Molly Bloom survived a 63-degree curve in her spine to become an Olympic hopeful.  And with a frozen branch, her path to life took a dangerous, illegal, and drug-addicted turn.  She started working as a cocktail waitress at a nightclub at night and a director’s secretary in the day.  With a high LSAT score, the best college education, and a head for numbers, Molly knew her boss’s company was failing.  However, he was still making money.  Molly didn’t know how until he told her to contact a list of numbers for an underground poker game he ran.  As Molly collected the buy-in, took tips, and cashed out the players, she studied every term, play, and every player to become the “Princess of Poker”.  But no princess could ever do what she did.

Based on the novel Molly’s Game by Molly Bloom, this movie goes at a pace as fast as a poker game (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Molly explains how she got in the business, why she got in the business, and who she is outside the tabloid headlines.  She remained clean and even paid taxes, but the last 2 years were a downward spiral with drugs, attacks, and illegal rake taking.  She doesn’t lie about who she is or what she did.  However, she protects the players who have not been exposed.  Even with a million dollars on the table and no money to her name, she refuses to give up her players.   She is a stand-up woman in a man’s game.  This is a movie to watch twice and see if you can keep up.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Phineas Barnum was a tailor’s son.  Although his father made and fix clothes for the rich, Phineas still had holes in his shoes.  During a job, he meets Charity and made her laugh causing her to spit out her tea.  Phineas was slapped and Charity was sent to finishing school.  Although the two were separated and living vastly different lives, they continued to write each other letters.  When she comes back, he is waiting to present her with a ring.  Several jobs and 2 kids later, Phineas has lost his job and believes he has failed his family. Although Charity tells him she is happy, he wants to give them the life he believes they deserve. So with fake paperwork, he secures a loan from the bank to create a Museum of Oddities. He has no takers until his girls given him an idea. They tell their father he has too many dead things in his museum. If he wants people to come, he has to have things that are alive and spectacular. P. T. Barnum collects the oddest humans he can find to create the Greatest Show on Earth. With his success will P.T. ever be taken seriously or just another act in his “freak show”?

From the opening number to the final song, you will feel chills with each performance. Admiring one person on the screen cheats yourself of all the stunning performances on the screen. Like P.T.’s Circus, there are 5 different things happening on the screen at one time. If you do not see this movie in the theater, you can not understand the true beauty and awe of each performance. The songs will ring in your head and become a soundtrack to get you out of hard times in your life. You will feel a connection to each oddity on the screen. As stated in the film, P.T.’s ability to put people of different sizes, backgrounds, races, creeds, religions, and stations in life together on stage was a celebration of humanity.  Not a freak show.  Come and enjoy this movie/musical of inclusion and acceptance with the whole family.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

In Rome 1973, Paul “Paolo” Getty walked up to some prostitutes to find a good time.  After being rejected for his age, he is kidnapped and held for $17 million dollars.  Now to some, this is a large sum of money but Paul is the grandson of John Paul Getty.  John is the richest man in the history of the world.  He discovered a way to get oil out of Saudia Arabia and created a shipping company to get the oil to the US.  He is a billionaire a few times over.  He can make the ransom in interest alone.  But when asked by the press, John believes the price to pay is nothing.  He has 14 grandchildren and believes paying the ransom will put them all at risk.  However, behind the scenes, John has hired Fletcher Chase; his #1 deal maker.  Fletcher has to strike a deal with the kidnappers and handle his toughest obstacle: Gail Getty, Paul’s mother.  John has refused her request to see or speak to him about helping her son.  She has been broke since she divorced her husband (John’s son) and got full custody of the kids due to her husband’s drug addiction.  This mother will stop at nothing to help her son, even go after an empire publicly.

Based on the novel Painfully Rich by John Pearson, you will leave being disgusted and saddened by John Getty (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s understandable to see his concern about how ransom payment will make his family victims.  But how much money is enough for one person?  And when is the money controlling you?  John valued things not people and could hold grudges for years.  Gail was the polar opposite of John.  She valued her family and was determined to go to every extreme to get her son back.  While the world believes she was rich, she only got the Getty name, not the money.  She will take the empire to task and you will cheer for her each time she stands up to John.  The biggest turn around in the entire movie is Fletcher.  He will go from one of John’s henchmen to Gail’s biggest supporter.  This is one to see and experience.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Thor has been working to stop the prophecy of the Asgard’s demise called Ragnarok.  However, when he gets home, he learns that the 9 realms are falling apart.  Thor knows his father would never let that happen, so he confronts him and exposes that it is Loki.  Thor demands to be taken to their father.  Oden lets his sons know that Hela is on her way.  She is the Goddess of Death, bent on revenge, and their sister.  As the oldest, Hela feels she is the rightful heir to the throne.  She despises Oden for changing his way and locking her away.  While absorbing the news of a new found sister, Thor and Loki stand before her.  During the fight, Loki calls for Heimdall.  But all three are swept up in the Bitfröst Bridge while still fighting.  Hela throws Loki and Thor out; she heads to Asgard to rule while the brothers land on the planet Sakaar.  Hela sets her sights on taking over all the realms and by destroying everything in her path.  Her only obstacle: someone stole the Bitfröst Sword.  She must find it to continue her domination.

Thor, without his hammer, is confronted by Sakaar locals.  But soon Scrapper 142 finds him and marks him as a contender.  Thor is set to be in the Grand Master’s game and face the Grand Master’s Champion.  Thor worries that without his hammer, he will fail.  But he will learn the truth about Scrapper 142, the Grand Master’s Champion, Loki’s whereabouts, Hela’s power, Ragnarok, and what it truly means to be the God of Thunder.

Be prepared to laugh and be in awe.  When there isn’t a physical battle, you are given a verbal battle.  Sakaar is given its own color palette which completely separates it from Asgard.  New characters are introduced with clear and concise backstories which allows them to shine with their own personalities.  Since this movie is one of the funniest in the Marvel series, the humor causes the special effects to be more cartoonish than realistic.  So, the Hulk looks like a cartoon next to a real object.  At times it just doesn’t blend.  Don’t worry, you will get the joy of cameos from Stan Lee and Dr. Strange.  As well as post end credit scenes.  So see this movie at full price and IMAX, before someone tells to much.  3D is not necessary

World famous detective Hercule Poirot just finished a case at The Wailing Wall and wants to take a vacation.  Just as he is planning to relax, he gets a new case from London and must return.  Poirot’s friend Bouc (director of the Orient Express) offers him a ride on the full train.  During a dessert service, Poirot is approached by Samuell Ratchett.  Ratchett has received several death threats and wants to hire Poirot as his bodyguard.  During the night, Poirot sees someone running in a red robe and hears noises coming from Ratchett’s room.  The butler knocks on the door, hears “It’s nothing”, and walks away.  Poirot goes to his room and sleeps.  Later an avalanche, the train derails and leaves them all stranded together.  The butler knocks on everyone’s door but when Ratchett doesn’t answer, Poirot opened the door.  Inside Ratchett is dead with 12 stab wounds to the chest.  Poirot finds a partially destroyed note, a bloody handkerchief with the letter “H” on it, and a cup of barbital drugged coffee.  Poirot must discover the killer before the train is back on the tracks.

Based on the novel Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie, this movie has to be watched twice (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  There is so much going on with so many characters, it’s hard to keep up.  While telling a grim tale, it does provide a few laughs at the human condition.  You feel an urge to solve the mystery along with Poirot.  This movie allows you to come up with your own theories as Poirot questions each suspect.  But be warned this movie DOES follow the book; no new suspects, plots, or murders are given.  The director, Kenneth Branagh, must be applauded for his use of continuous shots as Poirot enters and leaves the train.  Also, some scenes are shot from above, allowing the audience to be a fly on the wall or ceiling.  Seeing the behind the scene and the director’s commentary on this movie will be amazing.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Amy sits in a destroyed house, in tears.  She has ruined Christmas for her children.  She sits and wonders where it all went wrong.  She thinks back to a few days prior when she got a text that froze her in place.  Her parents Ruth and Hank were coming for Christmas.  Ruth is extremely critical of Amy as a mom.  So when Amy tells Ruth she wants a laid back Christmas, Ruth takes over, decorates, coordinates, and congregates.  To get away from it all, Amy goes to see her friends Carla and KiKi.   Kiki’s mother Sandy came to town early.  She has no boundaries when it comes to Kiki.  Sandy says KiKi is her best friend and wants to spend every moment with her.  KiKi is horrified.  Carla’s mother Isis blew into town on a truck.  Isis is a hands-off mother with a gambling problem.  Carla is glad to see Isis but she knows Isis will ask for money and leave town.  Carla, KiKi, and Amy are stressed out with decorating, shopping, and wrapping to create the perfect Christmas.  But with their mother’s in town, they decide to take Christmas back and have fun.

A sequel to Bad Moms may have not been expected but fun for the holiday season.  While the holidays are fun, they are extremely stressful.  It’s fun to watch these ladies take over and be bad.  While each cast member holds their own, Christine Baranski takes over whenever she is on the screen.  Her ability to be the very definition of poised while ripping her daughter to shreds is amazing.  You will either laugh or have your jaw on the floor each time she speaks.  With a stripper, a smooth jazz legend, and tough game of dodgeball, this is a fun movie for adults.  Also no need to stay past the 1st end credits.  See this at the matinee price as an escape from the typical holiday movie.

Quan drops of his daughter at a dress shop then attempts to park his car but gets in an accident.  When he and the other driver start to argue, a bomb explodes and kills 12 people, including his daughter.  Quan is consumed with the loss because he already lost 2 daughters and his wife.  His daughter was the only family he had left.  He visits the police station every day asking for the name of the bombers but the police don’t know.  Quan even offers £30,000 for the names but the police can’t do that.  While watching the news, Quan learns that the Authentic IRA have taken responsibility for the bombing.  Also, Quan sees Liam doing an interview on TV.  During the interview, Liam, now a British Government official, use to belong to the IRA.   Quan believes Liam must know something.  So he calls every day for information.  After his requests go ignored, Quan goes to visit Liam at his office.  Liam states that he doesn’t know anything about the bombing.  Quan doesn’t believe Liam and will go through hell or high water to get the name of the men who killed his child.

Based on The Chinaman By Stephen Leather, this action movie packs more emotion than you are lead to believe (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  This is not a simple “kill everyone” movie.  In fact, Quan doesn’t kill that many people.  He leaves them hurt or unconscious.  This movie starts with some great acting from Jackie Chan as he displays the pains of a father that has nothing left.   As the action picks up, you will get drawn to Quan’s ability to outwit the people around him.  As great as Jackie is in the film, the story focuses more on Liam and the bombers.  You will get a tale of Irish espionage, affairs, and government cover-ups.  This story is complex and covers a lot of ground in a little time.  This is worth seeing in theaters at full price but be forewarned of the 3 different accents throughout the film: Chinese, Irish, and British.  If you have a hard time understanding any, this movie may have difficult moments for you.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Teresa, a.k.a Tree wakes up in Carter’s dorm room with a raging headache.  She asks him for an aspirin, puts on her clothes, and leaves.  She heads to her sorority house and crosses an activist, sprinklers, a car alarm, and pledges.  She is greeted by Danielle with accusations about what she did the night before and with whom.  She brushes off Danielle after being reminded of a frat party that night.  She heads to her room and is given a surprise birthday cupcake by her roommate Lori.  She throws the cupcake away (too many carbs) and heads to her class.  After class, she meets with her sorority sisters and helps them make fun of another sister.  When Carter causes a drink to be spilled on her, she snaps and insults him.  Next, she meets up with her married professor and makes out with him.  Later, she heads to the frat party.  On the way she finds a jewelry box playing “Happy Birthday” and seeks a person wearing a school mascot mask.  Then, the person stabs her in the chest.  When she wakes up, she is in Carter’s bedroom with a raging headache and chest pains.  She realizes she is reliving the same day over again.  After a few deaths, Carter tells her she needs to solve her own murder to make it stop.  The problem: Each time she wakes up, she is weaker and has pain from the last death.   She must find out who is killing her before Tree runs out of lives.

This is Groundhog’s Day meets Before I Fall with a murder mystery thrown into the mix.  The first time she gets killed, you don’t feel bad because she is a horrible person with little respect for anyone around her.  But with each life, she changes a little and sees the error of her ways.  You will keep track of everyone she pisses off in order to solve the case.  During some lives, she will make sacrifices to save herself and others.  And each death will answer some questions but raise some too.  This is a fun slasher flick with plenty of humor thrown in the film.  You may jump one or two times, but you will not be completely frightened.  This movie focuses on the mystery more than the murder.  See it at matinee price or wait for RedBox.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Alex is a photojournalist who is leaving for her wedding.  Ben is a neurosurgeon who is leaving to perform surgery on a 10-year-old.  But due to an incoming storm, their flights were canceled.  Alex overhears Ben’s problem and comes up with a solution.  They will charter a flight to a nearby airport and continue to their respective destinations from there.  Ben thinks this is a great plan and pays for Alex’s ticket to her next flight.  They meet their pilot Walter, who is a Vietnam Vet.  Walter is not worried about the storm because he has been through worse.  However, once they are in the air, Walter has a stroke and their plane crashes.  When Ben wakes up, he sees that Walter is dead, the dog is alive, and Alex his hurt and unconscious.  After 36 hours, Alex wakes up and wants to leave because she feels that no one is looking for them.  After both have brushes with death, Alex wants to start moving but Ben thinks staying put is best.  Alex decided to leave Ben and take the dog.  However, Ben knows she won’t make it on her own because of her injury and goes to find her.  They will have to lean on each other to get through the mountain and horrific weather together and survive.

Based on The Mountain Between Us by Charles Martin, has plenty of tense moments that involve a cougar, slip & fall, a bear trap, and thin ice (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  There is a moment where the cinematographer uses the magnificent landscape to give the audience a feeling of dread and doom.  Of course, it doesn’t take long for the two to start bickering and impeding their own rescue.  However, this fight only comes because they are both keeping secrets from each other.  Revealing these secrets will unleash a dam of emotions.  As a survival story, this movie is great but it defaults to a Hallmark movie at the end.  The survival story is the movie’s saving grace because it is a realistic, raw, and honest.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

After one more altercation, Jake’s school suggest he goes to a clinic. His stepfather says yes and his mother reluctantly agrees.  That night he has a dream about a gunslinger named Roland and his father battling the man in black.  The father succumbs to the suggestions of the man in black and Roland is heartbroken.  Then, the Roland heads to a house.  The next day, Jake looks for more information about the house in his dreams but is interrupted when Julie and a helper comes to take Jake to the clinic.  But Jake knows something is off with his escorts.  They have the same twitches and scars Jake has seen in his dreams.  In a split second decision, Jake runs away to the home in his dream.  He goes through a secret portal and ends up in Mid-World, the home of the Roland and Walter, the man in black.  Soon, Roland and Jake cross paths.  That’s when Jake learns that his dreams are real.  Walter is using children to power a device to destroy the dark tower.  This tower protects all the worlds in the universe from evil.  If the tower falls, every world would have an apocalypse.  Roland believes that Jake’s dreams are really visions; they hold to key to where Walter is hiding.  Roland is ready to seek vengeance for his father’s death.  However, this vengeance could do more harm than good.   Roland and Jake must come together to end Walter, the man in black.

Based on The Dark Tower by Stephen King, this is a fun movie for the family (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  But be forewarned, all the previews are not all appropriate.  Once this story gets going, there is no lag.  It keeps a compelling storyline for the imagination to soar.  While Dolby is not necessary, the imagery and set designs deserve to be seen on the big screen.  Now some moments are obviously CGI, but most blend in seamlessly.  So for a sci-fi fantasy, this is the one to see.  And a part 2 will come.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

After working the morning shift at her waitress job, Karla finally can step away to take her son Frankie to the park. He carries a recording device that he likes to playback and loves to hide. She plays Marco Polo with him often to find him in a crowd of children. While listening to music, she gets a call from her divorce attorney. He tells Karla that her ex-husband wants primary custody. Just as she is about to give the lawyer a piece of her mind, her phone disconnects. She goes back to Frankie and can’t find him. She calls out Marco but gets nothing back. Then she starts to panic. And for a brief second, she sees a woman pulling him into the back seat of the car. She runs to the car and holds on for dear life until she is forced off, which causes her to drop her phone. She jumps into her car as starts to chase them into busy traffic. She notices Frankie’s recorder is still on and plays it back.  She hears the kidnapping taking place.  The kidnappers run into cars, threatens Frankie’s life with a knife, and run over a police officer to make her stop.    Then, they pull over. She offers all her money in exchange for her son. The woman kidnapper Margo goes up to the passenger side window. She tells Karla if she lets her in her car and drives her to get $10,000, Frankie will be released. Begrudgingly Karla lets her in. Once in a tunnel, all hell breaks loose in the car. With police chasing the wrong car, her son at risk, and a gas tank close to empty, Karla will not stop for anything or anyone until her son is safe.

Go, Karla! Go! This is one to see. This movie will make you cringe (in a good way), make you cheer, yell at the screen, and laugh inappropriately. It is not a Lifetime movie, it is an action-packed thriller of a mother’s determination and quick thinking. You don’t say “why would you do that”. Because she doesn’t. You don’t say “why don’t you do this”. Because she does. She doesn’t make stupid mistakes. She just keeps running into WTF moments. Also, this movie starts with baby and childhood home movies of the child so you fall in love with him and become invested in his safety. This is one to see.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

It’s what he wants. It’s what he wants me to do – Margo

You should have stop coming – Terrance

I promise I’m gonna come back. I’m gonna be right back – Karla

Mom! – Frankie

It’s Gene Meh’s first day on the phone.  He will have his own cube and be scanned for the first time if his user Alex selects his emoji.  Gene is so excited.  There is just one problem, he expresses his excitement.  His parents, Mel and Mary Meh, are concerned that their son is not ready.  If he makes the wrong face, it could ruin his career on the phone.  Gene assures his parents he can do it.  He promises he will only be a Meh in Textopolis.  He relaxes into his cube and waits to be used by Alex.  Then he gets selected.  Gene freaks out and makes the wrong face, which displays on the screen.  Smiler, the first emoji ever and the supervisor, calls a board meeting to discuss his future.  She determines that he is a malfunction and should be erased.  Gene runs and she sends anti-virus robots after him.  While escaping, Gene runs into Hi-5 who helps him hide in the Loser Lounge.  The Loser Lounge is for apps that never get used.  Hi-5 tells Gene that he knows a hacker named Jailbreak who can help reprogram him.  It will allow him to only have one emotion, Meh.  At first, she wants nothing to do with Hi-5 or Gene until she sees what Gene can do.   She thinks Gene’s ability to change emotions will allow her to go get through the facial recognition software on Alex’s firewall.  If she can get through the firewall, she can get to the cloud and be free of the phone.  She promises to fix Gene’s emotions if he gets her to the cloud.   But the more they do, the more Alex’s phone malfunction.  He decides to go to the store and have it erased, ending Textopolis and all the emojis forever.

Well, it’s cute.  With the use of well-known apps like YouTube, Dropbox, Twitter, Instagram, Candy Crush, Spotify, Just Dance, and Snapchat, this movie touches the vein of teens existence today (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  They even make the connection between Hyroglyphics using pictures as words and Emojis.    It uses computer terms like firewall, hacker, program, trojan horse, and spam to attract the computer crowd.  But all the jokes fall flat.  This movie is bordering on nostalgic more than funny.  It even jokes that emoticons are the elderly.  But this movie is just cute.  Cute enough to wait for TV.  This is not worth Netflix. The short Hotel Transylvania film “Puppy” was funnier than the movie (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

I give it 1 out of 5 stars

What’s the point of being #1, if there are no other numbers – Gene

There’s nothing like being scanned for the first time – Smiler

I am a malfunction – Mel

I seriously and unsarcastically want you to go away – Jailbreak

Unbeknownst to each other Spock and Kirk want to go in another direction for their lives. Spock, after getting unsettling news, decides to become an Ambassador. Kirk is tired of the monotony of space and wants to become a Vice Admiral. Then, they get a distress signal stating that an escape pod with one passenger is stranded on a planet and damaged. In order to save this lone survivor, they must go through the nebula, a difficult part of space to navigate. Once the Enterprise enters this planet’s airspace, they are attached by Krall’s swarm for an artifact, that is typically used to promote peace. It’s not long before the Enterprise’s crew must escape the ship to avoid death. After the Enterprise crash lands, the crew is separated in toe groups of 2(Spock & Bones, Kirk and Chekov, Uhura & Sulu, Scotty & Jaylah) and each learns a part of the bigger plan. But in order to stop Krall’s plan, they must get together, save the crew, and get a very old ship to fly.

DO NOT LEAVE YOUR SEAT FOR ANY REASON. You will miss something and be confused the entire movie. This movie proves that great trilogies are made up of great action sequences, amazing comedic timing, and petal to the metal story line. The main characters have changed and grown over the past 3 years in the story and in their acting. The only downfall was the motorcycle sequence. It looks too animated and comes off as more of a video game than a movie. With this huge budget, the graphics could have been better. However, the graphics were great for the fight sequences and the “alien looks”. Be ready for some interesting jewelry, classical music, optimistic pessimism, laughs, cheers, somber moments, and a glimpse of some old friends. No need for 3D nor staying past the end crawl.

This movie is the perfect tribute to Leonard Nimoy and Anton Yelchin.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I ripped my shirt again – Kirk

To perfect eyesight and a full head of hair – Bones

Cut it’s throat – Krall

I fail to see the relevance – Spock

I’m feeling generous today, so have at it – Scotty

My edge is not off – Jaylah
