Please Note: This review will not discuss the controversy about the film’s casting.  It will only review the film.

The Fantastic Four starts in 2007 with a young, intelligent, and misunderstood Reed Richards having his idea for an Bio-matter shuttle being shot down by his teacher.  A young and abused Ben Grimm notices his potential and they become fast friends.  Seven years later, during a science fair, Reed is discovered by Franklin Storm, father of Sue and Johnny.  Knowing Reed’s science experiment is the answer to his problem, Franklin ask Reed to help him complete the Quantum Gate, a vehicle for Inter-dimensional Travel.  Also, Franklin finds his wayward student, Victor VonDoom, and persuades him to work with Reed and Sue to complete the Quantum Gate.  When the Gate is proven to work, the Government wants to take over and send trained operatives on the Quantum Gate mission.  Reed, Johnny, and Victor decide they deserve to make the first trip since they designed it.  Reed calls Ben and ask him to join; believing none of this would be possible without his best friend Ben.  They make the trip in the Quantum Gate, but the trip back home is another story. A story you may already know.

Fantastic Four could have been called Fantastic Four: Origins.  However, this is not the case because they don’t delve into the back stories of Johnny, Sue, Ben, or even Victor.  They make the soul focus Reed.  Fantastic 4 should be about the development and growth of all 4 members of the team and Doom.  A young Johnny, young Sue, and young Ben would have made the watcher feel more connected and invested to their struggle.  Since you don’t understand their pain, they come off as bratty, arrogant, and tightly wound. Even the “coming into their powers” was skipped using “One Year Later”.   They go from out-of-control to human weapons with specially made suits.  The CGI and acting are what make this film likable.  Compared to the previous Fantastic Four movies, the special effects are less cartoon-ish.  Even, Michael B. Jordon’s noticeable profile is seen within the flames.  Moviegoers were so impressed, they started to lean in to see more.  The way to make this movie better is to A) make the film longer for more background stories or B) make an superhero film and not an origin film.  Remember this film is based on the newer comic series Ultimate Fantastic Four.  Ultimate Fantastic Four wasn’t the family -oriented, love story comic that your parents loved; it was the darker version of the series that focuses on the family you find, not the family you create.

I give this move 2.5 out of 5 stars

Don’t blow up.  Please, don’t blow up – Reed Richards
