Mission Impossible: Fallout – Review

Mission Impossible: Fallout – Budget of $178 million – 2 hours and 47 minutes

Mission Impossible: Fallout

Ethan has a choice, complete the mission or save his friend.  He chooses Luther and loses the plutonium.  Now, the Apostles are going to use the plutonium to make three nuclear weapons.  Ethan feels horrible for losing the plutonium but he knows he did it for the right reason.  Alan sees the good in Ethan and decides to give him another chance.  A broker called the White Widow wants to trade the plutonium with a man name John Lark.  They plan to get Lark, scan his face, and become him to intercept the trade.  But Erica has other plans.  She doesn’t see the need for IMF and wants one of her people to go.  Alan is furious at the news but Erica clearly states, if her guy Walker doesn’t go, then no one goes.  Now, Ethan and his team, while being watched by Walker, have to get the plutonium before it can be weaponized.  But, of course, it won’t be that easy. This is his mission and he chose to accept it.

This movie is pure adrenaline from beginning to end.  Just when you think you have an idea of what is going on, something is flipped.  This movie is a complete fit for the Mission Impossible series (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Each choreographed fight scene is done with such precision, you feel each punch and kick.  It’s astonishing to see the team stick together even as Erica is doubting Ethan’s loyalty.  As Ethan hangs off a cliff, as Luther explains Ethan’s team devotion, or as Ilsa go toe to toe with the face of evil, you will hang on every second not knowing which way is up or down.  This is the thrill ride only Mission Impossible can pull off.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

IMF is just Halloween. A bunch of grown men in masks playing trick or treat – Erica

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – Review

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – Budget of $75 million – 1 hour and 54 minutes

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Sophie has finally finished her mother’s biggest project: to redo and update the hotel.  She decides to name it Hotel Bella Donna.  And she invites everyone to the grand re-opening.  While she is happy that her mom’s best friends, Rosie and Tanya, can come.  She is disappointed that only one of her three dads can come.  Also, her relationship is in a tough place.  Sky has been offered a job at a New York hotel and he wants Sophie to come.  Sophie believes her place is in Greece and she doesn’t want to leave it or the hotel.  Just when Sophie doesn’t think things can get harder, a storm rolls through that stops boats and planes from traveling and leaves a huge mess of her new hotel.  And what keeps her strong is memories of her mother and how she came to Greece.  This is the untold story that will unfold in front of your eyes.

While it’s pretty obvious the path for Sophie’s storyline, it’s Donna’s storyline that is the most interesting.  Seeing Donna’s first encounter with Harry in France the day before she went to Greece.   And how she met Bill because she missed the ferry to Greece.   And the chance meeting she had on a rainy road with Sam to help a horse.  Even though, each time Donna met them she said she wasn’t “that kind of girl”, she left in her inhibitions behind her and made some memories.  This movie has the songs, choreography, and laughs you know from the prequel (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). But it doesn’t spark a moment with you.  If you are a fan of first, see the second matinee.  Otherwise, wait for Redbox.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Be still my beating vagina – Tanya

He has a boat – Rosie

I disappointed her – Sam

That’s a strange name – Ruby

Focus greatest motivator is the last minute – Sophie

Collin has 3 days left on his year-long parole after serving time in jail and he is doing everything possible to stay out of trouble.  He works as a mover with his best friend Miles in their hometown of Oakland, California.  He keeps is 11 pm curfew at a halfway house.  In addition to staying out of any kind of trouble.  As he is driving home one night after work, he sees a man running.  Moments later, that man is shot 4 times by an officer right in front of Collin.  Collin goes home but can’t shake a sick feeling as the news reports come out.  The next 2 days will leave test him in love, friendship, culture, and perception.

This movie proves that everyone has a blind spot.  Miles and Collin see the world around them changing.  With gentrification, Miles and Collin don’t know where they belong.  However, the biggest question is about their friendship.  Miles believe Collin’s parole is changing him into a water down version of himself.  Collin believes that Miles is so busy being a tough guy that he isn’t growing up.  And Val, Collins’s ex, believe Miles will be Collin’s downfall.  This movie gives a spectacular narrative to a white guy growing up in a predominately black neighborhood and a black male growing up trying to not be a stereotype in a black neighborhood.  With each of them growing up together, they still have a blind spot for each other’s pain and pressure.  And during one scene, you will hold your breath and silently hope everything doesn’t fall apart.  See this movie today.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Sargent Tommy Saunders is on suspension from the Boston Police Department and has to do beat cop work to get his job back.  The final beat is patrolling the Boston Marathon’s finish line. Dun Meng was trying to sell his new app to local restaurants while missing is family in China. He finally works up the nerve to ask out a cashier at a restaurant and takes her out after the bombing for normalcy. Patrick Downes and Jessica Kesky, newlyweds, decide to watch the race instead of going to watch the Red Sox play. Steve Woolfenden, a family man, takes his son, Leo, to the race for a good time.  Officer Sean Collier, works for MIT security and makes plans to go out with his dream girl to a concert. Brothers, Dzhokhar “Black Hat” and Tamerlan “White Hat” Tsarnaev, sit and watch Al-Qaeda instruction videos for bomb making while eating breakfast. All these people, Boston, and the world will be changed with 2 bombs. When the smoke clears, blood, body parts, and ball bearings will be all over the ground … leaving the FBI Agent Richard DesLauriers in charge over Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis ,his team, and the investigation. They know they have to stop Black Hat and White Hat before they set of another bomb. But another question the police have: Is there anymore bombs around the City? They will do everything to stop the bombers and save Boston.

BOSTON STRONG!!!! This movie is shot like a reality TV show. The camera focuses in and out, is not steady, and it’s shot from weird angles. This makes you believe you are watching this as it happens. Also, real clips of the bombing, race, capture, and news coverage are used to help drive the story. This movie tugs at the heart strings, will make you scream in angry, and smile with joy. You are inspired that Boston, the Police, and the FBI all came together and work as a unit to catch the Tsarnaev brothers. The FBI quickly learn that their biggest weapon was Boston’s eyes and ears. And hearing first person testimonials at the end are poignant and endearing perspective.  Although every story that day can not be told, these accounts gives a conclusion to each story. This is a great movie for adults to see at full price. Children will not be able to handle some of the images.

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

After a memorable and untraditional introduction, Ned and Barb’s daughter, Stephanie, decide to let her parents meet her boyfriend, Laird. On their way to the hotel, Stephanie informs them they that she changed the original plans. Her parents and her brother, Scotty, will be staying at Laird’s home. She wants her parents to get to know him better, but after “the introduction”, Ned feels he knows enough. After some tense and uncomfortable moments, Laird invites Ned to his “office”. Laird asks for Ned blessing to ask for Stephanie’s hand in marriage. Ned says “No” because “Stephanie isn’t ready”. Laird disagrees. So the two make a pinky promise. If Laird can win Ned over, Ned will give his blessing. And with that blessing, Laird will propose on Christmas (which is 3 days away). Now, Ned is determined to change his Stephanie’s mind about Laird. But Laird is changing the family one member of the time.

Get ready to laugh and cover your eyes in surprise/shock/disgust. Is easy to miss jokes because you are laughing and have your eyes close. Now, crude humor is used in this story, but it is done well. Every F-bomb is done in a matter that is funny not stupid. It does tell the story of a power struggle between two men who have more in common than they know. Although Ned is asking “Why Him”, in a video montage the audience sees Laird and Stephanie’s love. Cameos are used more as long running jokes that drive the story. You will want to watch it again to believe you saw what you think you saw. You will never see a toilet, a moose, or food the same after this movie. If you like 21 Jump Street mixed with Guess Who? with a dash of The Hangover, this is for you (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).

When a satellite falls from the sky, killing a top agent, Jane Marke assembles the highest ranking world leaders in one room.  She tells them the satellite falling was not an accident but a deliberate attack caused by Pandora’s Box.  This box can break through any firewall, take over missiles, and (of course) drop satellites from the sky.  Only the people in the room had the ability to run Pandora’s Box and she is determined to know who dropped the satellite.  Just when she starts to drill the leaders, a man, Xiang, jumps through the window and starts shooting.  In the melee, Pandora’s Box is stolen by the man and his crew members (Serena, Talon, & Hawk).    Jane knows she must call someone who thinks, moves, and fights like them in order to get Pandora’s Box back.  She pulls Xander out of hiding by “testing” him.  Xander decided to help, but he must have his team.  First, Adele Wolff, who hasn’t seen a target she can’t hit.  Second, the life of the party, Nicks.  Finally, Tennyson, who loves to crash cars.  For safe measure, Marke adds Becky to Xander’s team.  Becky is a technical wiz who’s mouth runs faster than her brain … especially around Xander.  Xander must work with his team to find Pandora’s Box and return it before more satellites fall from the sky.

As the third installment of xXx franchise (xXx, xXx: State of the Union), this movie performed much better than it’s predecessors (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  It had a lot of high impact fight scenes, great stunts, and amazing characters to drive the story.  It does help to see the first two movies or you won’t get the shuttle jokes or references.   There are a few moments the movie makes fun of itself and it’s obvious cliches.  This movie has a Fast & Furious feel with a bit of James Bond (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  The co-stars shine bright and add a fresh perspective on the mission, fights, and espionage.  Also, you never know which way is up, who is bad, who is good, and who is in charge.  But all will be revealed in the end.  If you can, see it in Dolby but not 3D.  On another note, there is nothing after the end crawl; but they the possibility for a 4th movie.  Although this movie is a wild ride, viewing it once is enough.  It’s not a movie to buy and watch it over and over again.  But see it once in the theaters.

I give it 3.5 out of 5 stars

Ray Kroc is selling a 5 spindle milkshake mixer that makes 5 milkshakes at once. He his having a hard time selling when he gets a big order. He is so curious about the business, that needed 8 mixers, he travels from across the country to see it. The business is McDonald’s. Owned by Richard “Dick” and Maurice “Mac” McDonald, they were able to do what no restaurant could do, serve a meal within 30 seconds. After several failed business, they decided to start a restaurant. But when they were losing money, they did what few do.   They studied their success and failures and changed. They only sold a few items, got rid of the wait staff, and got rid of silverware. Then to make sure the food would be fast, they changed their entire kitchen to focus on precision and speed. Seeing this model only made Ray think of one thing: Franchise. The brothers quickly said no; because in the past quality was sacrificed in franchising. They only wanted their store and nothing more. But Ray promised he could do better, so they drew up a contract to allow Ray to be the Head of Franchising. But this deal wasn’t the beginning of McDonald’s (i.e. Mac and Dick), it was the beginning of Ray’s vision, the McDonald’s Corporation.

Calling all Entrepreneurs, Business People, Business Students, and anyone with a great idea. See this movie. Mac and Dick had the best intentions and tried to protect themselves, but they were no match for Ray and the Tastee Freeze King. Parts of this movie will be laughable when you hear what Dick didn’t want McDonald’s to become – compared to what it is now. It will be difficult to look at McDonald’s the same again. And prepared to be shocked to find out how much a #1 cost then. Even if you don’t know the history of McDonald’s, you will be able to see Ray’s true colors within 30 minutes. There are moments when the movie drags, but hang in there and you will learn an important lesson. This movie does give a synopsis of some of their characters lives, however other important players were left out. The Founder isn’t just a movie about business, it is a movie about persistence, trust, and contracts.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Contracts, like hearts, were made to be broken – Ray Kroc

You’re really not my type – Mac McDonald

Vincent and Sean believe they have successfully stolen 25 kilos of cocaine and can coverup their crime. They can cover it up because they are police detectives. Once they arrive on the scene … again … they are intercepted by Jennifer and Doug, Internal Affairs Bureau Officers. Jennifer’s team discover the spent rounds are government issued, so they know police officers are behind the robbery. Jennifer has been looking into Vincent and Sean for a while; but don’t have the evidence she needs. Vincent leaves knowing that Jennifer will be a problem, but does not know the extent of her knowledge of their crimes. Vincent leaves the crime scene to pick up his son, Thomas, and heads to Thomas’s basketball game. On their way, Thomas is kidnapped and Vincent is stabbed. Directly after the kidnapping Vincent gets a call from Stanley. Stanley tells Vincent that he made a mistake. Stanley was just a middle man and the drugs belong to the Novaks, the biggest and most ruthless drug lords in the business. If Vincent doesn’t return the stolen drugs within 4 hours, his son will die.

“When bad decision go horribly wrong” should be the title of this movie. There are only a few moments of tension but its the same moment over and over again. You feel like your are having deja vu. Jamie Foxx doesn’t appear to be fully committed to the role because his “threatening” scenes are often comical. In this remake of the French movie Sleepless Night, it’s Michelle Monaghan and Scoot McNairy that are fun to watch (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). By being polar opposites, but completely merciless, they carry the film. There are some decent action sequences but nothing new or spectacular. Then, they try suspense by giving everyone an angle, but you can figure out the “bad guy”, “who is who”, and “the real end game” halfway through the movie. If you really want to see an action movie and have 1.5 hours to spare, see this one matinee. Otherwise, wait for Redbox.
