Mavis realizes the more she and her father Dracula work together, the less time they spend together as a family.  She wants to make sure Dennis knows his grandfather.  So, Mavis books a cruise with several stops and the final stop being the Bermuda Triangle.  At first, Dracula isn’t impressed because he believes a cruise boat is just a hotel on the water.  But he changes his mind when he sees Captain Ericka.  Dracula hasn’t told his family, but he has been feeling lonely and wishes he can feel the “zing” again.  He hasn’t felt it since his wife died.  So, having that “zing” come back the moment he sees Ericka puts a pep in his step.  But Dracula doesn’t know that Ericka is the great-granddaughter of his arch nemesis Abraham Van Helsing.  And she has one mission, to retrieve an item to destroy all of monster-kind, including Dracula.

This movie falls in-line with the Hotel Transylvania franchise (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has enough kid humor to keep children entertained while providing the musical score parents will love.  This movie features a DJ mix off you will never forget.  While it does have several aspects you will love, it starts to get boring and predictable.  Your mind will start to wander.  However, it does provide a message of love and loss that children and adult will understand.  See this movie matinee

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

She’s my right arm’s cousin – Frank

When will you Van Helsing learn to get go of that – Dracula

Yes, I’m human but don’t hold that against me – Ericka

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Review

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Budget of $35 – 45 million – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

The U.S. Government want to add Mexican Drug Cartels to the terrorist list after several suicide bombers attacked on American soil with the cartels’ help.  At first, they consider going after the head of the cartel.  However, Graver knows this approach will only create more cartels.  Graver decides to start a cartel war by going after the kingpin’s children.  He will kidnap Isabel with the help of Alejandro.  And during the kidnapping, they will make Isabel think they are saving her in order to gain her confidence.  But when the mission changes Isabel and Alejandro are collateral damage that must be dealt with immediately.  Will Graver hurt or help this situation?

The second act of Sicario, this movie is not a continuation of the first but still keeps the same momentum (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has lots of action and twists to keep you entertained.  But some moments are just dull and slow.  It was bloody, violent, and with government cover-ups, however, it never fully captivated the audience.  The stand-out moment was the US/Mexican shootout near the border.   It provided more action in that one scene than most action movies have it their entirety.  If you are a fan of the first, you will enjoy this one.  To newcomers, you don’t need to see the first to watch the second.  Also, there is a great potential for a part 3. But this won’t be the cult classic the first movie became.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

You believe that change is the goal. You have been doing this too long to believe that – Cynthia

Remember what happened to the price of cocaine after 9/11. Tight borders are good for business – Gravers

Uncle Drew – Review

Uncle Drew – Budget of $17 – 19 million – 1 hour and 43 minutes

Uncle Drew
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Uncle Drew was the biggest name in Rucker tournament.  However, after a clash with his team members, none of the 5 players showed up.  Now, the tournament has a $100,000 prize and creates legends.  Dax is a Ruckers coach who has lost his players, girlfriend, and home.  He needs this $100,000 to get his life back on track.  As he sits on the sidelines, literally and figuratively, trying to figure out what to do, he sees an old man teaching a young man about the game.  Dax, like most onlookers, laughs at the elderly man, until he starts to win.  Dax quickly finds Drew and ask him to be on his team.  Drew tells Dax it has to be his team and his rooster.  Dax tries to counter but Drew breaks him down.  Dax and Drew go on a road trip to find:

  1. Boots – on a psychiatric hold and in a wheelchair
  2. Big Fella – a Karate instructor
  3. Lights – blind
  4. Preacher – A preacher with a wife who WILL find him

While they all get closer, Drew and Dax are both keeping a secret.  Dax isn’t opening up about his missed hoop dreams and lack of love.  Drew isn’t opening up about his role in the team’s break up.  In order for the team to become a family, everything must come out into the light.

While this movie is better than expected, it’s what you expect.  It has some laughs, some heart, and some good basketball.  The team not only play in the Rucker Tournament, they also play against high school girls.  This movie also has a lot of messages.  First about letting go of the past.  Second, keep playing.  Three, don’t let your pride get in your way.  Even though it has all these messages, it doesn’t get preachy.  So if you are looking for a decent laugh, see this movie matinee.  If you love basketball, wait for Netflix or Vudu.  Stick during the end credits for bloopers and behind the scenes shots.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

A bag of Dax makes more sense – Mookie

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Uncle Drew

You’re Gladys Knight and they’re the Pips – Dax

Lately, monsters who smell fear have been appearing in Gotham.  When Bruce destroys them, they leave an image behind of 3 squares.   Batman is sure of three things.  First, these are aliens. Second, these boxes mean something.  Three, he is going to need help.  After an intense battle, Wonder Woman explains the 3 boxes are the Mother Boxes. The three boxes were left on earth and keep apart. The boxes were hidden in Themyscira, Atlantis, and somewhere on earth. But with the world more divided than ever, the boxes have woken up and called Steppenwolf.  If the boxes come together, creating the Unity, Steppenwolf will rain terror on earth.  The world fought off Steppenwolf before and won. Now, he is determined to rule the world once and for all.  Bruce knows the team is tough but it needs a true leader.  In order to get the best leader, they must bring him back.

The graphics should only be on the big screen.  Since one of the main characters and the main villain are heavily CGI’ed, it takes away from some of the fight scenes.  It’s noticeable when the actor is replaced with a computer simulation.   Since 3 of the heroes didn’t have a movie to explain their origin story, the writers were tasked with making us care about them.  They succeeded.  Cyborg’s tumultuous relationship with his father, The Flash’s painful relationship with his father, and Aquaman’s distance from Atlantis are all explained in great detail.  Knowing what drives them breathes new life into the DC Universe movie.  The storyline brings you in and keeps your attention.  The movie features heart-wrenching moments along with some good laughs.  See this in theaters and stay past the end credits for a look at the future of the Justice League.

Nine months BC, a simple mill donkey dreams of joining a traveling caravan with his friend Dave the Dove. After trying to escape for 6 months, he gives up all hope. Then an older donkey helps him break free. During his escape, his is chased by the miller and hurts his hoof. He finds a place to hide but is discovered by a pregnant Mary. Earlier that year, Mary was visited by an angel who told her she would become pregnant and give birth to the Messiah. Mary names the donkey Boaz, Bo for short, and puts a splint on his injured hoof. Joseph is not a fan of the donkey but is given a bigger shock when he learns his wife is pregnant. After praying, Joseph accepts the pregnancy and vows to raise the child. When Mary and Joseph leave to participate in the census, a king’s soldier and 2 guard dogs, Rufus and Thaddeus, break into the home. At the king’s order, they were sent to find Mary and destroy the baby. Hearing this Bo must find Mary and save their baby.

The greatest story ever told through the eyes of the animals that witness everything. Be advised, the writers stated they took some liberties with the story but the base is still present. Parents don’t worry, they never use the word virgin, sex, or kill. But still get the message across about faith and love between Joseph, Mary, and God. It’s a good introduction to the story of Christmas for young children. One of the funniest moments is seeing Bo imitate Mary and Joseph.  Also, the wise men’s camels are hilarious in all of their scenes.  It’s charming, witty, and informative of the meaning of Christmas. While this is not a “full price” movie, it is a great matinee movie for the kids to start a conversation about Christmas.

August “Auggie” Pullman is your typical 10-year-old.  He likes Minecraft, sports, his family, and outer space.  He has a sister and best friend named Olivia (also called Via).  She is loving, strong, and self-sufficient.  With school starting, she is concerned about her brother and that her best friend Miranda is pulling away.  On her 4th birthday, she wished for a baby brother; but she had no idea how it would change her life and relationship with her parents.  Nate is Auggie and Via “cool” dad.  He can always provide a quick laugh to his family but worries about Auggie’s next phase in life.  Isabel Pullman is a confident mom who homeschooled Auggie but believes he is ready for a change.  The change is Auggie’s first day of middle school.  While most students would blend in, Auggie will always stand out.  He was born with a genetic facial deformity.  After 27 surgeries, he can hear, see, breathe, and look better but he will always be different.  This day will have a ripple effect on his family and classmates.

Based on the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio, this story is beautifully adapted to film (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It starts by giving several different points of view of Auggie’s first day.  First, Auggie.  The young, scared boy met with a few students before the first day and they left a bad taste in his mouth.  Second, Via.  She whispers words of encouragement to Auggie, then leaves for school. She feels ignored but must continue to be understanding. So Miranda ignoring her; leaves her alone. Third, Jack Will. He is a scholarship kid who is asked by the principal and his mom to be nice to the new kid. Finally, Miranda. With divorcing parents, she escapes at summer camp. But her escape keeps her away from Via. In the second half of the movie, all these stories come together to tell a moving story about choosing kindness and strength. It is a movie that will draw you in and make you wonder. Just wonder. See this with your children and ignore the PG rating. All kids should see this film with their parents and discuss.

Senior year and Christine, who prefers to be called Lady Bird, is trying to figure out life.  Her father Larry has lost his job and feeling down.  Her mother Marion is a mental health nurse who is strong but very critical.  While, Marion wants her daughter to stay at home, for emotional, safety, and financial concerns, Lady Bird wants to leave Sacremento.  She considers her hometown the “Mid-West of California”.  She wants to go to school on the east coast, but it’s 2002 and America just witness the 9/11 attacks.  As the end of her senior year approaches, Lady Bird has to discover her true friends, the effects of her words, the feelings of others, and that dramatic actions have dramatic consequences.

This movie is an independent darling.  It hits with a strong punch of humor by pulling everyday conversations we have had with our friends and family and putting it on the screen.  In one scene, Marion and Lady Bird are arguing and in a split second, they are marveling over a dress.  These coming-of-age films are not new, with movies like Edge of Seventeen, Breaking Legs, and Ingrid Goes West, the main character is noticeable flawed but gains some strength when they notice the world around them.  If you are a lover of independent movies, see it a full price.  Otherwise, matinee price is a better option.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

I wish I could live through something – Lady Bird

No one’s asking you to be perfect. Just consider it – Marion

Sargent Tommy Saunders is on suspension from the Boston Police Department and has to do beat cop work to get his job back.  The final beat is patrolling the Boston Marathon’s finish line. Dun Meng was trying to sell his new app to local restaurants while missing is family in China. He finally works up the nerve to ask out a cashier at a restaurant and takes her out after the bombing for normalcy. Patrick Downes and Jessica Kesky, newlyweds, decide to watch the race instead of going to watch the Red Sox play. Steve Woolfenden, a family man, takes his son, Leo, to the race for a good time.  Officer Sean Collier, works for MIT security and makes plans to go out with his dream girl to a concert. Brothers, Dzhokhar “Black Hat” and Tamerlan “White Hat” Tsarnaev, sit and watch Al-Qaeda instruction videos for bomb making while eating breakfast. All these people, Boston, and the world will be changed with 2 bombs. When the smoke clears, blood, body parts, and ball bearings will be all over the ground … leaving the FBI Agent Richard DesLauriers in charge over Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis ,his team, and the investigation. They know they have to stop Black Hat and White Hat before they set of another bomb. But another question the police have: Is there anymore bombs around the City? They will do everything to stop the bombers and save Boston.

BOSTON STRONG!!!! This movie is shot like a reality TV show. The camera focuses in and out, is not steady, and it’s shot from weird angles. This makes you believe you are watching this as it happens. Also, real clips of the bombing, race, capture, and news coverage are used to help drive the story. This movie tugs at the heart strings, will make you scream in angry, and smile with joy. You are inspired that Boston, the Police, and the FBI all came together and work as a unit to catch the Tsarnaev brothers. The FBI quickly learn that their biggest weapon was Boston’s eyes and ears. And hearing first person testimonials at the end are poignant and endearing perspective.  Although every story that day can not be told, these accounts gives a conclusion to each story. This is a great movie for adults to see at full price. Children will not be able to handle some of the images.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Do I look like a clown – Tommy Saunders

Is it just me or do I get better looking everyday – Jeffrey Pugliese

Are you ready for this – Dzhokhar Tsarnaev

Yeah, but I am a fornicator – Tamerlan Tsarnaev

After a memorable and untraditional introduction, Ned and Barb’s daughter, Stephanie, decide to let her parents meet her boyfriend, Laird. On their way to the hotel, Stephanie informs them they that she changed the original plans. Her parents and her brother, Scotty, will be staying at Laird’s home. She wants her parents to get to know him better, but after “the introduction”, Ned feels he knows enough. After some tense and uncomfortable moments, Laird invites Ned to his “office”. Laird asks for Ned blessing to ask for Stephanie’s hand in marriage. Ned says “No” because “Stephanie isn’t ready”. Laird disagrees. So the two make a pinky promise. If Laird can win Ned over, Ned will give his blessing. And with that blessing, Laird will propose on Christmas (which is 3 days away). Now, Ned is determined to change his Stephanie’s mind about Laird. But Laird is changing the family one member of the time.

Get ready to laugh and cover your eyes in surprise/shock/disgust. Is easy to miss jokes because you are laughing and have your eyes close. Now, crude humor is used in this story, but it is done well. Every F-bomb is done in a matter that is funny not stupid. It does tell the story of a power struggle between two men who have more in common than they know. Although Ned is asking “Why Him”, in a video montage the audience sees Laird and Stephanie’s love. Cameos are used more as long running jokes that drive the story. You will want to watch it again to believe you saw what you think you saw. You will never see a toilet, a moose, or food the same after this movie. If you like 21 Jump Street mixed with Guess Who? with a dash of The Hangover, this is for you (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

For centuries, Storks have delivered babies to humans. However, 18 years ago, that all came to an end when Jasper, a stork, wanted to keep one of the babies. In a tussle, the baby’s beacon broke and they never found her home. Today, the baby, known as Orphan Tulip, lives among the storks; and storks deliver packages for CornerStore.com instead of babies. Junior, a stork, has just delivered his 1,000,000th package and his boss, Hunter, has great news for him. Hunter will be moving up to the head office and Junior will become the boss on Monday. Hunter tells Junior to ensure is new position, he must not screw up until Monday and fire Tulip. Hunter points out that every time Tulip “helps”, production goes down. Junior tries to fire Tulip, but when he hears it’s her 18th birthday, he can’t. Instead, he moves her to the letter office and tells her never to leave.

Back on earth, Nate is a rambunctious little boy with parents who are overzealous about their non-stop real estate jobs. Nate, feeling lonely, decides that he wants a little brother. Henry and Sarah, Nate’s parents, tell him that he is enough and they aren’t going to have any more children. Later, Nate finds a Storks brochure in the attic and writes a letter requesting a brother. Of course, Nate’s letter winds up in the hands of Tulip. Tulip accidentally puts the letter in a baby maker and a baby comes out. Junior knows this will screw up his chances for his promotion if Hunter finds out.  So, he must fix it. With the help of Tulip and an injured wing, Junior will deliver this baby and get his promotion. Tulip wants to help because if she can help this baby find her family, maybe she can find her family one day, too.

Storks is as heartfelt as it is funny. Also, the Wolf Pack are as hilarious as The Hangover’s Wolf Pack and shape shift more than The Twilight’s Wolf Pack (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  They steal the show.  Storks is fun because it makes fun of itself for being outrageous and sometimes silly. It may not be a classic but it is worth seeing in the theaters. Children and adults will laugh alike and it may bring a tear to your eye. If you come early you will be treated with a Lego Short Movie, but don’t stay pass the end crawl. There is no need to see this movie in 3D, but full price will not be a disappointment.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

If I go blind, it was worth it. – Junior

So Rell and Clarence need to keep up their assassin facade, make the drug run, and get Keanu back. This is a ride you will not forget.

This movie is unexpectedly funny. Don’t worry, you have not seen the best parts in the trailer. It has honest plot twist and WTF, OMG, and HFS moments. The laughs are consistent and weaves in parts of the duos comedy act. Go to this movie expecting more 21 Jump Street, Rush Hour 1, or Ride Along 1 laughs. Keanu doesn’t take itself seriously like Barbershop. Go to this movie to have a good time. Full price is worth it.

Orphaned and bushy eyebrows have made Red an outcast all his life. But since he couldn’t beat the flock, he alienated himself from the flock. Now, Red provides food and entertainment for children’s birthday parties. When a parent claimed he was late, Red lost it and cracked the parents’ egg. The parents took Red to court for causing them mental distress. Since, Red’s face is the first face their hatchling saw, it calls Red daddy. The Judge sentenced Red to anger management, the worst punishment for this happy flock. In anger management Red meets Matilda (the group’s leader), Bomb (exploded when he was frightened at his surprise party), Chuck (speeding, robbery, credit card fraud, and destruction of property), and Terrence (what ever he did, it was horrific). Then a ship rolls in carrying … what else … pigs. Red knows Leonard, King Pig, and his friends intentions are bad. However, all the other birds just want to be happy and welcome the pigs. Finally, with the “help” of the Mighty Eagle, Red sees the Pigs’ nefarious plot. Steal all the eggs and eat them! Now Red must teach the birds to be angry and fight to save their children.

Ok … well … this movie is cute. The plot is a mix of Despicable Me, Up, Indian Jones, and X-men: Days of Futures Past with the Angry Birds game. It didn’t break any ground in animation or story telling. It tried to tug on the heart strings but you won’t care enough to get emotional. It’s adult jokes fell flat. The score is the best part of this movie. They picked new and old music to capture the tastes of all movie goers. Also, the voice actors did a great job with a bad script. If you take your child to see this movie, expect them to leave with the same feeling as The Good Dinosaur. Ok but not great and a little bored. Also, your younger children probably won’t eat eggs for a while. Wait for Red Box. Angry Birds can be skipped.

I give this 2 out of 5 stars
