Her Boyfriend’s Secret – Review

Her Boyfriend’s Secret – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

Her Boyfriend's Secret

Melissa was recommended by her friend Travis (a contractor) to decorate John’s home.  She prepared several design options and he loves her work.  And her.   After flirtation exchanges, the two start to date.  Melissa thinks her new adventure loving, horse-riding, pilot boyfriend is a dream come true.  They are quickly falling for each other.  But when Carey, John’s ex, visits, she warns Melissa that John is obsessive and attacked her.  Also, he lied about his job and his name.  Carey informs Melissa that he is smart and dangerous.  Melissa blows off Carey’s warning until Travis warns her that John can be a little weird.  She decides to investigate John’s home, car, and past.  This “great” boyfriend has more than one secret.

Seriously, how many warnings do you need!! As Melissa gets more clues to John’s dark side, she continues to stay in the relationship.  While she tells Travis it’s to investigate, she tells Carey she still believes him.  Melissa makes so many dumb decisions while attempting to be a smart investigator.  It’s hard to care about Melissa taking John down because you are too busy yelling at the screen.  You just want to shake her.  Even though this movie leaves you wanting more from its protagonist, John can’t be ignored.  His charm is infectious and his lies will leave you up at night.  He is the perfect sociopath.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

House of Darkness: New Blood – Review

House of Darkness: New Blood – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

House of Darkness: New Blood

After her husband left her a ‘Dear John’ letter and never came back, Brooke and her son Dylan are left to pick up the pieces.  With Judd’s proposal, she feels almost whole again.  She starts to fantasize about the perfect wedding when Judd’s mother Elaine’s nurse abruptly quits.  He wants to go back to his family home, find a nursing home for Elaine, and sell her house.  Alison feels this is too much for him to handle alone, so she asks Judd to bring her and Dylan.  Judd is happy to have the help.  On her first night, she hears and sees things in the night.  She explains it as a side effect of her medication.  But she decides to stay because her son loves being there.  However, the longer she stays the worse her delusions get until she can’t take it anymore.  Just as she is about to leave a picture, film negatives, and a file will expose the truth about the house.  And the truth doesn’t care about what you believe.

This movie has a very slow build to tell the back story of both Judd and Alison while creating a connection between then and Elaine.  The movie even sets up a reason for Alison’s delusions with her heavy sleeping medication.  So you start to wonder if she is having a mental breakdown.  To get in a few scares, this movie uses creepy figures, a sleeping child calling for its mother, and scary voices.  For seasoned thriller/horror pros, this movie is laughable.  The fainter at heart may jump once or twice.  But it’s the truth that will leave you with more questions than answers.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

The Bobby Brown Story – Review

The Bobby Brown Story – BET – 4 hours and 0 minutes (divided over 2 days, 2 hours each day)

The Bobby Brown Story

Part 1

In 1980, Bobby Brown rode bikes with a friend, within minutes that friend was stabbed to death in front of him.  When he comes home after being fired from New Edition, he walks past the foyer where his friend died.  He enters a state of depression and decides to get money any way he can.  When his mother Carol sees him looking for her gun, she calls Jheryl Busby to set him straight.  He gives Bobby hope by reminding him the company is obligated to give him a solo album.  With his brother Tommy as his manager, Bobby starts a solo career.   When his first album King of Stage gets mediocre responses, Busby convinces Motown to give Bobby Brown another chance with L.A. Reid and Babyface (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Motown agrees.  Bobby is happy with the second chance but he must be able to do this album his way.  That decision leads Bobby Brown to become the King of R&B.

This movie gives you 5 minutes of pre-New Edition Bobby Brown and the rest is after New Edition.  So, it’s a good idea to see The New Edition Movie first.  It showcases Bobby’s strong family ties and determination to make it as a solo artist.  However, he always did it with New Edtion in mind.  He always wanted to top them to prove he was needed.  That is the way Bobby handled everything in life. He was constantly proving himself to doubters.  While the first half will feel like a long music video with Girlfriend, Rock With’cha, and My Prerogative, it’s a testament to the career and talent of Bobby Brown.  In case you are watching for Whitney, the couple meets, gets engaged, and gets married in this part.  But their story was never a fairytale with drugs, infidelity, and two pregnancies before they even said ‘I do’.

You know if you take that thing out of here, you probably gonna have to use it – Carol

For this to work, you need to get the right producer – Ralph

So fellas, who’re your stylist – Tommy

Y’all gotta let me be me – Bobby

Your son’s got a real head for business – Brian

I don’t know which show is better – Whitney

Oh, is that all I am? I was here before you and I will be here after you – Robyn

Part 2

Deep into his addiction, Bobby Brown is consistently on the wrong side of the law.  Drug use has made him paranoid, get in car accidents, and have a stroke.  As he lies in a hospital bed, Whitney and Bobbi Kristina, his daughter, are by his side.  They decide to stop using all drugs and get their lives back on track.  The first step, go on a vacation to the Bahamas.  The second step was to go to rehab but when the family lands, Bobby is arrested for a parole violation in Florida.  He is sentenced to a stint in jail.  It’s there that he sobers up for the first time and resist the temptation of drugs.  Meanwhile, Tommy has been working on a way to rehab Bobby’s image to get him back on top.  A reality show starring him and with his family.  This show solidified what their fans feared.  The world of the Browns was falling apart, no one was at the helm, and Bobbi Kristina was there for it all.  Bobby has to put his life back on track before he loses his life.

The second half of this movie is filled with so much pain and sadness, it’s hard not to cry.  This movie pulls no punch but doesn’t cast complete blame.  While Carol Brown refused to see her son’s faults, he saw them within himself.  The same drive he put into the growth of his career, he put that same drive into the downfall of his career.  The hardest revelation in this movie is the truth all addicts bare: just as they are getting themselves together, everything around them falls apart.  As Bobby finds love, a career, and sobriety, he loses four family members in 3 years.  The movie ends on one positive note: The real reason Bobby Brown is standing today.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

I’m a start without you – Whitney

We need to rehab your image – Tommy

It feels desperate – Bobby

Do I look like Whitney to you – Alicia

His Perfect Obsession – Review

His Perfect Obsession – Lifetime – 2 hours and 3 minutes

His Perfect Obsession

Allison and her daughter Abigail enjoy their time together while talking on the phone with their Aunt Charlotte.  Then they hear a sickening sound.  Charlotte was hit by a car and died.  At Charlotte’s funeral, Allison, Abigail, and Allison’s husband Wyatt meet Bart.  Bart was Charlotte’s accountant and want to help get her affairs in order as quickly and painlessly as possible.  Wyatt on the other hands sees something else, he believes Bart was hitting on Allison and wants him to stay away.   Wyatt’s possessiveness leaves Allison shocked because Wyatt is having an affair.   She and Abigail overhear him talking to his mistress, so she ends their relationship and kicks him out.  Wyatt goes to drown his sorrows at a bar and runs into Bart.  After they exchange words, Bart leaves.  Wyatt believes he has won but he doesn’t know that Bart has been quietly stalking Allison on social media and he feels now is his chance to make his move.   He will do anything to have Allison and Abigail all to himself.  Even kill.

With the era of social media, this story rings too true.  It’s easy for a stalker to watch your page, post, or tweets for years and you never know.  Quietly creating an obsession without you knowing they exist.  And with Bart being a quiet unassuming guy, Allison would have no need to worry about her or her family’s safety.  As things start to turn for the worse, Allison must count on her greatest strength: Abigail.  Being recently blinded to medication, most movies would have her be a hindrance.  But this movie shows Abigail as ABLED not disabled.  This is the most beautiful quality of this movie.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

She cries sarcasm instead of tears – Allison

Are we all going to pretend he wasn’t hitting on you right in front of me – Wyatt

I want you to leave – Alice

I may be many things but I am not clueless – Bart

Dinner For Two – Review

Dinner For Two – TVOne – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Dinner For Two

Chris prepares a soul food meal, pours a glass of wine, and plays a mix CD.  Then he hears a knock at the door.  It’s his ex Angie.  She knows Chris needed her so she came by to help.  While he cooks Angie’s favorite meal, the two talk about how they meet at Pierson University in 1992.  Chris was awestruck by Angie’s singing voice and beautiful looks.  While they eat, they discuss their first breakup over infidelity and how they got back on track.  Angie continues to talk hoping it will help Chris stop drinking and get his life back on track.  Chris continues to talk because he hopes they will get back together and have his family again.  Angie wants him to stop looking at the past and focus on the future.  Chris doesn’t see a future anymore and wants to end it all.

This is the serious talk all couples should have before they decide to break up.  This couple doesn’t get loud, talk down to each other, or throw things.  They have a true heartfelt conversation.  Both have messed up in the past and married for a brighter future.  As they look back using objects, food, words, they see unfulfilled promises and multiple warning signs.  Each college scene is emphasized with wardrobe and technology to put you back in that time period.  While each is at fault, they have a hard time accepting those faults.  This movie should be used as an instructional video on how to correctly argue.  Sit back and watch with your significant other.  Have the conversation you have been too proud, too hurt, or too angry to have.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

It’s alright. People make mistakes – Chris

You know how we do. Whenever you need me, I’ll be there – Angie

Beaches – Review

Beaches – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Beaches

Hillary and CeCe meet while CeCe was singing on the beach for money. They ran off to talk and quickly became friends. They exchanged addresses and wrote letters for years without seeing each other face to face. CeCe continued to work on her singing career while Hillary focused on becoming a lawyer. But one day, Hillary couldn’t take it anymore. Feeling like she wasn’t living for herself, Hillary left her job and went to a club at which CC was performing. For the two, no time had past. But, as the two women grow and have careers, husbands, and a child, can their friendship endure? Well, since their friendship started at a beach, let’s hope it doesn’t end at one.

A remake of Beaches, does feel rushed. The watcher must remember the original was over 2 hours with no commercial breaks. The Lifetime version is 2 hours with commercials (or 1.5 hours). Your favorite scenes are there, but it helps to know the original before seeing this movie to fill in the gaps. Idina Menzel and Nia Long try to bring new life into the roles. But at times, they seem to reach too far. Vocally, Idina does an amazing job with original and past songs. Also, Nia shows a great connection with the mother/child relationship. This movie had great potential, but Lifetime cut it too short. They should have stretched the movie for 3 hours with commercials; so viewers get a true sense of the connection between Hillary and CeCe. You will still cry, but not as hard as the original. You will still laugh, but not as hard as the original. You will remember, but not as hard as the original. However, don’t blame the actors or the script writers for the flaws in the remake. Blame Lifetime. Lifetime must learn that you don’t cut a remake short, you give it the time needs and deserves. The actors and writers did the best they could with the constraints. So if you have seen the original, watch while doing something else (i.e. work, cook, car repairs). For everyone else, watch this with full attention and then watch the original.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Tessa is a hard working mechanic that has to take time from the garage to act as a maid for her step-mother, Divine, and her step-sisters, Athens & Olympia. The sisters are audition as the lead for pop star Reese’s play, Cinderella (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). If the lead is amazing, she will get a recording contract. Tessa follows her family around with a spray bottle, sunblock, polish, and is ready at any moment. With everything going on, Tessa still dreams of being a singer and performing. But she knows Divine will never let her get near a stage. Georgie, the make-up artist, is willing to provide Tessa a disguise and a cover story so she can get the part. Having everything in the balance, Tessa (in disguise) gets the audition, but runs away because Divine thinks she knows her. Tessa leaves behind one sneaker during her flee. Reese gives the mystery girl until midnight to come back and claim her shoe. If the girl comes back, the part is hers; but that is only half of the story.

The shoe is not the end of the story, it’s the climax. With several original songs, Sofia’s light truly shines as an actress, singer, and dancer. This movie mixes elements of Grease, Stomp, and Ms. Congeniality along with Cinderella to make a great story with a new ending (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). There is a food fight scene, a “Cinderella” ball scene, Tessa needing to be three … yes 3 … places at once scene, and a very different dog. This is a great story for the whole family. The Rachels – Review

The Rachels – LMN – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Rachels

At a party a young girl falls to her death.  Its one of the Rachels.  Rachel Richards is a brunette, media-obsessed teen.   Her life revolves around likes, followers, and being famous.  If she isn’t the center of attention, then she feels like nothing.  Rachel Nelson is a blonde, runner that qualified for nationals and wants to join the year book club.  Richards does not like losing control over Nelson and is passive aggressively trying to stop Nelson’s rise.  But when one of the Rachels die, the quiet girl named Roxie is disturbed by the other Rachel’s actions.  One of the Rachels is calls the death a suicide, not an accident (as reported by the police).  Roxie is determined to learn the truth but turning the spotlight and exposing a Rachel.  Who died and how need to be told in 3 chapters: Rachel Nelson, Rachel Richards, and Roxie.

This story is beautifully done and an extremely creepy look on our culture today.  Although this story is not 100% linear, it is not confusing.  This movie takes Mean Girls to an extremely dark, but necessary place (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  As you see a Rachel with disturbing pictures in People magazine or finding the right angle for grief, you will be disgusted but you can’t look away (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  There are times when your mouth will drop and stay open.  If we don’t pay attention, this could easily become a “Based on True Events” story.  This is definitely worth the watch and not your typical teen, mean girl, back stabbing movie.  Trust and believe, you will never see the truth coming.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

What are you wearing? – Rachel Nelson

I am a star – Rachel Richards

Would you stop doing that – Tom

A Royal Winter – Review

A Royal Winter – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

A Royal Winter

Maggie has interviewed for a top corporate law firm with the hopes of getting a secure job. But she questions if she wants to sit and help make corporations richer. She has worked with kids for years and loves the feeling she gets when she helps others. While worrying about getting the job, Sarah (Maggie’s best friend) invites Maggie to go to Calpurnia for 2 weeks and be carefree. With a nudge from her mother, Maggie goes on a trip of a lifetime. Sarah buys her a new hat, for the new Maggie, that gets blown away. It is run over by a man on a motorcycle. That man, unknown to Maggie, is Prince Adrian (also known as the “Playboy Prince” to the paparazzi). He quickly apologizes and invites Maggie to dinner, she “accepts”. During her time with the Prince, she sees the real him … caring and generous … definitely not a playboy. After learning about Maggie, Queen Beatrice invites Maggie to dinner … which can only be described as a disaster. Prince Adrian wants Maggie to attend his coronation, but she gets a “well-timed” phone call that can change everything in their relationship.

This movie is worth the picturesque views alone. This sweet story has good laughs and not an ordinary tell of giving up ones dreams. Its about getting your dreams in spite of your fears and being who you truly are on the inside. It give you the uncomfortable dinner scene with the family, that just happens to be royal, and a glimpse of scandal. It’s a fun watch but be warned that the snow may make you feel a little cold. So have something warm close by.

I give it 4 out of 5 stars

The Wrong House

After a long move from NY to LA, Rebecca and Brian want to settle into their new home and get to know their neighbors. They even consider adding another child to their family. Their home feels like a dream come true until food, they didn’t order, gets delivered. They laugh it off as a prank and decide to ignore it. But when a prank threatens their child, the realize they have a real problem. Soon Rebecca finds another women’s underwear in her bed and suspects Brian has a rejected mistress, who is causing all their problems. Rebecca kicks Brian out, but he knows he’s innocent. Brian is determined to get his family and his home back by finding who set him up and why.

Any Lifetimer may roll their eyes when they see “The Wrong …” in a title, but give this one a chance. There will be several dead bodies, several weapons, and a dead rat. This movie, inspired by real events, is a great story. The father is not clueless and the mother isn’t an automatic hero. Plus, you know who the killer is, so you can countdown to the “discovery of crazy”. This this movie a chance.

Bad Twin

After being attacked by Cassie, Jen – a therapist – is concerned about her Cassie’s mental health. Jen knows her sister needs help not jail. While Cassie is in a mental institution, Jen decides to help by taking care of her twin nieces, Olivia and Quinn. Its obvious that Olivia is the dominant, outspoken twin. While Quinn, is the passive, thoughtful twin. Once in Jen’s home, the twins feel immediate separation anxiety from each other (because of separate rooms) and their mom. But Jen doesn’t now how deep their love for their mom lies. First, they attempt to make Jen sick to punish her for tearing their family apart. But when the twins see they are left out of Jen’s will, its proof she doesn’t love them. When they show Cassie the will, she sees a clause that gives her another idea. Get the girls adopted, so they can inherit. Jen’s life is on a ticking clock. Tick Tock.

This movie is a display of how intense a sister bond can be. It can be all consuming, destructive, and nurturing. These “twin” girls are the Shining twins all grown up (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). The actress does well displaying both twins different personalities in the way she talks and their posture. Its not long before you can tell them apart. Be prepared to yell at Jen for being so naive and not heeding her love ones warning. The plot is 85% predictable but still fun to watch.

The Perfect Stalker – Lifetime – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Perfect Stalker

After a crazy outburst during dinner, Harvey decides to get his wife, Grace, help. During the session, he learns a hard truth. Grace has Histrionic Personality Disorder (or HPD). The therapist warns that she will acted out sexually and have unhealthy attachments that could be dangerous. Grace is furious that Harvey took her to a doctor and handles him with one big shock. She moves to Philadelphia where she meets a handsome stranger, Robert. She knows Robert loves her and tries to track him down; but comes to learn he is next door … with a girlfriend, Erin. She starts on a plan to take him, but overhears that Robert may be moving because of Erin’s new promotion. Grace panics and decides to keep Robert next door … by any means necessary.

This story may seem far fetched but it could happen. The Perfect Stalker is actually has 2 stalkers. You will spend this movie wondering ‘what will she do next’, ‘how crazy can she get’, and ‘when will they figure out she is nuts’. Like most Lifetime movies. This is a decent ride with a good body count. Not completely perfect but fun to watch.

Faith knows Jessica is too good to be true, but can she convince anyone else?

If you are looking for a high body count movie, this isn’t it. This is more of a suspense movie, a Snapped episode come to life. Jessica is a true Femme Fatale in every word. You may even root for her. With drop dead gorgeous looks, a great body, and a power over men, she could take over the world. It can be rough to watch Faith, because being in the friend zone sucks. You want her to become powerful and stand up for herself. Just keep watching. Tell me Team Jessica or Team Faith?
