this movie from the performances. You know the story.  You don’t learn anything new about the Madoffs in any way.  This is good for killing a few hours on great performances.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Seduced by a Stranger – Review

Seduced by a Stranger – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Seduced By A Strange

Dana Hale is tired of constantly moving and begs her father Martin to change his life so she can be a normal kid.  She wants to go to school, participate in a community, and meet a nice guy.  Everything is going smoothly at her new school when Dana meets Charlie.  Charlie is a nice, athletic young man with a sense of humor.  When Charlie asks Dana and her father to home to his home to meet him and his mother Dana, she agrees.  Once the parents meet, Martin and Dana reveal they have met and had coffee.  At first, Dana and Charlie are confused but Charlie accepts that his mom likes Martin.  On the other hand, Dana is worried.  In the past, Martin was a con-artist that wooed ladies and stole all their money.  Dana believes Martin will fall into old habits, ruining her normal life and her relationship with Charlie.  Martin promises he has turned over a new leaf.  While on their second date, Dana and Charlie are having a good time until someone runs over Dana’s bike on purpose.  She warns her dad that someone may be onto him.  Martin knows that he left everything in the past but when Dana describes the car, it’s the same one that tried to kill him.  Martin better watch out, because his past is coming for him; it has a gun and a broken heart.

Congrats, Lifetime made a movie without any bratty teens.  Dana and Charlie are mature, funny, and the anchors of their family.  Also, this movie will have you nervous for the stalker.  As she walks around Martin’s home and almost gets caught several times, you will be on pins and needles.  And the cinematography of Sloane’s anger is magnificent.  When she sees her symbol of love being given to another woman, flames ignite from the fireplace behind her and the slowly zoom on her face as it changes.  Hell hath no fury like a woman scorn.  Sloane is the right mixture of crazy and sweet.  You can see something is off but she is just so nice.  While the climax is a little drab, the overall movie is great.  So sit back and watch

Mommy Dead and Dearest – Review

Mommy Dead and Dearest – HBO – 1 hour and 30 minutes

Mommy Dead and Dearest

On June 15, 2015, Gypsy Rose Blanchard walks into the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office in Waukesha, WI and surprises officers by doing two things. First, she walked. Everyone in town believed she was suffering from muscular dystrophy and was wheelchair bound. Second, Gypsy conspired with Nicholas Godejohn to kill her mother Dee Dee. Dee Dee for years had been by her daughter’s side as Gypsy battled cancer, muscular dystrophy, asthma, mental retardation, and a host of other ailments. Police and everyone who knew the two didn’t understand why Gypsy would want Dee Dee killed, but once they knew Gypsy could walk, they started to investigate. They learn that Dee Dee’s deception fooled family, friends, strangers, and even Gypsy. Once the investigation is done, no one pities Dee Dee but can they trust Gypsy?

This is a sad case of long-term torture and abuse that leads to love and a murder. You will not only be astounded by the complicit doctors and nurses, but you will also be amazed by the generations of liars in this family. For years, Dee Dee scammed people for homes, trips, and money by faking her daughter’s illnesses. But the sickest part, she made Gypsy believe she was sick too. Now Gypsy knew she could walk but she believed she had cancer, along with all the other ailments, and Gypsy didn’t know her real age. The Good Nanny – Review

The Good Nanny – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Good Nanny

Clint and Summer are celebrating their engagement when the carpet is pulled from under them. Summer suffers a miscarriage but never knew she was pregnant. While at their engagement party, Clint introduces Summer to his boss Travis and his wife Lily. Before the night is over, Lily ask Summer to be her interior designer and Monica (Summer’s best friend) to be her daughter Sofia’s pediatrician. Both agree to help for the sake of Clint’s job. When Summer comes over to do measurements, Lily is called away.  So Lily asks Summer to watch Sophia.  Summer, confused and surprised, says ok. Summer overhears the Sophia talking to someone named Sasha. After looking through the room, Summer surmises that Sasha is an imaginary friend. Once Lily comes home, she asks Summer to be Sophia’s nanny.  Summer says yes because she will be getting an interior designer’s paycheck to be a nanny. Summer is quickly bonding with the girl. But when Summer learns that Sophia sleeps with a knife, has burns over her arms, and says her parents don’t lover her, Summer will do anything to protect Sophia from Lily and Travis.

This movie is not what you expected. And that is awesome. Just when you think you know what’s going on, you are thrown a curve ball. This young actress takes creepy to a new, yet fun, level. It hard to know who is telling the truth, because everyone is lying about something. You want Summer to save the child, but does she really need to be saved? Or is she the dangerous one? This movie is a fun mystery with lots of twist and turns. So sit back and watch this movie with your full attention. DVR it so you can skip the commercials. It’s worth it!
