Mission Impossible: Fallout – Review

Mission Impossible: Fallout – Budget of $178 million – 2 hours and 47 minutes

Mission Impossible: Fallout
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Ethan has a choice, complete the mission or save his friend.  He chooses Luther and loses the plutonium.  Now, the Apostles are going to use the plutonium to make three nuclear weapons.  Ethan feels horrible for losing the plutonium but he knows he did it for the right reason.  Alan sees the good in Ethan and decides to give him another chance.  A broker called the White Widow wants to trade the plutonium with a man name John Lark.  They plan to get Lark, scan his face, and become him to intercept the trade.  But Erica has other plans.  She doesn’t see the need for IMF and wants one of her people to go.  Alan is furious at the news but Erica clearly states, if her guy Walker doesn’t go, then no one goes.  Now, Ethan and his team, while being watched by Walker, have to get the plutonium before it can be weaponized.  But, of course, it won’t be that easy. This is his mission and he chose to accept it.

This movie is pure adrenaline from beginning to end.  Just when you think you have an idea of what is going on, something is flipped.  This movie is a complete fit for the Mission Impossible series (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  Each choreographed fight scene is done with such precision, you feel each punch and kick.  It’s astonishing to see the team stick together even as Erica is doubting Ethan’s loyalty.  As Ethan hangs off a cliff, as Luther explains Ethan’s team devotion, or as Ilsa go toe to toe with the face of evil, you will hang on every second not knowing which way is up or down.  This is the thrill ride only Mission Impossible can pull off.

I give it 5 out of 5 stars

IMF is just Halloween. A bunch of grown men in masks playing trick or treat – Erica

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – Review

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – Budget of $75 million – 1 hour and 54 minutes

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
Fandango - We've Got Your Movie Tickets! (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer)

Sophie has finally finished her mother’s biggest project: to redo and update the hotel.  She decides to name it Hotel Bella Donna.  And she invites everyone to the grand re-opening.  While she is happy that her mom’s best friends, Rosie and Tanya, can come.  She is disappointed that only one of her three dads can come.  Also, her relationship is in a tough place.  Sky has been offered a job at a New York hotel and he wants Sophie to come.  Sophie believes her place is in Greece and she doesn’t want to leave it or the hotel.  Just when Sophie doesn’t think things can get harder, a storm rolls through that stops boats and planes from traveling and leaves a huge mess of her new hotel.  And what keeps her strong is memories of her mother and how she came to Greece.  This is the untold story that will unfold in front of your eyes.

While it’s pretty obvious the path for Sophie’s storyline, it’s Donna’s storyline that is the most interesting.  Seeing Donna’s first encounter with Harry in France the day before she went to Greece.   And how she met Bill because she missed the ferry to Greece.   And the chance meeting she had on a rainy road with Sam to help a horse.  Even though, each time Donna met them she said she wasn’t “that kind of girl”, she left in her inhibitions behind her and made some memories.  This movie has the songs, choreography, and laughs you know from the prequel (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). But it doesn’t spark a moment with you.  If you are a fan of first, see the second matinee.  Otherwise, wait for Redbox.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars

Be still my beating vagina – Tanya

He has a boat – Rosie

I disappointed her – Sam

That’s a strange name – Ruby

Collin has 3 days left on his year-long parole after serving time in jail and he is doing everything possible to stay out of trouble.  He works as a mover with his best friend Miles in their hometown of Oakland, California.  He keeps is 11 pm curfew at a halfway house.  In addition to staying out of any kind of trouble.  As he is driving home one night after work, he sees a man running.  Moments later, that man is shot 4 times by an officer right in front of Collin.  Collin goes home but can’t shake a sick feeling as the news reports come out.  The next 2 days will leave test him in love, friendship, culture, and perception.

This movie proves that everyone has a blind spot.  Miles and Collin see the world around them changing.  With gentrification, Miles and Collin don’t know where they belong.  However, the biggest question is about their friendship.  Miles believe Collin’s parole is changing him into a water down version of himself.  Collin believes that Miles is so busy being a tough guy that he isn’t growing up.  And Val, Collins’s ex, believe Miles will be Collin’s downfall.  This movie gives a spectacular narrative to a white guy growing up in a predominately black neighborhood and a black male growing up trying to not be a stereotype in a black neighborhood.  With each of them growing up together, they still have a blind spot for each other’s pain and pressure.  And during one scene, you will hold your breath and silently hope everything doesn’t fall apart.  See this movie today.

Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer – Review

Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer – Lifetime – 2 hours and 2 minutes

Oscar Pistorius: Blade Runner Killer

On February 13, 2013, Oscar Pistorius screamed at an intruder and fired multiple shots into a bathroom. He discerns the person in the bathroom may not be an intruder but his girlfriend Reeva. Then he breaks down the door to save her but it was too late. Reeva died. As the police take his story, they don’t believe him because his hands are clean.  They look into Reeva and Oscar relationship through text message, witness accounts, and police reports.  When they piece together all the evidence, the police believe Oscar shot Reeva on purpose.  Now it’s left up to the court to determine his innocence.

Oscar rose to fame as the first double amputee to race with able-bodied racers.  He was a hero in South Africa and admired by all.  But admiration doesn’t equal love or trust.  Reeve was a lawyer and beautiful.  She wanted to help her mother and gain recognition in her own right as a model and actress.  She was on her way to being a household name when she was killed.  While this creates a great set up for a Lifetime movie, this movie was average at best.  It was slow, had bad effects, and just didn’t grab your attention the way you wanted it to.  With biopic movies the watchers know the ending, so everything leading up to the crime must be extremely compelling.  This movie just seems to miss the mark.

I give it 2 out of 5 stars

I’m not always a gentleman – Oscar

I hear you may be hard of hearing – Reeva

Christmas in the Air – Review

Christmas in the Air – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

Christmas in the Air

Personal organizer Lydia has her life on her phone and everything neatly stored away.  She helps her clients to the same.  So when she hears Robert, a toy inventor, talk about his “busy life” and commandeering her new whiteboard, she hands him her card.  He only accepts after he misses a dress rehearsal for his daughter Amelia’s play.  When they meet he tells Lydia he has to prepare for the following events: his daughter’s play, his son’s Christmas cookies, and create a dinner for a potential buyer.  All this while, creating a new toy for the holidays and being a full-time single dad.  So, Lydia applies her 3 C’s: Contain, Concentrate, Control.  She starts to organize his life, while he teaches her that a little disorganization can spark great creativity.

This movie is a how-to organize.  You will get a lot of tips for organizing your own life.  So get your pens and notepads ready.  Like with most Hallmark movies, you know the two will end up together, so the plotline must grab your attention.  When toys are introduced, you will be captivated and hope they are real.  When organization tips are given, you will take note.  But the love story itself feels like a subplot more than the main focus.  While this is a good movie, it’s not the best this season.  Put this on your DVR and watch later.

I give it 3 out of 5 stars

Why would I worry – George

You got to get some new material dad – Amelia

The Perfect Christmas Present – Review

The Perfect Christmas Present – HMM – 2 hours and 0 minutes

The Perfect Christmas Present

Tom “Mr. Christmas” Jacob makes peoples dreams come true by finding the perfect gift.  Christmas is his biggest time of the year.  He prides himself on his ability to stay anonymous.  So when his frat brother Paul ask to get his girlfriend Jenny a gift in 3 weeks, Tom hesitates.  But with a little prodding, Tom agrees.  After his typical Personality Profile Worksheet, Tom has a big problem: Paul knows little about Jenny.  Paul suggests that Tom meet Jenny face-to-face so he can get more information.  Again, he reluctantly agrees.  Tom tells Jenny he is a consultant, Jenny gets an idea to have Tom consults with her for her charity’s party in two weeks.  Paul tells him to agree.  So Tom has to find Jenny’s perfect gift and plan a party in two weeks.  As Tom and Jenny spend every day together they get closer, and soon there will be a ring in between them.  Just not in the way you imagine.

Now, this is a good Christmas movie that pulls at the heartstrings.  You love the chemistry between Tom and Jenny.  Also, when you hear Jenny’s connection to her father, you know the perfect gift for her.  And you hope Tom can find it.  On the other side, don’t count out Paul or Victoria.  Paul is not horrible, just a workaholic.  Victoria may throw shade but you might just want a friend like her in your corner.  And let’s not forget Meg.  The best advice giver in a Hallmark movie.   This movie will make you say “awe” and get misty-eyed.  It is the happy ending you always wanted.  Check this one out today

Christmas Festival of Ice – Review

Christmas Festival of Ice – Hallmark – 2 hours and 0 minutes

http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/christmas-festival-of-ice

Emma is working at her mother’s law firm while waiting for her bar exam results. She loves the Christmas season, especially her town’s ice sculpture competition. When she was a little girl, she and her father would enter the contest. These are some of her best memories. But for the last 3 year, Emma could not participate because she was in law school. Now that she is back, she is shocked to learn that the competition was canceled. She speaks to Councilman Harvey and learns it will take $20,000 to have the competition. Harvey can only squeeze $5,000 for the competition, and Emma will have to raise the rest. So, Emma goes to everyone one in town. Including her best friend Sarah, Nick, and his friend Lonny. Nick, taking over his parent’s Christmas tree business, has caught Emma’s eye. Although she likes Nick, Emma is focused on her test scores, her mother’s law firm, raising money, and finding competitors. Yes, she has to find competitors too. So when Emma sees Nick’s brother ice sculptures, she wants to meet him. But Nick says he his antisocial and they don’t get along. So, Emma is determined to find him. With everything going on, Emma has left one person out, her mother. She doesn’t want to tell her mother that she is competing, raising money, or having second thoughts about being a lawyer. This Christmas may change Emma’s relationships forever.

While this seems like another Hallmark loves story, the love story is only the subplot.  It’s Emma’s self-discovery and relationship with her family that plays out.  While she opens up to her father, disappointing her mother is her biggest fear.  Every time her mother mentions “law”, “deposition”, or “bar exam”, you see Emma’s face change.  She knows this isn’t for her.  But as everyone reveals themselves, she opens up to the people she loves.  Have a blanket and cocoa ready to watch this movie.  The actors will make you feel the cold.

Michael Jackson’s Halloween – Review

Michael Jackson’s Halloween – CBS – 1 hour and 2 minutes

Michael Jackson's Halloween

Vincent works as a stock boy in his family grocery store.  He dreams of being a DJ but puts his dreams aside for his dad’s vision of carrying the family’s legacy.  Victoria has given up dancing to be another faceless, nameless person at Megacorp. Both are on errands for their job when they bump into each other.  They roll down a hill and causing Igor (Victor’s boss’s dog) to run away with Vincent’s helmet.  They are lead to the “This Place Hotel” which happens to be the place where Vincent had to make is delivery.  They go inside to deliver the food and find the dog and get help from Bubbles, the talking monkey.  He directs them to get on the elevator and follow the music to discover the truth.  This path will lead them to a living pumpkin patch with zombies, dancing, spiders, scientist, and Conformity.

This movie is a mixture of the Wizard of Oz and Footloose (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer). Some symbols of Michael Jackson are obvious like his silhouette, Dangerous album cover, and songs.  But what you may miss is the 3 characters Vincent and Victoria meet are parts of Michael Jackson’s career.  Hayman is MJ’s The Wiz scarecrow.  Meriwether is MJ during the military, one-glove phase.  And Franklin Stein is MJ’s creative side in a Bad outfit.  They all represent his talent for singing, dancing, and creating.  The overall message in this Halloween film is to never give up on your dreams and never conform.  While you are watching the film, you can’t help but dance and sing along to the songs you know so well and some you don’t.  This reviewer was able to identify 17 songs.  Most of them are on the MJ Scream album (FTC Affiliate Disclaimer).  How many can you name?  This is a fun movie for all ages with a good message.

Thor has been working to stop the prophecy of the Asgard’s demise called Ragnarok.  However, when he gets home, he learns that the 9 realms are falling apart.  Thor knows his father would never let that happen, so he confronts him and exposes that it is Loki.  Thor demands to be taken to their father.  Oden lets his sons know that Hela is on her way.  She is the Goddess of Death, bent on revenge, and their sister.  As the oldest, Hela feels she is the rightful heir to the throne.  She despises Oden for changing his way and locking her away.  While absorbing the news of a new found sister, Thor and Loki stand before her.  During the fight, Loki calls for Heimdall.  But all three are swept up in the Bitfröst Bridge while still fighting.  Hela throws Loki and Thor out; she heads to Asgard to rule while the brothers land on the planet Sakaar.  Hela sets her sights on taking over all the realms and by destroying everything in her path.  Her only obstacle: someone stole the Bitfröst Sword.  She must find it to continue her domination.

Thor, without his hammer, is confronted by Sakaar locals.  But soon Scrapper 142 finds him and marks him as a contender.  Thor is set to be in the Grand Master’s game and face the Grand Master’s Champion.  Thor worries that without his hammer, he will fail.  But he will learn the truth about Scrapper 142, the Grand Master’s Champion, Loki’s whereabouts, Hela’s power, Ragnarok, and what it truly means to be the God of Thunder.

Be prepared to laugh and be in awe.  When there isn’t a physical battle, you are given a verbal battle.  Sakaar is given its own color palette which completely separates it from Asgard.  New characters are introduced with clear and concise backstories which allows them to shine with their own personalities.  Since this movie is one of the funniest in the Marvel series, the humor causes the special effects to be more cartoonish than realistic.  So, the Hulk looks like a cartoon next to a real object.  At times it just doesn’t blend.  Don’t worry, you will get the joy of cameos from Stan Lee and Dr. Strange.  As well as post end credit scenes.  So see this movie at full price and IMAX, before someone tells to much.  3D is not necessary

I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars

Amy sits in a destroyed house, in tears.  She has ruined Christmas for her children.  She sits and wonders where it all went wrong.  She thinks back to a few days prior when she got a text that froze her in place.  Her parents Ruth and Hank were coming for Christmas.  Ruth is extremely critical of Amy as a mom.  So when Amy tells Ruth she wants a laid back Christmas, Ruth takes over, decorates, coordinates, and congregates.  To get away from it all, Amy goes to see her friends Carla and KiKi.   Kiki’s mother Sandy came to town early.  She has no boundaries when it comes to Kiki.  Sandy says KiKi is her best friend and wants to spend every moment with her.  KiKi is horrified.  Carla’s mother Isis blew into town on a truck.  Isis is a hands-off mother with a gambling problem.  Carla is glad to see Isis but she knows Isis will ask for money and leave town.  Carla, KiKi, and Amy are stressed out with decorating, shopping, and wrapping to create the perfect Christmas.  But with their mother’s in town, they decide to take Christmas back and have fun.

A sequel to Bad Moms may have not been expected but fun for the holiday season.  While the holidays are fun, they are extremely stressful.  It’s fun to watch these ladies take over and be bad.  While each cast member holds their own, Christine Baranski takes over whenever she is on the screen.  Her ability to be the very definition of poised while ripping her daughter to shreds is amazing.  You will either laugh or have your jaw on the floor each time she speaks.  With a stripper, a smooth jazz legend, and tough game of dodgeball, this is a fun movie for adults.  Also no need to stay past the 1st end credits.  See this at the matinee price as an escape from the typical holiday movie.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 stars
