Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation – Review

Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation – Budget of $65 million – 1 hour and 37 minutes

Mavis realizes the more she and her father Dracula work together, the less time they spend together as a family.  She wants to make sure Dennis knows his grandfather.  So, Mavis books a cruise with several stops and the final stop being the Bermuda Triangle.  At first, Dracula isn’t impressed because he believes a cruise boat is just a hotel on the water.  But he changes his mind when he sees Captain Ericka.  Dracula hasn’t told his family, but he has been feeling lonely and wishes he can feel the “zing” again.  He hasn’t felt it since his wife died.  So, having that “zing” come back the moment he sees Ericka puts a pep in his step.  But Dracula doesn’t know that Ericka is the great-granddaughter of his arch nemesis Abraham Van Helsing.  And she has one mission, to retrieve an item to destroy all of monster-kind, including Dracula.

This movie falls in-line with the Hotel Transylvania franchise (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has enough kid humor to keep children entertained while providing the musical score parents will love.  This movie features a DJ mix off you will never forget.  While it does have several aspects you will love, it starts to get boring and predictable.  Your mind will start to wander.  However, it does provide a message of love and loss that children and adult will understand.  See this movie matinee

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

She’s my right arm’s cousin – Frank

When will you Van Helsing learn to get go of that – Dracula

Yes, I’m human but don’t hold that against me – Ericka

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Review

Sicario: Day of the Soldado – Budget of $35 – 45 million – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Sicario: Day of the Soldado
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

The U.S. Government want to add Mexican Drug Cartels to the terrorist list after several suicide bombers attacked on American soil with the cartels’ help.  At first, they consider going after the head of the cartel.  However, Graver knows this approach will only create more cartels.  Graver decides to start a cartel war by going after the kingpin’s children.  He will kidnap Isabel with the help of Alejandro.  And during the kidnapping, they will make Isabel think they are saving her in order to gain her confidence.  But when the mission changes Isabel and Alejandro are collateral damage that must be dealt with immediately.  Will Graver hurt or help this situation?

The second act of Sicario, this movie is not a continuation of the first but still keeps the same momentum (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It has lots of action and twists to keep you entertained.  But some moments are just dull and slow.  It was bloody, violent, and with government cover-ups, however, it never fully captivated the audience.  The stand-out moment was the US/Mexican shootout near the border.   It provided more action in that one scene than most action movies have it their entirety.  If you are a fan of the first, you will enjoy this one.  To newcomers, you don’t need to see the first to watch the second.  Also, there is a great potential for a part 3. But this won’t be the cult classic the first movie became.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

You believe that change is the goal. You have been doing this too long to believe that – Cynthia

Remember what happened to the price of cocaine after 9/11. Tight borders are good for business – Gravers

So you want to be Sicario. Sit down. Let’s talk about your future – Alejandro

Uncle Drew – Review

Uncle Drew – Budget of $17 – 19 million – 1 hour and 43 minutes

Uncle Drew
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Uncle Drew was the biggest name in Rucker tournament.  However, after a clash with his team members, none of the 5 players showed up.  Now, the tournament has a $100,000 prize and creates legends.  Dax is a Ruckers coach who has lost his players, girlfriend, and home.  He needs this $100,000 to get his life back on track.  As he sits on the sidelines, literally and figuratively, trying to figure out what to do, he sees an old man teaching a young man about the game.  Dax, like most onlookers, laughs at the elderly man, until he starts to win.  Dax quickly finds Drew and ask him to be on his team.  Drew tells Dax it has to be his team and his rooster.  Dax tries to counter but Drew breaks him down.  Dax and Drew go on a road trip to find:

  1. Boots – on a psychiatric hold and in a wheelchair
  2. Big Fella – a Karate instructor
  3. Lights – blind
  4. Preacher – A preacher with a wife who WILL find him

While they all get closer, Drew and Dax are both keeping a secret.  Dax isn’t opening up about his missed hoop dreams and lack of love.  Drew isn’t opening up about his role in the team’s break up.  In order for the team to become a family, everything must come out into the light.

While this movie is better than expected, it’s what you expect.  It has some laughs, some heart, and some good basketball.  The team not only play in the Rucker Tournament, they also play against high school girls.  This movie also has a lot of messages.  First about letting go of the past.  Second, keep playing.  Three, don’t let your pride get in your way.  Even though it has all these messages, it doesn’t get preachy.  So if you are looking for a decent laugh, see this movie matinee.  If you love basketball, wait for Netflix or Vudu.  Stick during the end credits for bloopers and behind the scenes shots.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

A bag of Dax makes more sense – Mookie

You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take – Uncle Drew

You’re Gladys Knight and they’re the Pips – Dax

Rey is now face-to-face with the legendary Luke Skywalker.  She wants to be trained in the ways of the Jedi and bring him back to Leia & the Resistance.  He has no interest in training another Jedi and thinks it should end.  He wants to stay on his island and enjoy the simple life, without the force.  However, while Rey is with Luke, she realized she can connect to Kylo’s mind.  Kylo tells her she doesn’t know the truth about Luke.  She must ask him why he decided to give up the ways of the Jedi.  Only then will she see the truth about Luke Skywalker and join Kylo.  In space, Finn has just woken up to learn the Resistance is under attack.  They are down to their last ship and can’t run for two reasons.  First, they are low on fuel and can travel light speed one more time.  Second, the First Order can track them through light speed.  The Resistance wants to abandon ship and find safety.  However, Finn and Rose (a new friend that stunned him) come up with a plan to jam the tracker and give the Resistance time to escape.  But first, they have to break into the biometric scanner so the ship won’t detect them on board.  Maz tells them they need a code breaker on Canto Bight.  Finn must stop the tracking device so Rey will have a ship to come home to after her training is done.  With everyone’s plan in place, the Resistance will need to come together to escape the deadly clutches of the First Order.

Visually, this is an amazing, beautifully shot movie.  The scene of Rey and Luke on Ahch-To are stunning.  Also, the battle scene on Crait was enhanced with an effect where the salt became red if it was disturbed by movement.  It was the exclamation point the scene needed.  While this movie offered a lot of “hold your breath”, cheering, and crying moments, it still felt too long.  Also, Luke give you the feeling of being Mei Pei instead of a reluctant Jedi (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You sit waiting for the real Luke to come back.  As this happens, you find yourself getting bored.  This movie could’ve been shorter and had the same impact.  So, definitely see it in Dolby.  When a ship gets hit, your chair will shake.  Although 3D is nice, it’s not a necessity.  While this is not the best of the Star Wars franchise, it’s not the worst (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

You and your friends are doomed – Holdo

I can’t feel my tongue – Finn

I don’t think they like me – Rey

I can’t imagine why – Luke Skywalker

Roger Kint (a.k.a Verbal) sits and talks to U.S. Customs Special Agent Dave Kujan with his immunity knowingly in tack.  Kujan wants to know who set a ship ablaze, killing 27 men and injuring 1.  Kujan believes Verbal is holding back something and wants all the details since he was the sole uninjured survivor.  With a calm tone, Verbal informs Kujan that the fire didn’t start on that ship, but with a course of events in New York 6 weeks ago.  Verbal along with 4 other men were pulled into a police station and questioned about a hijacking.  While the 5 men sit in a cell, they come up with a plan to get the cops back.  Keaton, McManus, Hockney, Verbal, and Fenster will rob crooked cops and sell whatever they get in another state.  This robbery didn’t just rob the cops, they robbed Keyser Söze.  Söze is a Turkish mobster who strikes fear in the heart of everyone who hears his name.  While Verbal tells his story, Kuja has to determineSöze is real or a myth.

This movie has become a cult classic because it contains one of the biggest reveals in movie history.  This movie has a lot of moving parts so pay attention to everything you see and hear.  What makes this movie great to view is its complex characters.  These guys aren’t just bad guys robbing people.  Some struggle with the plan, some struggle with the past, and some with faith.  It’s these struggles that lead them to a life of crime.  So watch this if you have enough time to give it your full attention.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

What time is it? – Keaton

Ready? – Söze

Don’t you guys ever f’ing sleep – McManus

You sure you brought enough guys – Hockney

Besides, it was fun. I got to make like I was notorious – Verbal

A young calf named Ferdinand lives at Casa Del Torro and, unlike the other bulls, he doesn’t want to fight.  He wants to snell the flowers and care for others.  His father tells Ferdinand his wants are noble.  But they are bulls and one day he has to fight.  His father is one of the best bulls in the business and is usually picked by the Matador.  After a match, Ferdinand’s dad does not come home.  In shock, Ferdinand escapes and catches a train.  He jumps off the train, runs, stumbles, and is knocked unconscious.  He wakes up in a barn and is approached by Nina.  He smells her flower in her hair and instantly becomes her pet.  She promises to never hurt him and never make him fight.  Ferdinand lives, sleeps, and eats with young Nina.  They go to the Flower Festival each year but this year Ferdinand can’t go.  Juan, Nina’s father, tells her Ferdinand is a full grown bull, not a calf.  People in town will not understand that he is gentle and sweet.  So, Nina, Juan, and Paco the dog go to the festival.  Even though Ferdinand is given every holy sign not to go, he does anyway.  After a chance of clumsy events, Ferdinand is mistaken for an angry, baby-eating bull and is taken away, back to Casa del Toro.  When Ferdinand learns the truth about bullfighting, he knows he must escape and get back to Nina or he will face the Matador in the ring.

Based on the book Ferdinand by Munro Leaf, this is a funny light-hearted comedy about tough events (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Now, they never say the word “die” or “death” but it is implied.  So be prepared for the younger children to asks “what happened”.  Out of respect for the culture, they never display the bullfighters as good or bad, they are just a part of the plot to help move the story along.  Ferdinand isn’t trying to run from the fighter, but the fight itself.  He doesn’t want to be a fighting bull, just Nina’s pet.  One thing is painstakingly clear, the amount of time the animators spent studying Madrid’s city, farmland, and Matador traditions.  The backdrops and costumes are some of the most amazing in animation.  You will want to find out if these places are real and if you can go.  Stay past the first set of credits and 3D is not necessary.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars
