Ocean’s 8 – Budget of $70 million – 1 hour and 50 minutes

Ocean's 8
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Debbie is out on parole after 5 years, 8 months, and 12 days in prison.  She convinces the parole board that she wants to live on the straight and narrow path.  However, the moment her feet touch the ground, she is back to her old ways.  After “shopping” and “finding a hotel room”, she calls Lou.  Lou was her partner in crime and looks forward to hearing Debbie’s new plan.  Debbie wants to rob the Met Gala for a Cartier Necklace priced at $150 million.  Lou believes they will need dozens of people and millions of dollars.  Debbie assures Lou that she only needs 7 people and $20,000 for her plan.  So they recruit:

  1. Nine Ball – master hacker
  2. Tammy – a fence
  3. Constance – pickpocket
  4. Rose – fashion designer
  5. Amita – jewelry maker

With these people by their side, Debbie and Lou will attempt to give and get the Cartier necklace from Daphane (Hollywood starlet) and replace them with a fake.  Everything is going as designed until Lou finds Debbie’s true motivation for pulling off this heist.

As an extension to The Ocean’s Trilogy, this movie creates a good story with dashes of the past, lots of jewels, and some con-artist’s tricks of the trade (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  While viewing the old movies isn’t necessary, it helps fill in some of the blanks about the Ocean’s past and family ties.  And fret not, you will learn why Debbie was arrested and who put her there.  Also, they explain why they chose an all women crew.  Plus using the Met Gala as a background, it provides you a look at the exclusive star-studded party while giving the viewers lots of stars from different walks of life.  This movie has plenty of close calls, nail-biting moments, and slick moves.  You will see these women use their wits to take control of the situation at any time.  It has a few funny lines but it never gets sappy or emotional.  Movies with an all-female cast can easily fall into the “Lifetime” or “Hallmark” trap.  This does not.  This movie is all about the heist and a different type of female empowerment.  See it matinee and Dolby is not necessary.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Killer Ending

Agatha has survived an abusive husband to become a semi-famous mystery writer.  As she writes her latest novel, she drops her daughter off at college, gets an assistant, and threatens her manager.  When Agatha can’t get in touch with her daughter Sarah for a few days, her assistant Caroline takes matters into her own hands.  Caroline goes to Sarah’s dorm room to find broken glass, an upside down heart on the wall, and Sarah’s ex Jack strung up.  She calls Agatha to report her findings and Agatha is floored.  The crime scene is just like the one in her manuscript, her unpublished manuscript.  She realizes someone has hacked into her computer and following her unpublished book in real time with her daughter as the victim.  Agatha tries to use this knowledge to ensure her daughter safety by typing in lines about feeding the victim.  But when someone else starts typing, Agatha and possibly Sarah are lost.

“Just call the cops” is a phrase you will be screaming from the beginning.  Or “write he will return you daughter home alive” is something else you may say.  But give this movie a chance.  It has a lot of Red Herring and not-so-dumb cops.  However, as the mystery of her daughter starts up, the mystery of her husband death starts to turn its ugly head.  This will leave you truly questioning everything going on in the movie.  That is the true mystery.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

Deadly Matrimony – Review

Deadly Matrimony – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Deadly Matrimony

Sara is a smart, funny lawyer who is doing something that makes everyone who knows her uncomfortable.  She is marrying Leo.  While he is very charming, Sara’s loved ones can’t get past the fact she has only known him for three months.  But she is happy, so they keep their peace.  After getting married, she hears a woman crying in the bathroom during the reception.  She thinks is strange but brushes it off.  A few days later, she checks her bank account and discovers all her money is gone and Leo has bought a plane ticket.  She believes she has been hacked but some believe Leo did it.  While she dreams of Leo’s dangerous side, she tries to keep her faith in her marriage.  That is until Melinda comes knocking at her door. Melinda knows Leo as Sam: her husband.  The man that took all her money and left her with nothing.  Melinda wants Sara to join forces with her and take Leo/Sam down.  But will Sara believe her?

Be prepared to yell at the TV.  While watching the story unravel, don’t get furious with the lead character.  She is just stuck in love.  Even with every sign pointing to Leo being a crook, she keeps hoping there’s an explanation.  Sara makes all the typical Lifetime mistakes when getting married (short engagement, ignoring friends warnings, ignoring spouse’s flaws).  But she will become stronger and see Leo for who he truly is.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Royally Ever After – Review

Royally Ever After – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Daniel is ready to ask Sara to be his wife.  He knows he truly loves her and she him.  But there is one thing he didn’t tell her.  He is the crowned Prince of St. Ives, next in line for the throne.  Even though he got Burt and Marie’s, Sara’s parents, permission, he still needs to get the Queen and King to accept her and his engagement.  Once Sara learns Daniel’s true identity, her laughter leads to shock and awe.  The moment Sara lands in St. Ives, she makes a string of faux pas.  Sara believes that manners are keeping her from the Queen’s acceptance.  But when she learns how much Daniel will give up for marrying a commoner, can she go through with the wedding?

This is one of those most unintentionally funny film Hallmark has to offer.  It is funny without making fun of Sara and her family’s commoner ways.  They are just being nice and welcoming in a frosty situation.  It’s so easy to believe this is a true love story.  The lead couple is amazingly connected and feed off of each other.  This is one to watch.  So get your tea warm, your DVR ready, and 2 hours of quiet to yourself.  Enjoy.

Ashley and Mike are going on vacation to improve their marriage.  Mike had an affair he hopes taking Asley on her long-awaited trip will the best way.  He hopes she will stop remembering the past and look towards their future.  On their first day, Ashley explains her family’s history with the island.  It includes love, loss, and guilt.  But she continues to look for the joy in the trip. And that’s when she finds an ankle bracelet with a message of love and hope.  She decides to keep it and enjoy her trip.  The next day, she notices the bracelet is gone.  She believes a maintenance man stole it but Mike warns her that she has no proof.  Ashley can’t let it go because she has a bad feeling something has happened.  By the end of the movie, there will be several dead bodies, a drug ring, and an affair exposed.

Killer Island is properly named.  The number of killers and deaths on this island grow with no sign of slowing down.  While you know who committed the current murder, you are left hanging in the wind for the reason why she was killed.  And it is deeper than you would believe.  While this movie is a new take on the mystery plot, don’t be surprised if you see it on Lifetime under a different name.  Watch this movie when you need to kill time but don’t open the wine.

#HanSolo: A #StarWars Story – Movie Review

Solo: A Star Wars Story – Budget Unknown – 2 hours and 15 minutes

Solo: A Star Wars Story
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Han is considered another scrumrat on the planet Corellia.  He and his girlfriend Qi’ra want nothing more than to leave the planet and live by their own rules.  One day, Han steals something that he knows will buy his and Qi’ra’s freedom.  However, in order to gain that freedom, he has to betray Lady Proxima. Lady Proxima is the leader of Corellia and sends Han on missions to steal things for her.  When Han and Qi’ra run with her loot, she sends her henchmen to find Han and Qi’ra.  Once on the edge, they see stormtroopers and the henchmen.  Just as they are about to escape, Qi’ra is grabbed while Han makes it through.  He promises to come back for her.  He will apply to the Imperial Navy as a flight cadet, get a ship, and fly back to Corellia.  That promise will remain his top priority for 3 years.  He will beg, borrow, steal, and join a gang of thieves to get Qi’ra back.

This is the story of how Han Solo got his name, got the Millennium Falcon, and met Chewbacca.  In the beginning, he is a risk-taking, insubordinate kid that just wants to save his girlfriend.  But with each person he meets on his journey, he learns about the cruelties, the disappointments, and the survivors in this world.   This movie does what Star Wars is known for in the past.  It gives strong action sequences, nail-biting moment, and plenty of laughs.  As the story winds down, it does seem to drag a little.  Also, there is a lot of foreshadowing that takes away from the biggest reveal in the entire movie.  While this is a great IMAX movie, don’t bother with 3D.  The lights glaring in the Millennium Falcon is extremely distracting.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

After meeting in a bar’s quiz competition, team captains Annie and Max fall in love and get married.  Annie is ready to start a family but learns that Max will have a hard time conceiving.  She knows that Max is competitive and his brother Brooks’s success, good looks, and overall dominance must be messing with his mojo.  And with Brooks coming into town, Annie worries Max’s issues will only get worse.  Annie and Max host a weekly game night with their friends Kevin, Michelle, and Ryan.  Kevin and Michelle, now married, have been dating since high school.  And Ryan brings a new girl each week.  After Brooks embarrasses Max again during the game night, he offers to host one of his own.  Max and Annie decide to go just to destroy Brooks at his own game and get his mojo back.  Brooks decides to bring game night up a notch by hiring actors to kidnap him and leave clues for them to find him.  The first one to find him will win his car, a Porshe Spyder (Max’s dream car).  An FBI detective comes in and gives them dossiers with their first clues, then 2 men come in, beat up Brooks, and take him.  The 3 couples continue eating and reading their clues.  But they don’t know that the FBI agent was fake, but the kidnappers are real.  In the end, bullets will fly, blood will be everywhere, and the truth will come out.

How can you not laugh?  This movie was funny from beginning to end.  With a creepy neighbor, Denzel Washington, and a bloody dog, it has everything.  It will keep you wondering what is real and what is fake.  The writers that brought you Horrible Bosses, wins with this funny take on Game Night (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  You will laugh so hard, you will miss other jokes.  So don’t be surprised if you want to watch this movie again.  Game Night has no lulls, it gets going from beginning to end.  And what makes it funnier is the couples say what others only think.  See this one with friends and have a good laugh.

In 1974, Vivian started a book club with her 3 friends.  Now, Vivian, Diane, Carol, and Sharon meet once a month to discuss a book, drink wine, and connect.  Vivian is a smart risk manager who believes love is for suckers and men should be used for pleasure only.  Diane is a widow who’s daughters are treating like a little, old woman.  Sharon is a divorced judge who’s ex-husband and son are recently engaged but she is reserved about dating.  Carol is a married woman whose marriage has lost its spark.   Since it’s Vivian book choice this month, she chooses Fifty Shades of Grey.  The other women are uneasy about the choice but read the book anyway.  The next month they all have an awakening and want to experience the romance and passion of Anastasia and Christian Grey.  Vivian starts to let her ex-boyfriend/failed fiance into her life.  Diane tries to cut the cord with her daughters when she meets a handsome pilot.  Sharon puts herself on Bumble (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  And Carol tries to get the spark back in her marriage with some medical help.  These women will find their voice one book at a time.

While this movie mentions the Fifty Shades Trilogy, it’s not just about the women reading the book (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It’s about them discovering who they are and what the want but they don’t understand what is truly getting in their way.  The book club is the catalyst of their friendship while forcing them to take a hard look into their lives.  They come to the conclusion that age shouldn’t dictate their love or sex lives.  They can still be strong and have romance.  The only obstacle stopping them is themselves.  You will find yourselves rooting for and laughing with each woman in this movie.  See this one at the matinee price. Also, it helps to have read the books first.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Show Dogs – Review

Show Dogs – Budget Unknown – 1 hour and 30 minutes

Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Max is a tough K9 in the New York Police department. He investigates crimes on is own because he doesn’t do the master/dog thing.  During a sting operation to rescue a smuggled panda, Max’s bust is scooped by FBI Agent Frank.  Angry that Frank is getting credit for his case, Max takes a bite out of Frank.  However, when the perp tells him the smuggler will be at the Dog Show to sale the panda, Max gets an idea.  Frank and Max will work together to enter into the dog show and stay close to the case.  But Max must follow commands to stay in the competition.  If he doesn’t, they will lose access to the dog show.  As the investigation progresses, Max and Frank discover that the panda isn’t the only victim for this smuggler.

This light-hearted comedy gives a nod to Turner & Hooch and Dirty Dancing will remaining true to itself (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It follows the recipe for buddy cop movie (i.e. 2 different partners coming together to solve a crime but growing up and breaking their shell in the process).  This movie is for kids with slapstick humor but adults will laugh alike.  And while it is about animal smuggling the message isn’t shoved down the viewers’ throat.  So if you want a good family movie, see this one at the matinee price.
